LOGINChapter 2
The bells stopped. The silence that followed was worse than the sound. Lyra stood in the middle of the ruined room, staring at the silver light fading from her fingertips. Around her, pieces of broken glass glittered across the floor. Her father was gone. The creatures were gone. And the four strangers remained. Four men who had arrived in the middle of the night claiming that she was something she had never heard of. A Heart Queen. Lyra shook her head. “No.” Caelan watched her carefully. “No?” “I don't know who you're talking about.” “You do.” “I don't.” Her voice cracked. Caelan lowered his sword. “You will remember.” “Remember what?” “That you have died before.” Lyra's blood turned cold. Lucien's expression changed. For the first time since entering the house, the charming prince looked genuinely uncomfortable. “Caelan.” “What?” “Perhaps now isn't the time.” Caelan glanced at him. “Then when?” “When she's had time to breathe.” Riven laughed bitterly. “Time?” He looked toward the broken window. “Half the kingdom probably felt that magic. We don't have time.” The fourth man remained silent. Darian stood near the doorway, almost completely hidden by shadow. Lyra looked at him. “You.” His black eyes met hers. “You said I was the Heart Queen.” “Yes.” “What does that mean?” Darian didn't answer immediately. Instead, he studied her face. His expression was impossible to read. Then he whispered: “It means the four of us have been searching for you for a very long time.” Lyra's stomach tightened. “Why?” “Because you are the reason we're alive.” Riven scoffed. “Don't make it sound romantic.” Darian looked at him. “It isn't.” The words were so serious that Lyra felt a chill. Lucien stepped forward. “Lyra.” She flinched at the sound of her name. “How do you know my name?” Lucien smiled faintly. “I've known it for centuries.” She stared at him. “That isn't possible.” “No,” he said quietly. “It isn't.” Something about his voice frightened her more than his words. Lyra stepped backward. “I want my father.” None of them answered. Her heart sank. “Where is he?” Caelan looked away. Lyra's eyes filled with tears. “What did you do to him?” “Nothing,” Caelan said. “Then where is he?” “He left.” “No.” Lyra's voice became stronger. “My father would never leave me.” Caelan's jaw tightened. “He knew they were coming.” “Who?” “The kingdom.” Lyra stared at him. “What kingdom?” “Every kingdom.” He looked toward the sky. “You don't understand what happened tonight.” “I understand that four armed men broke into my home.” Caelan stepped closer. “We came because your power awakened.” “My power?” “You destroyed a shadow beast without touching it.” Lyra looked at her hands. She remembered the silver explosion. “I didn't mean to.” “That doesn't matter.” Caelan's voice softened. “It means they know you're alive.” “Who?” He hesitated. Then he said the name. “Malachor.” The room seemed to grow colder. Lyra had never heard the name before. But the moment he spoke it, something inside her recognized it. A memory flashed through her mind. A dark throne. A man with golden eyes. Blood covering her hands. Four men screaming. Lyra gasped and grabbed her head. “No…” Darian suddenly appeared beside her. He caught her before she fell. His hands were cold. But strangely gentle. “Don't fight the memory.” “What memory?” “Your past.” “I don't have a past like that!” Darian looked into her eyes. “You do.” Lyra stared at him. For one brief moment, she saw something behind his eyes. Grief. Ancient, unbearable grief. Then it vanished. He released her. Caelan looked toward the road. “We need to leave.” Riven nodded. “Now.” Lyra wiped her tears. “I'm not going anywhere with you.” Caelan frowned. “You don't have a choice.” “Yes, I do.” She surprised herself with how steady her voice sounded. “I don't know you.” "You will.” “I don't trust you.” “You shouldn't.” Caelan's answer made her pause. He didn't try to convince her. He simply looked at her as though he already knew what would happen next. Lucien walked toward the doorway. “We should tell her.” Caelan's eyes narrowed. “Tell her what?” “The truth.” Riven laughed. “Which truth?” Lucien turned around. “That we're already too late.” A low rumble echoed across the village. The ground shook. Lyra ran toward the window. Far beyond the rooftops, something enormous moved through the forest. Trees collapsed one after another. Birds exploded from the branches. A dark wave spread across the land. The villagers began screaming. Caelan immediately grabbed his sword. Riven pulled his