Chapter 3

Author: Sezy
Before Arissa could process what was happening, a female voice sounded behind her. "Arissa's compound is so shabby."

Arissa turned around and saw Nicola standing in the sunlight. She held her still‑flat stomach and wore an exquisite, luxurious dress.

"Oh dear, look at my forgetfulness." Nicola covered her lips and pretended to be surprised. "I completely forgot. His Highness sent me all the good things from the Crown Prince's residence. Arissa has nothing to decorate, so it naturally looks a bit shabby."

Arissa's fingertips trembled slightly as she suppressed the throbbing pain in her heart. She looked up at Nicola. "Why are you here?"

Nicola stroked her still‑flat stomach and smiled gently. "Recently, I have had severe morning sickness and keep craving something sour. I heard that your peach tarts are appetizing, so I came to ask for a piece."

Arissa's fingertips trembled even more. Before she could speak, Helen stepped in front of her with fury in her eyes. "Miss Mullery, my lady is the future Crown Princess. You are a concubine. How dare you ask the Crown Princess to cook for you? You are disregarding the rules."

Slap.

A slap landed across Helen's face before she could react.

Nicola withdrew her hand. A cold glint flashed in her eyes. "Who gave a lowly maid like you the right to interrupt when your master is speaking? Someone, give her 100 slaps."

Arissa's gaze turned icy. She stepped in front of Helen. "I dare you."

Nicola's red lips curled slightly. "Let us see if I dare."

She muttered, "Nightowl."

A dark figure appeared, and Arissa's pupils contracted sharply.

Nightowl was Louis' most skilled personal bodyguard for over a decade. He protected Louis without ever leaving his side. Louis actually gave him to Nicola?

Nightowl expressionlessly restrained Arissa's arms. Two older maids stepped forward to hold Helen down and slapped her nonstop.

Blood seeped from the corner of Helen's mouth, yet she still glared stubbornly at Nicola.

Arissa's voice trembled. "Stop. I will make them for you. Just let Helen go."

Nicola waved her hand in satisfaction, signaling them to stop. Helen's face was covered in blood as she rushed to Arissa's feet. "Miss, you must not. You are of noble birth. How could you..."

Arissa leaned down to wipe away the blood and whispered, "It is alright."

In the small kitchen, Arissa kneaded dough, prepared fillings, and baked the peach tarts despite her still‑healing chest wound.

When the first batch of peach tarts came out of the oven, Nicola sat in the pavilion and admired the snow.

"Too sweet." She took one bite and threw it on the ground.

The second batch made Nicola frown. "It is so sour it makes my teeth ache."

The third batch made her overturn the plate. "Are you deliberately trying to make my morning sickness worse?"

Arissa's hands were red from the heat, yet she calmly asked, "What flavor do you want?"

"Why endure this, Arissa?" Nicola leaned closer and whispered in her ear. "I wanted to see how much Lady Jerryton, who did not even flinch when she shielded Louis from a sword, could endure."

Arissa's nails dug into her palms. "Since you do not want to eat anymore, I will leave."

She turned to leave, and a loud plop sounded behind her.

Arissa turned sharply.

Nicola had jumped into the icy lake.

"Help. Your Highness, save me..." Nicola thrashed in the water and cried out in anguish.

Almost at the same moment, a figure in black rushed over and leaped into the icy lake.

Louis carried Nicola ashore. She was soaking wet and shivering. She nestled in his arms and sobbed uncontrollably. "Your Highness, do not blame Arissa. She... she did not mean it..."

Louis looked up. His gaze pierced Arissa like a dagger. "Do you not know she is pregnant?"

Arissa froze. Her fingertips felt icy.

"Arissa, I told you. I kept her at the Crown Prince's residence only for revenge. Why bother arguing with her?"

His voice was low, yet every word was scathing.

Arissa suddenly laughed. Tears streamed down her face as she whispered, "Revenge? You are getting revenge to the point of... even having a child?"

"Cold... Louis, I am so cold..." Nicola snuggled weakly into his arms. His eyes filled with heartache.

Louis looked up again and glared at Arissa. "With such a temper, how can you be the Crown Princess? The rules of the Crown Prince's residence cannot be broken. Whoever causes trouble will be punished."

He shoved Arissa into the icy lake.

Plop.

The icy water submerged her head. The biting cold felt like a thousand needles piercing her bones.

Arissa struggled to the surface. Louis' cold order echoed across the lake. "Stay in the water for a full hour before you come up."

In the dead of winter, the frozen lake was piercingly icy. Arissa's limbs went numb, yet images of her exile flashed through her mind.

Snowflakes fell heavily as she carried the feverish, unconscious Louis across a frozen river. The ice cracked, and she fell into the icy pool, yet she held onto him tightly until they were rescued.

He had held her hand and sobbed, "Arissa, I will never betray you."

It turned out that his promise meant pushing her into the icy lake for another woman.

