I couldn't breathe.

One minute, Alpha Moretti was talking, the next minute, I was running so fast that I could barely feel my feet touch the floor.

“....passed out. My men took her to the pack clinic and….”

I stopped hearing him after those words and sprinted out of the room and out the building. Sofia had taken me to the pack clinic once so I knew where to find it. Sure, it would have been faster getting in a car but I wasn't thinking logically and wouldn't have been able to sit still.

The pack doctor, Dr Brown, stopped me just as I went through the doors to the immaculately white building. He took one look at my disheveled state and led me into a room.

“Where is she?” I asked, looking around and was disappointed to see that we were in an office and not a treatment room. I paused, swallowing mouthfuls of air so I breathe.

“Luna Elara, please I need you to calm down. Your grandmother was brought here some minutes ago and she-”

I shook my head. “I don't care, just take me to her. Yo

The gasp pulled me out of the nightmare and back to reality. I took deep breaths in an attempt to calm myself down. My heart was beating erratically in my chest and I could feel beads of sweat rolling down the sides of my face. Even the sheets on the spot I laid were damp. I could still feel the eyes looking at me and it felt so real. Like he or she was right there, staring at me but I couldn't see them. The feeling made me uneasy and the hairs at the nape of my neck rose.My room was still a bit dark, only illuminated by the lamps but I could easily tell it wasn't even dawn yet. The feeling was growing stronger and I couldn't take it. My eyes travelled to the digital clock, 5:17. Close enough.I walked to the door and banged on the door. “Open up, please. I can't stay here.”“Do you need help, Luna?” A strange voice from the other side of the door.I froze. “Who….who are you? And where's Trevor?” I asked, stammering slightly.“His shift ended, I took over.’I figured they rotated

For the rest of the week, I successfully avoided Alpha Moretti like a plague. He had said nothing about any punishment and I was relieved. I couldn't imagine what would be worse than almost getting strangled to death by my mate.Only Sofia had noticed the bruise on my neck, or at least, she was the only one who asked me about it. I didn't answer her but I guess my silence was more than enough response judging by how her eyes hardened. She was fussing over me a lot, and it started making me feel uneasy. I was used to doing things myself and not having anyone care about me except my grandmother. But then, grannie Alba was gone and Sofia made me feel like I was replacing her. For the two days leading up to that day, I changed my daily routine from spending my afternoons in the garden to spending it in the kitchen with the kitchen staff. At first, they were absolutely floored to see me and the discomfort made them keep trying to get me to leave in the most polite way. But soon enough

It was Elara.“What do you think you're doing?” I asked and she jumped, staring at me with wide eyes.“I…n…nothing. I was looking for you,” she stammered, moving away from the table.I closed the door behind me, advancing further into the wide room. With each step I took towards her, she took two back until she hit her back against the wall. She whined like a wounded kitten. Why was she in my office? And what was she looking amongst confidential files? Raka tried to pull me back but I ignored him. I took slow steps towards her shaking frame, like a predator taunting its prey.I stopped in front of her. “What were you doing looking through my files, Elara?” I asked one more time. She swallowed. “The door was opened slightly and I thought I heard someone in here so I came in to check,” she said shakily.I raised a brow in irritation. She was so dumb, it infuriated me.“Hey! Don't call our mate dumb,” Raka said in my head.“If she's not dumb, then she should stop acting like it,” I r

The wolf became a blur of black fur and red dot in my eyes. I went momentarily deaf from the loud roar that erupted from the pack wolves. I was frozen in that moment of terror and I could only watch as the wolf closed the distance between us. I could see its massive paws kicking up dirt from the damp earth and the world seemed to slow around me. My eyesight became sharper instantly and I could vividly see every stark detail.A sharp, deafening crack split through the air. The rogue wolf, mid-leap, yelped in a sickening high-pitched whine just as another larger wolf swiped at its neck, sending its black head rolling across the floor. The body writhed for a moment, a pathetic heap of fur, before the movements stopped entirely. My legs, which had been frozen in place, threatened to give out. My heart hammered against my ribs, almost overshadowing the pack's shouts and the furious growl of the Alpha.“Secure the perimeter!" Alpha Moretti roared. "I want eyes on every corner of these

“Luna!” Trevor exclaimed. He didn't make a move towards me and that was probably for the best.“Trevor. I don't know what's happening,” I said honestly when I managed to stop screaming, my voice hoarse and raw. My mind was a whirlwind of grief, confusion and rage as I took a look around the room. “Calm down. You need to relax so you can stop it,” he said, holding a hand in front of me, as if shielding himself from something invisible.“I don't know how. I don't know what's going on.”“How about you start with deep breaths. Just take deep breaths and try to relax.”I saw a completely different expression on Trevor's face. He looked genuinely terrified. The realization that I had scared him, a trained warrior, added to my growing panic.I took deep breaths like he said, forcing air into my burning lungs and soon, the disruption subsided. The cracking silence returned and we both stayed quiet for the minutes that followed. Him staring at me like I had just grown a horn and I stared

The world splintered before my eyes. I saw everything I had fought for and everything I would fight for, crash right in front of me.I heard Trevor burst into the room but I couldn’t look back. Couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t move."No. No, this can't be happening." My voice came out in a choked whisper. I could barely hear myself over the frantic thrumming in my ears. I pressed my fingers harder against Grannie Alba's neck. No pulse. An icy dread, colder than her skin, seeped deep into my bones and my lunch threatened to rush back up.Dr. Brown rushed in, his face tight, followed closely by two medical assistants. Trevor must have called him through the mind link. He moved swiftly to Grannie Alba's side, the look in his eyes already confirming what my heart refused to accept. He listened with a stethoscope, checked her pupils, and performed some rapid motions. Then, he straightened, his voice low, filled with a practiced empathy that only fueled my rage. "Luna,” he said quietly. “
