Darion's POV

The folder sat between us like a loaded weapon.

I had stopped reading ten minutes ago. Could not make my eyes move past the same page. The proof was right there. Every piece of evidence Ronan had spent two years building, laid out clean and clear.

But my mind kept snagging on one name.

Julian.

"Walk me through the connection again," I said. "Between Silas and Julian. I need to understand how deep this goes."

Ronan did not sigh. Did not look tired of repeating himself. He just nodde

Lena's POVFour months after the gateway fell, the northern district still smelled like ash in the mornings. You got used to it the way you got used to most things that did not go away. Not by the smell leaving but by your brain deciding it was background information and filing it there. I noticed it most on the days I walked the district with Marcus doing the weekly assessment rounds, moving slowly enough that the background had time to come forward."The western block foundations are not salvageable," Marcus said, looking at his phone as we walked. "The contractor confirmed it yesterday.""So we demolish and rebuild from scratch," I said."That is the recommendation.""Then that is what we do." I looked at the rubble where three residential buildings had stood six months ago. "How long.""Eight months minimum for the western block," he said. "Possibly ten.""Tell them ten," I said. "I would rather under-promise."He made a note. We kept walking. The mixed crews had been one of the s

  • The Alpha’s Sanctuary: His Forbidden Mate   Chapter 102 : Victory's Price

Lena's POVNobody celebrated and I want to be honest about why.It was not grief, though grief was present. It was not exhaustion, though exhaustion was absolute. It was something more specific than either of those things. It was the particular flatness that came from having spent so long in survival mode that the removal of the immediate threat did not produce relief so much as it produced the absence of threat, which turned out to feel very different from relief.People sat down. That was mostly what happened. The people who had been standing sat down and the people who were already down stayed there and everyone breathed in the specific way of people whose bodies had been running on emergency reserves for longer than emergency reserves were designed to sustain.Marcus organized the Fae soldiers within two hours. Of course he did. Ninety stranded soldiers without a commander or a gateway to return through, contained in the east section with water distributed and a watch rotation in

  • The Alpha’s Sanctuary: His Forbidden Mate   Chapter 101 : Separation

Lena's POVThe merge did not want to end and I want to be honest about that because it matters to the story. From the inside it did not feel like something we needed to escape from. It felt like the most complete and natural thing I had ever experienced, two people who had spent months learning each other through a bond finally understanding each other without any of the gaps that separate selves put between people. The limitation of being one person looking out of one set of eyes, of feelings having to travel through language before they could be shared, of never quite being certain that what arrived was what was sent. All of that was gone inside the merge.Ending it felt like choosing to break something that was not broken. That is the honest version."We have to," I said out loud. The strangeness of speaking rather than simply knowing was immediate. Hearing my own voice as a separate thing, coming from one place rather than everywhere."I know," Darion said beside me.Hearing him a

  • The Alpha’s Sanctuary: His Forbidden Mate   Chapter 100 : The Gateway Falls

Lena and Darion's POVThe gateway knew something was wrong before Kieran did.We felt it shudder the moment the last piece of the Fae essence came back to us, that deep structural trembling of something that had lost the thing holding it in shape. Not dramatic. Just a table losing one leg, the whole structure tilting, searching for a balance it was not going to find.We did not give it time to look. The power flooded back into us all at once, not gently, the way water finds a gap and rushes through it without asking permission. The missing piece returned home after weeks of being somewhere it did not belong. For one full second we were completely whole, both sources running in full integration, nothing missing, nothing borrowed, nothing held back. Then the gateway started folding."It's working," we said, though there was no one to say it to. We were one thing looking out through two sets of eyes and saying it aloud was just the way of marking a moment that deserved to be marked. The

  • The Alpha’s Sanctuary: His Forbidden Mate   Chapter 99 : One

Lena and Darion POVsThe world was different from inside the merge. Not visually. Not in any way that would have been visible to the people watching from the edges of the cleared space. But from inside it everything had a quality of simultaneity that did not exist when you were one person looking out of one set of eyes. We saw the gateway and Kieran and the battle behind us and the threshold architecture and the resistance fighters and the pale wrong light of the Fae realm bleeding through the open gate all at once, not sequentially, not by shifting attention from one thing to another, but all of it present in awareness at the same time without any of it crowding the rest. This was what it meant to be one thing with two sources.Kieran came at us fast.Faster than he had moved against Lena alone, faster than he had moved against Darion in the hollow, the speed of someone who had assessed the new situation and concluded that fast was better than measured. His power arrived before he di

  • The Alpha’s Sanctuary: His Forbidden Mate   Chapter 98 : Soul Merge

Darion's POVWe had talked about it twice.Once when Lena first proposed the idea in the planning room, the dual signature theory, the possibility that the bond between us ran deep enough to present to the seal as a single hybrid source. Once after Cassia's courtyard conversation, when Lena had come to find me and told me about the unknown cost and I had held that information and told her that unknown was not the same as impossible. We had not talked about the full version. The thing underneath the theory, the thing that made the theory work at the level it needed to work to actually match what Kieran was carrying. Because the theory as Lena had outlined it to the planning room was the accessible version, the one that sounded possible rather than terrifying. What Sable had told me privately three days ago was the terrifying version. The bond between a mated pair operated as a shared channel. A pathway between two separate consciousnesses that allowed feeling and intent and presence to
