Evalina's pov

"Five more days, Evalina. In five days, you will be my wife."

Leo whispered those words to me last night under the old oak tree. I held on to them as I pushed open the door of my father's house.

Two years ago, I lost my wolf. I thought my life was over. Now, with my wedding so close, it felt like it was starting again.

But the house was not quiet. Someone was crying.

"Please, Father! I can't marry Alpha Magnus!"

My half-sister, Leah, was on her knees in the middle of the living room. Father sat in his big chair with his head in his hands. My stepmother, Patricia, stood behind Leah, rubbing her back.

Leo stood beside them.

My chest went tight. "Leo? Father? What is going on?"

Nobody answered me. Leah cried louder.

"Alpha Magnus of the Ironpeak Pack is cursed!" she sobbed. "Everyone knows it. He has a rage he can't control. They say he killed his old Alpha. They say he killed his own wife, too!"

"Leah, calm down," Father said.

"How can I calm down? He even hurt his own daughter! The poor child can hardly walk. That's why he hides up in those cold mountains, where nobody can stop him." She pressed a hand to her stomach. "If I go there, it won't only be my death. It will be the death of my baby too."

The room went silent.

I stared at her. "Your baby? Leah, you're pregnant?"

She looked up at me with wet eyes. Then she reached for Leo's hand.

"Yes," she said. "And Leo is the father. We love each other."

My legs felt weak. I turned to the man I was going to marry in five days.

"Leo, tell me she's lying."

He didn't look away. He didn't even look sorry.

"She's not lying. Leah is carrying my child."

"But we are chosen mates!" My voice cracked. "Our wedding is in five days! And you got my sister pregnant?"

Patricia laughed, a short, ugly sound. "Oh, Evalina. Don't act so shocked. Leo only agreed to marry you because nobody else wanted a wolfless Luna."

Her words hit me like a slap.

"I am wolfless because of him!" I pointed at Leo. "Ironpeak's old Alpha attacked him at the border. He was dying. I begged the river witch to save him, and she took my wolf as payment. I gave up my wolf for you, Leo!"

I remembered that night clearly. Leo had held my face in his hands after he woke up.

"I love you, Evalina," he had said. "When you turn twenty, I will marry you. And one day, we will make Ironpeak pay for what they took from you."

Now he just stood there, holding my sister's hand.

"Did you ever love me?" I asked quietly. "Or was it always Leah?"

Leo opened his mouth, but Patricia stepped in front of him.

"Do you really want to marry a man whose child is growing inside your sister?" she asked. "Leah is the one who was promised to Alpha Magnus. It's part of the peace deal between our packs. If he finds out she's pregnant, he will kill us all!"

"So this is my fault now?" I asked.

"Stop thinking only of yourself!" Patricia snapped. "Think about your sister. Think about her baby. Do you want them to die in those mountains?"

Father finally raised his head. He looked tired and old.

"I can't send Alpha Magnus a pregnant bride," he said slowly. Then his eyes moved to me. "But Evalina could take her place. She is my eldest daughter, after all."

My heart dropped into my stomach.

"Father, you would send me to him? A wolfless bride for a cursed Alpha?" I shook my head. "He won't want me either. He'll think it's an insult."

"Enough!" Father slammed his hand on the arm of his chair. "This family is tearing itself apart. There is only one fair way to settle this."

He stood up and walked to the old wooden cabinet in the corner. He took out something wrapped in white cloth. When he pulled the cloth away, a silver bowl shone in the lamplight.

"The Moon Bowl," Leah whispered.

Every girl in our pack knew about it. Our grandmothers and great-grandmothers had used it for years.

"Tonight is a full moon," Father said. "We will fill the bowl with spring water and set it under the moonlight. When a woman looks into it, the water shows the face of her true mate."

Hope rose in my chest. This was my chance.

Leo's wolf had chosen me the night I lost mine. I felt it. The bowl would show his face. It had to.

We went out to the back yard. Patricia poured the water while the full moon hung bright above us. The water went still and silver.

"Evalina," Father said. "You go first."

I nodded and stepped forward. My hands were shaking.

Behind me, Leah leaned close to her mother. I heard her whisper something, and Patricia smiled.

I looked down into the bowl.

The water rippled. A face slowly appeared. Dark hair. Cold gray eyes. A long scar across the cheek.

It was not Leo.

"Alpha Magnus," Patricia said loudly. "The bowl has spoken!"

I froze. I hadn't said a word about whose face I saw. Nobody else could see into the bowl from where they stood.

So how did she already know?

Then I saw it. A thin red line, floating at the very bottom of the water.

Blood.

My grandmother's warning came back to me. *The Moon Bowl doesn't show destiny, child. It only shows whatever face has been tied to it with blood.*

I lifted my head and looked at my stepmother's smiling face.

I had been set up!