weapon from his back. Lucien's eyes began glowing violet. Darian disappeared into the shadows. Lyra stood frozen. Then she felt it. Four heartbeats. Not theirs. Something else. Thousands of heartbeats. Moving toward them. Caelan grabbed her wrist. “We're leaving.” Lyra pulled away. “No.” He stared at her. “What?” “My father.” “Lyra—” “I won't leave him.” Caelan's expression hardened. “He's not here.” “You don't know that.” “I do.” “How?” Caelan didn't answer. Lyra's eyes narrowed. “You know where he is.” Silence. That was enough. She stepped closer. “Tell me.” Caelan looked at her for a long moment. Then he finally spoke. “Your father was never your real father.” Lyra felt the world tilt. “What?” “He was assigned to protect you.” Her breathing became shallow. “By whom?” Caelan's eyes moved toward the silver mark over her heart. “By your mother.” Lyra froze. “My mother is dead.” “I know.” “Then why would she need someone to protect me?” Caelan looked at the approaching darkness. “Because she knew this night would come.” A tear slipped down Lyra's cheek. She remembered her mother's final words from eleven years ago. When the bells ring, don't trust the men who come for you. But there had been something else. Something Lyra had forgotten. A sentence her mother had whispered while holding her face. Especially the one who looks at you like he already knows how you'll die. Lyra slowly looked at the four men. Caelan was watching her. Riven looked toward the forest. Lucien's expression was unreadable. But Darian— Darian was staring directly at her. And suddenly Lyra knew. Her mother had been talking about him. Darian's eyes darkened. “You remembered.” Lyra took a step backward. “You knew my mother.” “Yes.” “How?” He didn't answer. “Darian.” His jaw tightened. “She loved you.” Lyra's heart stopped. “My mother?” “No.” He looked at her with something painfully tender. “You.” The darkness outside reached the edge of the village. Caelan opened the door. “We have seconds.” Lyra looked at the four men. She didn't trust them. She didn't understand them. And she certainly didn't want to leave her home with them. But something inside her told her that staying would be worse. She stepped outside. The four men followed. As Lyra crossed the village gate, every remaining lantern suddenly went out. Darkness swallowed Veyra. Then, one by one, silver lights appeared among the trees. Hundreds of them. Eyes. Watching. Waiting. Riven tightened his grip on his sword. Lucien whispered something in an ancient language. Caelan stepped directly in front of Lyra. Darian moved behind her. Four men. One woman. And an army of darkness approaching. Lyra looked toward the road leading to Veyrith. For the first time in her life, she understood that there was no going back. She didn't know what waited beyond the mountains. She didn't know why four powerful men were connected to her heart. She didn't know why her mother had hidden the truth. But she knew one thing. The moment she crossed that gate, her old life ended. And somewhere far beneath the earth, an ancient heart began beating. Once. Twice. Then four times. Matching the hearts of the four men standing around her. The Heart Queen had chosen her path. And the kingdom was waiting for her return.Chapter 20The war was over. But peace did not arrive all at once.It came slowly. It came with the first sunrise that did not carry the smell of smoke. It came with soldiers lowering their weapons. It came with mothers finding their children alive. It came with villagers opening doors that had been locked for weeks. And it came with the sound of bells. Not warning bells. Not funeral bells. Not bells announcing the arrival of an enemy.Celebration bells. For the first time in centuries, the bells of Veyrith rang for peace.Lyra stood on the highest balcony of Veyrith Castle and listened. The morning sun touched the mountains, turning the snow-covered peaks gold. Below, the city slowly awakened.Veyrith was wounded.Parts of the eastern wall had collapsed. Several towers needed to be rebuilt. Streets were still covered with broken stones and remnants of the battle. But the kingdom was alive. That was enough.Lyra rested both hands on the balcony railing. Her dark hair moved gently in t
