I had no intention of telling anyone I was leaving.

Seraphina hooked her arm through our brother Adrian's and asked sweetly, "Is Budapest fun?"

Everyone flocked back to her. The hall filled with laughter again.

I turned toward my room to pack, but someone caught my wrist.

Julian.

"Remember to get Seraphina's luggage ready," he said under his breath. "Don't leave behind a single gown or piece of jewelry. As soon as the coming-of-age ceremony is over, we're going to Budapest. You might as well come work under us instead of chasing whatever little job you've found."

His gaze traveled over me before he added, "I'm thinking of your future. You never managed to awaken your bloodline ability, after all."

I stared at him, hearing the academy physician's diagnosis all over again.

"Vivian, the main reason your ability hasn't awakened is malnutrition. With proper nourishment and rest, there's every chance you'll recover."

The answer to a problem that had haunted me for years had been that simple.

But even if I never awakened an ability, so what?

My suitcase already held my patents and my certified alchemist's credentials. I had spent years being called useless because my bloodline remained dormant. In response, I buried myself in my studies at the vampire academy, practically living in its laboratories until I graduated at the top of my alchemy class.

Seraphina, meanwhile, cut classes, failed courses, and partied with her friends. At one of those parties, she exposed her vampire identity in front of humans and was expelled.

When we returned home, no one asked what I had learned or how I had lived abroad. Seraphina walked through the door with tears in her eyes and threw herself into our parents' arms, saying she had disappointed them.

"It doesn't matter," Mom told her. "Diploma or not, you'll always be the Vardi family's pride and joy."

Adrian immediately agreed. "Just enjoy being our little princess. I'll always be here. If nothing else, the family can support you for life."

Julian comforted her, too. "Don't be upset. Even if your studies didn't go well, there's still Vivian. Besides, with Vivian around, you'll never be the family's biggest embarrassment."

In their eyes, I would always fall short of Seraphina.

As far back as I could remember, every gaze had turned toward her. We were twins, but she was the dazzling one, the one who always knew exactly what to say to charm our elders. Mom and Dad proudly took her to every vampire banquet.

I might as well have been forgotten in the quietest corner of the estate. Even the servants walked past as though I weren't there.

When I was hungry, I slipped into the cold-storage room and drank old blood by myself. Once, when my parents caught me, they didn't look concerned. They praised me for being so undemanding.

We had been born on the same day, with the same face, but there was room in their hearts for only one of us.

Adrian remembered to commission extravagant gowns for her. Julian gave her a red diamond brooch engraved with his family's crest.

It had been my birthday, too. No one remembered. When they finally did, they waved it away with a promise to make it up to me next time.

When we first left for the academy, everyone worried that Seraphina would have trouble adjusting. I was left to fend for myself.

Keeping up with the nobility cost money. I had none. I survived on hard bread and spent my days in the library and alchemy lab while everyone laughed at the penniless, useless girl who didn't know how to behave like a lady.

That same girl graduated first in her class and brought home the academy's most prestigious trophy.

My family never spared it a glance.

Looking at Julian's easy smile, I finally asked him, "Didn't you once tell me your greatest dream was to take over your family's winery?"

He paused, then shrugged. "I've moved past that. I'll go wherever Seraphina wants to go. If she wants Budapest, then Budapest it is."

He used to tell me the winery was the heart of the Moretti family's business. If he took control of it, he would become their heir. Now he was willing to give up even that for Seraphina.

I finally understood. Staying would accomplish nothing except proving, again and again, how little they cared about me.

I said nothing else. I returned to my room in the tower and began packing my belongings, one by one.

Julian and Adrian stormed into the shop."Vivian, I swear you'll regret it if you betray the Vardi family!" Adrian shouted, pointing straight at my face.Julian noticed the prince and his entourage, and his tone immediately became more restrained."Vivian, we're family. Whatever happened before is in the past. Stop holding a grudge and come home with us."The prince's expression cooled at the interruption. He glanced at Rex. A moment later, several guards swept in from outside and forced both men onto their knees. The entire movement was swift and silent.Adrian lay pinned to the floor, yet he still refused to back down."Traitor! If you say one word against us, I'll kill you!"The prince looked at me."Are these two members of your family?"I nodded. I knew exactly how much trouble their outburst would bring on themselves and the family behind them.I curtsied to the prince."All I want is to live quietly without being disturbed. I'm grateful for your generosity, but I don