Evalina's pov "Why did you do that?" Daisy was sitting on the edge of her bed, hugging her bunny. I knelt on the floor and gently checked her bare feet for glass. "Do what?" I asked. "Take the blame. I'm the one who broke it." She sniffed. "Daddy should have been mad at me. Not you." "No," I said firmly. "You're a little girl. It was an accident. And I'm your mom now. I will always protect you." Daisy's face went hard. "You're not really my mom." The words stung, but I understood them. "You're right," I said softly. "I will never replace your real mom. Nobody ever could. But I married your father, and that means we're family now. Family looks out for each other." She was quiet for a long time. She played with the ripped ear on her bunny. "Vespera said you would hate me," she whispered. "Who is Vespera?" "A lady in our pack. She brings Daddy soup." Daisy didn't look up. "She said my new mommy would hate me because I'm broken. She said nobody wants a broken child." My ches

Evalina's povMy heart was racing.I had only known this man for two hours. Husband or not, I was not ready to share a bed with him.I took a step back and looked down at my wet boots. "I'm not ready."Magnus didn't move. He didn't say anything. I made myself look up at him."I'm sorry," I said quickly. "I know we're married. I know that's what wives do. But everything is happening so fast. Yesterday I was getting ready to marry someone else, and now...""Don't apologize."I blinked. "What?""You need time." He picked up a folded blanket from the arm of a chair. "I'll take the couch for now."I stared at him. "You would really do that for me?""I'm your husband, Evalina." He tossed the blanket onto the couch. "I know this marriage is part of a peace deal between our packs. But you are not my prisoner here."I didn't know what to say. Back in Redwater, everyone said Magnus was a monster. They said he had no heart. But monsters didn't offer to sleep on the couch."I'll take your bag to

Evalina's pov"Thank you," I said, stepping out of Magnus's arms. My legs wobbled a little on the icy porch. "I can stand now."Before he could answer, the front door creaked open.A little girl stood in the doorway. She had big brown eyes and long dark curls. One hand held a wooden crutch. The other hand held a white stuffed bunny with a small rip in one ear."Daisy," Magnus said. His voice went soft. "You should be asleep."So this was his daughter. The child from the stories. I knelt down so we were the same height and smiled at her."You must be Daisy," I said. "I'm Evalina."She looked at me for a long moment. Then she lifted her chin."Nice to meet you, Miss Evalina," she said. "Daddy says I don't have to like you. But I do have to be polite."I almost laughed. It was so honest.Magnus did not laugh. "Daisy. That wasn't polite. Go to your room."Her lip trembled, but she nodded. "Yes, Daddy."She turned and walked away slowly, her crutch tapping on the wooden floor. Tap. Step. T

Daisy's pov"Come on, Daisy. You can do this. You don't need anybody's help."I whispered the words to myself as I held on to the fence. My crutch was leaning against the post beside me. My bunny, Mr. Buttons, was tucked under my arm.One step. Just one step without the crutch.I let go of the fence. My left leg shook. My right leg felt like it was made of jelly."Look, everybody! The broken little Alpha pup is trying to walk!"I didn't have to turn around. I knew that voice. It was Brody, Vespera's son. He was nine, two years older than me, and he was the meanest boy in the whole Ironpeak Pack.Four other kids ran up behind him, laughing."Leave me alone, Brody," I said. I grabbed the fence again so I wouldn't fall."Leave me alone, Brody," he copied me in a squeaky baby voice. The other kids laughed even louder. "Hey, Daisy, why don't you run away? Oh wait! You can't!"My face got hot. I picked up my crutch and held it tight."My daddy is your Alpha," I said. "You have to be nice to

Evalina's pov"Your pack promised me Leah of Redwater," Magnus said. "Not you."His gray eyes moved over me slowly, from my wet boots to my messy hair. I wanted to hide, but I made myself stand still."Leah is pregnant," I said. "With my chosen mate's child."His eyebrows rose. "So they sent you instead. And you agreed?""Yes."He stepped closer. Snow crunched under his bare feet, but he didn't seem to feel the cold at all."Haven't you heard the stories about me?" he asked. "That I'm cursed. That I lose control. That I killed my last Alpha and my own Luna. That I hurt my daughter so badly she can only walk with a crutch."My heart was pounding, but I kept my voice steady."I've heard them.""And you still came?""I don't listen to rumors," I said. "I care about getting away from my horrible family. I care about bringing peace between our packs. As long as I can do that, I don't care who I marry."For a long moment, he just looked at me. Something in his face changed. The hard lines a

Evalina's pov"Patricia, look at me and tell me the truth!"My stepmother pressed a hand to her chest like I had hurt her. "I swear on my life, Evalina, I don't know anything about blood in that bowl.""You spoke before I even said whose face I saw!" I shouted. "How did you know it was Alpha Magnus? You knew because you put him there. All of you did!"I looked at each of them. Leah hid behind Leo. Father wouldn't meet my eyes."You wanted the bowl to show Magnus," I said, "so Leah could stay here with Leo and their baby."Nobody denied it. The silence said everything.I turned to my father. "You're choosing Leah over me. Again."Father sighed. "Leah could never survive up in Ironpeak.""And I can?" I laughed, but it hurt. "I don't even have a wolf, Father!""Leah is carrying a cub!" Patricia snapped. "Magnus lives far away in those freezing mountains. He is cursed, and his rage has no limits. He already has a crippled child from his first wife. We can't send Leah into that nightmare."
