Evalina's pov

"Thank you," I said, stepping out of Magnus's arms. My legs wobbled a little on the icy porch. "I can stand now."

Before he could answer, the front door creaked open.

A little girl stood in the doorway. She had big brown eyes and long dark curls. One hand held a wooden crutch. The other hand held a white stuffed bunny with a small rip in one ear.

"Daisy," Magnus said. His voice went soft. "You should be asleep."

So this was his daughter. The child from the stories. I knelt down so we were the same height and smiled at her.

"You must be Daisy," I said. "I'm Evalina."

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she lifted her chin.

"Nice to meet you, Miss Evalina," she said. "Daddy says I don't have to like you. But I do have to be polite."

I almost laughed. It was so honest.

Magnus did not laugh. "Daisy. That wasn't polite. Go to your room."

Her lip trembled, but she nodded. "Yes, Daddy."

She turned and walked away slowly, her crutch tapping on the wooden floor. Tap. Step. Tap. Step.

"It's okay," I told Magnus as I stood up. "She doesn't have to like me. I'm a stranger in her house."

He looked at me with surprise, like that wasn't the answer he expected. Then he sighed and leaned against the doorframe.

"Daisy got hurt the night her mother died," he said quietly.

My heart beat faster. "The night your Luna was killed?"

"Yes." His jaw tightened. "Her leg was badly broken. I've taken her to every healer in these mountains and beyond. They all say the same thing. The bone has healed. She should be able to walk by now."

"But she still uses the crutch?"

"She won't walk without it. Not even one step." He rubbed his face with his hand. "I think she's still trying to get over losing her mother."

He paused. "We both are."

The pain in his voice was real. I could hear it.

"Then I hope I can help her feel safe again," I said. "I know what it's like to lose a part of yourself. I know what it's like when everyone looks at you like you're broken."

Magnus turned his head and stared at me. His gray eyes were so intense that I had to look away.

He didn't say anything. He just kept watching me, like he was trying to see something deep inside me that I couldn't see myself.

I wrapped his coat tighter around my body and looked out at the dark trees.

Everyone in Redwater said Magnus killed his first Luna in one of his cursed rages. And Daisy got hurt that same night.

Was it true? Did he really do it? Did his own claws tear his family apart?

I looked back at him. He was still watching me.

"Shall we go inside?" he asked.

"Yes," I said quickly. "Please."

As I turned toward the door, something moved at the edge of the forest. I stopped.

A woman in a red coat stood between the trees, half hidden in the falling snow. Her eyes glowed yellow in the dark. She was staring right at me.

I blinked, and she was gone.

"Evalina?" Magnus called from inside.

"Coming," I said. I rubbed my arms and hurried through the door.

The house was not what I expected at all.

I thought the cursed Alpha would live in a cold stone castle full of chains and shadows. Instead, it was a wooden house with low ceilings and thick beams. A fire crackled in a big stone fireplace. Soft blankets lay over the chairs. The walls were covered with old paintings of wolves running through the snow.

"This is beautiful," I said. "It feels so warm. So cozy."

Magnus closed the door behind us. "Most people just call it old."

"Old means it survived," I said, running my hand along the smooth wooden wall. "I respect that."

He was quiet for a moment. When I looked back at him, that small smile was on his face again.

"My great-great-grandparents built this house with their own hands," he said. "They were the very first Alphas of the Ironpeak Pack. Every Alpha after them has lived here."

"It's wonderful."

"There's just one thing." He scratched the back of his neck. "The house only has two bedrooms."

I turned around slowly. "Two?"

"Daisy has one. I have the other."

I looked at the hallway. I could see two doors. Just two.

"So..." My voice came out small. "Where am I sleeping?"

Magnus took off his snowy boots and set them by the fire. Then he looked straight at me.

"With me."

My mouth dropped open. "With you? In your bedroom?"

"Yes."

"But we barely know each other!" My cheeks were burning. "We met two hours ago. In the snow. While rogues were trying to eat me!"

Magnus walked slowly toward me. He stopped so close that I had to tilt my head back to look at his face. The firelight danced in his gray eyes.

"We are married," he said in a low voice. "Aren't we?"