Julian didn't leave after that night.During the day, he hid from the sunlight. But as soon as the sun went down, he stood outside my shop beneath a black umbrella.A few days later, Adrian arrived, too.He still carried himself as though he were above everyone else. Yet whenever I looked his way, he turned his head, unable to meet my eyes. Finally, Julian gave him a push, and he stepped inside. He forced himself to sound as arrogant as he used to."I figured you'd left the Vardi family to make something of yourself. But this is what you've accomplished? Running a pathetic little flower shop?"I had no interest in talking to him. I tried to walk past.He grew angrier when I ignored him."Vivian, what kind of attitude is that?""The kind you're getting. If you don't like it, get out."His face reddened. He raised his hand, but Julian grabbed his arm and stopped him.Adrian snorted, jerked free, and turned back to me."You must be so pleased with yourself! Because of you, Mo

At noon, my daylight ring glowed faintly on my finger.I walked along the waterfront of a little town at the southern tip of Crete, completely unharmed beneath the brilliant sun. Any ordinary vampire who saw me would have been stunned.I reached the street-facing house I'd rented in advance and moved in.When I'd finished unpacking, I collapsed onto the sofa. For the first time in years, my whole body felt light.I opened the windows. Birds sang above the wash of the surf, and a sea breeze drifted through the room. There was only one sound missing: the endless criticism that had followed me all my life.I stretched without a care in the world. My landlady, Eleni Markou, happened to see the bruises on my wrists and around my waist. She said nothing. But the next morning, I found a little bag hanging from my door handle. Inside was a tube of ointment. After all these years, the first genuine kindness I'd felt had come from a human stranger.I'd made a decent amount of money selli

The elder who had praised Seraphina so extravagantly changed his tune at once.He set down his glass and scoffed. "I thought Seraphina must be extraordinary, considering how much you've invested in her. Now I see you've simply propped up your favorite child while ignoring the daughter with actual talent.""Exactly," another guest agreed. "We all saw what happened earlier. Seraphina, isn't that brooch on your dress Vivian's?"Seraphina's face turned white. She shrank behind Mom and instinctively covered the blood diamond on her chest.Adrian was still struggling with the photograph."No. Something isn't right. Vivian never even had a proper mentor. She never came with us when we bought supplies. How could she possibly have won all those awards?"He was right about one thing: I'd never had a mentor, much less any professional guidance from my family. My parents thought only of Seraphina. Not once had they asked if I needed help. With no one willing to give me a hand, I had forced

Back at the banquet, Mom and Dad were still drinking with the family's elders and fussing over Seraphina. They told anyone willing to listen about the Budapest businesses she was about to take over, growing more animated with every retelling. Each time, they finished by asking the elders to look after her in the future. The elders were happy to oblige. Seraphina was beautiful, charming, and clever, they said. The Vardi family's future was in excellent hands.Adrian stood beside our parents, pride written all over his face."At last I have a capable partner," he announced. "Together, we'll make the Vardi name famous across the vampire world. When Seraphina officially takes charge, I'll gladly serve as her second. As long as she's happy, I'm happy."The hall was still celebrating when the doors suddenly swung open.A group of imposing visitors entered. At their head was a cold-faced man in a sharply tailored black suit, a silver insignia pinned to his collar.A guest recognized hi

Before she died, Grandma had two gemstones our grandfather had given her made into brooches. She even hired a witch to engrave magical patterns on them. She promised one to each of us.Mine held a blood diamond that nourished the blood and strengthened the body. Seraphina's held a moonstone that enhanced her bloodline ability. Both were rare treasures worth a fortune. But while we were abroad, Seraphina had gambled away her moonstone brooch at an underground casino. The blood rushed to my head. I practically screamed at her."Seraphina, give me back my brooch!"I lunged toward her, reaching for the blood diamond pinned to her chest. She took a startled step backward.Mom immediately moved between us and shielded her."Vivian! What do you think you're doing?" she snapped. "Look around you. Is this really how you want to embarrass the entire Vardi family?""Seraphina stole my brooch!" I shouted back, my eyes burning.Mom let out a scornful laugh. "Your brooch? Don't be ridicul
