TRIGGER: graphic images and fighting
None of the bones had purple flowers in or under them and I hated touching them. It was creepy. It didn’t take long before I saw I was alone and that I could no longer see Saple.
My worry choked me. I walked in a circle, trying to find my cub mate or the monster prince but I didn’t see them anywhere. Finally, I collapsed into a sitting position.
I kicked the scattered skull that was closest to my foot and gasped as a bright color caught my attention. I crawled over to it. The purple flower that we were looking for grew out of a hole in the ground.

Then, there was nothing. I floated in a black sea that rocked me soothingly, as I let it carry me away. When I woke up, I was confused for a few minutes about where I was and what was happening. Everything looked weird. All the colors around me were so much brighter and the darkness had much more depth.I didn’t understand. But there was an important mission that we came here for that needed my attention right now. I looked over where the snake had come out.The blue flower was laying on it’s side on the ground but I cannot remember how it got separated from its stem. I picked it up gently. Calling out to my cub mate, I offered it excited to see the joy I brought to her face.But then she reacted in the strangest of ways! I caught her as she fell and helped her gently to the ground. I didn’t know why she fell asleep. It had been a long day but that explanation did not feel right to me.

Gale was at her side, looking worried, in a matter of seconds.The prince I laid on the bear rug. It was the worst type of item in this cabin but it looked like the softest place. Gale hurried over to check on him.“I think your lady friend is going to be alright, Dragon Rider. She just had an awful fright.” I didn’t bother asking her how she knew but I trusted her medicine.She kneeled next to the prince. We flew to the castle. But the closer we got, the darker it was. Trees were quickly losing leaves but it was the wrong season for that. The air was cold.“The keeper is drawing life out of everything within its reach. It has an unending hunger. The devastation will reach the next village by night fall if we don’t stop it now.” Saple rumbled.I didn’t need a reminder of how scary this was and knowledge like that didn’t seem helpful. A strange mewling noise caught her attention. She swallowed back her tears as she turned towards the noise. The dragon was lamenting the loss of Roger. He roared, as he let go of a stream of fire into the air, and magic crackled like lightning around them. Veronica walked into the forest and hit a tree with a bare fist. She wanted to cry. Despite being alone without anyone to impress, her tears would not come. Maybe she had already cried them all. She was so confused about her relationship with Prince Vaugn, while she appreciated the simplicity of her relationship with Roger. She had learned to love Roger completely. But there wasn’t the same attraction to him as there was with the prince and there were other emotions that she didn’t quite understand. It seemed like those emotions were what fueled the confusion.