Evalina's pov "Why did you do that?" Daisy was sitting on the edge of her bed, hugging her bunny. I knelt on the floor and gently checked her bare feet for glass. "Do what?" I asked. "Take the blame. I'm the one who broke it." She sniffed. "Daddy should have been mad at me. Not you." "No," I said firmly. "You're a little girl. It was an accident. And I'm your mom now. I will always protect you." Daisy's face went hard. "You're not really my mom." The words stung, but I understood them. "You're right," I said softly. "I will never replace your real mom. Nobody ever could. But I married your father, and that means we're family now. Family looks out for each other." She was quiet for a long time. She played with the ripped ear on her bunny. "Vespera said you would hate me," she whispered. "Who is Vespera?" "A lady in our pack. She brings Daddy soup." Daisy didn't look up. "She said my new mommy would hate me because I'm broken. She said nobody wants a broken child." My ches

Evalina's povMy heart was racing.I had only known this man for two hours. Husband or not, I was not ready to share a bed with him.I took a step back and looked down at my wet boots. "I'm not ready."Magnus didn't move. He didn't say anything. I made myself look up at him."I'm sorry," I said quickly. "I know we're married. I know that's what wives do. But everything is happening so fast. Yesterday I was getting ready to marry someone else, and now...""Don't apologize."I blinked. "What?""You need time." He picked up a folded blanket from the arm of a chair. "I'll take the couch for now."I stared at him. "You would really do that for me?""I'm your husband, Evalina." He tossed the blanket onto the couch. "I know this marriage is part of a peace deal between our packs. But you are not my prisoner here."I didn't know what to say. Back in Redwater, everyone said Magnus was a monster. They said he had no heart. But monsters didn't offer to sleep on the couch."I'll take your bag to

Daisy's pov"Come on, Daisy. You can do this. You don't need anybody's help."I whispered the words to myself as I held on to the fence. My crutch was leaning against the post beside me. My bunny, Mr. Buttons, was tucked under my arm.One step. Just one step without the crutch.I let go of the fence. My left leg shook. My right leg felt like it was made of jelly."Look, everybody! The broken little Alpha pup is trying to walk!"I didn't have to turn around. I knew that voice. It was Brody, Vespera's son. He was nine, two years older than me, and he was the meanest boy in the whole Ironpeak Pack.Four other kids ran up behind him, laughing."Leave me alone, Brody," I said. I grabbed the fence again so I wouldn't fall."Leave me alone, Brody," he copied me in a squeaky baby voice. The other kids laughed even louder. "Hey, Daisy, why don't you run away? Oh wait! You can't!"My face got hot. I picked up my crutch and held it tight."My daddy is your Alpha," I said. "You have to be nice to

Evalina's pov"Your pack promised me Leah of Redwater," Magnus said. "Not you."His gray eyes moved over me slowly, from my wet boots to my messy hair. I wanted to hide, but I made myself stand still."Leah is pregnant," I said. "With my chosen mate's child."His eyebrows rose. "So they sent you instead. And you agreed?""Yes."He stepped closer. Snow crunched under his bare feet, but he didn't seem to feel the cold at all."Haven't you heard the stories about me?" he asked. "That I'm cursed. That I lose control. That I killed my last Alpha and my own Luna. That I hurt my daughter so badly she can only walk with a crutch."My heart was pounding, but I kept my voice steady."I've heard them.""And you still came?""I don't listen to rumors," I said. "I care about getting away from my horrible family. I care about bringing peace between our packs. As long as I can do that, I don't care who I marry."For a long moment, he just looked at me. Something in his face changed. The hard lines a

Evalina's pov"Patricia, look at me and tell me the truth!"My stepmother pressed a hand to her chest like I had hurt her. "I swear on my life, Evalina, I don't know anything about blood in that bowl.""You spoke before I even said whose face I saw!" I shouted. "How did you know it was Alpha Magnus? You knew because you put him there. All of you did!"I looked at each of them. Leah hid behind Leo. Father wouldn't meet my eyes."You wanted the bowl to show Magnus," I said, "so Leah could stay here with Leo and their baby."Nobody denied it. The silence said everything.I turned to my father. "You're choosing Leah over me. Again."Father sighed. "Leah could never survive up in Ironpeak.""And I can?" I laughed, but it hurt. "I don't even have a wolf, Father!""Leah is carrying a cub!" Patricia snapped. "Magnus lives far away in those freezing mountains. He is cursed, and his rage has no limits. He already has a crippled child from his first wife. We can't send Leah into that nightmare."