Chapter 19 The northern mountains were silent.Too silent.Lyra rode at the front of the army, the wind pulling at her dark hair as the ruined towers of the First Kingdom appeared beyond the horizon.Behind her rode the four kings.Caelan carried the blue banner of Veyrith.Riven carried the red banner of Drakhar.Lucien carried the golden banner of Aurelis.Darian carried the black banner of Noctis. For the first time in history, the four kingdoms marched together. Not against each other. Not for power. But for one another. And at the center of their army rode the Heart Queen.Lyra looked toward the ruins.“I remember this place.”Caelan looked at her.“From your past life?”She nodded.“I died here.”Riven tightened his grip on his sword.“Then you won't die here again.”Lyra looked at him.“That isn't a promise you can make.”Riven's expression hardened.“Then I'll make a different one.”He looked toward the ruins.“I'll fight until I can't.”Darian smiled faintly.“And I'll fight
Chapter 18 Morning came to Veyrith beneath a silver sky.For the first time in centuries, there were no black clouds above the castle. The people of Veyrith stepped cautiously from their homes, staring toward the eastern walls where Malachor's army had gathered during the night. But the army had stopped. No attack came.No arrows flew.No soldiers marched. They were waiting. And inside the castle, something even more important was happening.Lyra stood in the throne room. She had never seen it so full.Nobles filled the marble floor.Soldiers stood along the walls.Representatives from distant kingdoms had arrived after feeling the awakening of the Heart Queen. And at the center of the room stood four men.Caelan.Darian.Lucien.Riven.They were not wearing armor. They wore the ceremonial clothing of their kingdoms.Caelan wore deep blue.Darian wore black.Lucien wore white and gold.Riven wore dark red.Behind them stood four crowns. The crowns of four kingdoms.Lyra looked at the
Chapter 17 Lyra could not breathe.Darkness covered her eyes. For a moment, she heard nothing except the enormous heartbeat beneath the castle.Boom.Her knees weakened.Boom.Caelan caught her before she fell.“Lyra!”His voice sounded far away. She tried to answer, but another voice rose inside her mind. You are mine.Malachor.Lyra squeezed her eyes shut.“No.”The darkness tightened around her.You were born from my fear.“No.”You cannot escape me.Lyra opened her eyes. They were silver again. She pushed herself away from Caelan and stood. The four men stared at her.Riven reached for his sword.“Lyra?”She looked at him.“I’m still here.”Darian stepped closer.“But something entered you.”“I know.”Lucien looked toward the black heart.“Then we need to remove it.”Lyra shook her head.“No.”Everyone stopped.“I don't think it entered me.”She placed her hand over her heart.“I think it woke something that was already inside me.”The mysterious woman who had called herself Sera
Chapter 16 The bells of Veyrith continued to ring. Not in celebration. In warning.Lyra stood in the ruined courtyard, rain sliding down her face as thousands of black banners appeared beyond the eastern walls. The army of the Hollow King had arrived. For a moment, nobody moved. Then Caelan stepped forward.“Close the gates.”The soldiers rushed to obey.“Archers to the eastern towers!”“Prepare the wounded!”“Wake every guard!”Veyrith came alive around them. But Lyra couldn't move. Her eyes remained fixed on the distant army.Malachor had survived.Worse, he had followed them.Riven stood beside her.“You're thinking about what happened in the Hollow Realm.”Lyra nodded.“I thought cleansing the heart would stop him.”Lucien looked toward the sky.“Perhaps it did.”Darian's expression remained dark.“Or perhaps we only weakened him.”Caelan turned toward Lyra.“Either way, we cannot fight an army from the courtyard.”Lyra looked at him.“Then where do we fight?”Before Caelan could
Chapter 15 The Hollow Realm trembled.Silver light filled the ancient castle as Lyra stood beside the four men.Caelan's blue heartstone burned like a frozen star.Darian's black heartstone pulsed with living shadows.Lucien's golden heartstone radiated warmth.Riven's red heartstone burned like fire. And at the center of them all was Lyra. The Heart Queen. Her silver crown floated above her head, brighter than any crown she had ever seen.Across the ruined hall, Malachor stared at them. His expression was no longer amused. It was furious.“You think this changes anything?” he asked.Lyra raised her chin.“Yes.”Malachor laughed.“You have no idea what you've awakened.”The enormous black heart beneath the castle suddenly cracked.A shockwave exploded through the Hollow Realm.Caelan grabbed Lyra.“Stay behind us!”“No.”Lyra stepped forward.“I won't hide anymore.”Malachor lifted his hand.Darkness erupted from the floor.Thousands of shadow creatures crawled from the cracks.Riven