When the tenth spring snow fell upon the Northanian prairie, Arissa gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, in the gilded royal tent.Lucian held her sweaty hand as he listened to the newborns’ cries. His eyes turned even redder than when he was wounded on the battlefield. He cut the umbilical cord and carried a baby wrapped in mink fur to her. "Look at our daughter. She looked so much like you."Arissa’s eyes were gentle. "Look at you. Anyone could tell you favored our daughter.""Because our daughter looked just like you."Arissa laughed and winced softly when her movement tugged at her wound.Lucian bent over anxiously. "Were you hurt? Summon the imperial physician.""Lucian, I am fine." She held his hand, her fingertips brushing the calluses on his palm. "What about Southbern? Were there any news recently?"Lucian’s face darkened. The scout reported the day before that the new king of Southbern ignored state affairs, provincial lords wielded their own armies, refugees roamed

Lucian chuckled softly, and his Adam’s apple brushed against her collarbone. "Of course. This was a sacred spring. It was said to be the most effective for relieving back pain."His hand slid down to her lower back and massaged it gently. "I kept seeing you turning over in bed at night lately. Were you feeling weary?"In the hazy mist, Arissa’s earlobes turned crimson. She buried her face in his shoulder and murmured, "It was all because someone insisted on hugging me while sleeping.""If I did not hug you, how could I tell if you kicked the covers off?" Lucian turned her face toward him, and his thumb brushed her lips. "Last time you caught a cold and coughed, it scared me to death."His kiss fell with the warmth of the spring water. As they kissed, Arissa heard the pounding rhythm of his heart.Suddenly, the clatter of hooves echoed in the distance. The guard’s voice cut through the mist. "Your Majesty, we have an urgent matter to report."Lucian frowned, yet Arissa held his r

"Then let someone else take the throne." His voice was soft, yet every word struck like an icicle.Memories flooded into his mind.During his exile, Arissa carried him across the frozen river. The rough sole of her shoes scraped against the ice and made a creaking sound. Her thin back bent into an arch, yet he still heard her laughter‑filled breathing. "All that matters is that Your Highness is alright."The king staggered and grasped the armrest of the throne. His throat churned with bile before he spat a mouthful of blood onto the emerald floor tiles. "Rebel... You rebellious son..."Before he finished speaking, the king collapsed onto the throne. The attendants rushed in from outside. Louis watched as the imperial physicians lifted the royal sedan chair in panic. He stood slowly, his black pant legs brushing over the scattered mess.In the Northanian royal court a thousand miles away, gilded curtains fluttered gently in the morning breeze.Arissa reclined on a bearskin cushio

While Lucian recovered, Louis visited Arissa several times, yet he was always turned away.It was not until a month later that Arissa agreed to meet him.Louis looked much more haggard, and dark circles marked his eyes. When he saw Arissa holding hands with the recovered Lucian, despair flickered in his gaze. He said hoarsely, "I did not send the assassins. It was the Mullery family; they hated you... It was also my fault..."Arissa answered calmly. "I know. Lucian uncovered the truth; Nicola is dead, so it was natural for them to feel resentment."Louis stepped forward. "Arissa, come home with me. Southbern needs you. I need you even more."Lucian frowned and prepared to speak, yet Arissa gently squeezed his hand. "Let me handle it."She walked up to Louis with a calm expression. "Crown Prince Louis, what we had ended long ago. From the moment you collected my heartblood for Nicola, there could never be anything between us again."Louis staggered back in shock. "I regret it. Arissa took out silver needles and administered another needle treatment to detoxify Lucian. She had developed this method by combining the medical skills of Southbern with the witchcraft of Northania. It was risky, yet it was the only hope.As the silver needle pierced the point, Lucian's body trembled violently and his veins bulged. Arissa clenched her lower lip and continued the treatment until he gradually calmed down. The witch doctor sighed. "The poison is too deep inside His Majesty's body. Even if he wakes up, I fear..."Arissa shouted, "Silence. He will get better."During the quiet night, Arissa napped wearily against the edge of the bed. Suddenly, she felt her fingers being gently hooked."Lucian?" She looked up and met a pair of familiar amber eyes.Lucian smiled weakly. "Why are you crying... I'm not dead yet..."Arissa realized she was crying heavily. She leaned into his arms, yet she avoided pressing on his wound and held him carefully. "You idiot. Why did you kee

The next morning, the trade negotiations were held on the prairie outside the royal court. Arissa wore the regal attire of Northania’s queen, and her golden headpiece gleamed in the sunlight. She held Lucian's arm and walked toward the negotiation tent.Louis waited there already. His black silk outfit made him look slimmer. When he saw how close Arissa and Lucian were, agony flickered in his eyes, yet he regained composure quickly."Your Majesty." He nodded slightly, though his gaze stayed on Arissa. "Arissa... Your Majesty."Arissa remained calm. "Crown Prince Louis, you came all this way. You have been through a lot."The negotiation proceeded smoothly. Louis agreed to almost all of Lucian's conditions. At noon, everyone moved to the banquet area on the prairie for lunch."May I speak to you in private, Your Majesty?" Louis asked Arissa. His eyes showed a pleading look. "Consider it a farewell."Lucian frowned and prepared to decline, yet Arissa placed her hand gently on his.
