Chapter 2

Author: Sweet Arsenic
Adam's POV

The next day, I went to the animal welfare center.

On paper, I was there to return the equipment the wedding planning agency had borrowed earlier for a shoot.

All the volunteers there knew Kristy. They also knew the "boyfriend" featured on that account.

I'd barely set the equipment case down when a young woman sidled over enthusiastically.

"You're Kristy's friend, right? Is she coming today too?"

I shook my head. "I'm just here to return some equipment."

"Oh, I see."

She looked a little disappointed, but she quickly smiled again. "That's fine, as long as Victor's coming. The two of them are always together anyway."

Another volunteer who was feeding a cat chimed in, "Right? Kristy and Victor are literally the model couple around here. They're so sweet together!"

"Oh look! Kristy's boyfriend is here!"

"Hi, Victor!"

Their words made my temples throb with a dull ache. I turned around and saw "Kristy's boyfriend".

Victor Olsen.

He was surrounded by several volunteers, laughing as he said, "Come on, guys. Don't call me that. We're just work partners."

Despite what he said, there wasn't a hint of embarrassment on his face at being misunderstood.

Just then, Kristy arrived, carrying cans of food for the stray animals. She walked naturally over to Victor's side.

The volunteers immediately started teasing them.

"Kristy, you're here to do charity work with your sweetheart again?"

Kristy chuckled and didn't correct them. Not even a single word was spoken.

When her eyes swept across the room and happened upon me, they lingered briefly.

Just then, a representative from one of the sponsors walked over and asked curiously, "Kristy, who's this?"

In that second, my heart still skipped a beat. I couldn't help but wait for her to tell them that I was her fiance.

Instead, Kristy just answered in the most matter-of-fact tone, "A friend. He's handling the video for our wedding."

A friend.

On the eve of our wedding, in front of people who assumed she and Victor were a couple, she'd casually brushed me off as just a friend.

I still remembered how, three years ago, when she'd won a major industry award, reporters and media outlets had swarmed her at the celebration party.

I instinctively wanted to stand by her side, but she pulled me into a corner and said, "There are too many people and cameras here. Stay out of sight for the time being."

Back then, I'd thought she was protecting me in her own way. Only now did I realize that keeping me hidden had always been her long-standing rule—a rule that applied only to me.

In the nearby studio, the livestream was about to start.

Victor's lapel mic was sitting slightly crooked. Kristy walked over naturally, leaned down, and carefully clipped it into the perfect position on his collar.

Her movements were practiced and intimate, as if she'd done it countless times before.

Victor looked down at her.

"That light almost blinded me just now," he whined.

She immediately turned to the lighting technician. "Switch to a soft light. His eyes are sensitive."

Then she began adjusting the camera angle for him, asking him to lean against her shoulder so he could get a feel for the shot.

In that moment, the focus and tenderness in her eyes were the same things I'd seen countless times through her camera lens.

Once the livestream started, Victor pulled something shiny from his pocket and held it up to the camera.

"Ta-da! Check out our custom collab pet tag!"

It was a silver, bone-shaped tag engraved with the name of their account—"KS&VO".

Kristy smiled as she took it from him and personally hung it around his neck.

The live chat instantly blew up.

"OMG! Are they hard launching their relationship right now?"

"My ship is sailing! I've thrown away the anchor!"

I couldn't watch any longer. I turned and walked out.

Once I got home, I opened the cloud drive we shared. In our five years together, we'd been to many places and taken so many photos.

I opened the folders organized by date and started scrolling through them from the day they started that account three years ago.

Folder after folder, thousands of photos and video clips—all of them were of Victor. His smiles, his goofing around, him holding cats, his side profile as he fell asleep leaning on Kristy… Everything had been meticulously organized and preserved by her.

And me? I searched the archive for my own name, but nothing came up. The only proof of my existence in that entire collection was a single unusable shot from three years ago. In that photo, all I got was a shot of her back as she walked away.

Because she'd told me not to take pictures of her.

I'd been by her side for five years.

Yet, in her digital records, I was practically nonexistent.

I shut down the computer and dragged a dusty file box out of the storage room. I had originally bought it for moving into our new home.

But now, I was using it to pack up my past.

My films, my restoration tools, the old camera Grandma had left me… Everything that belonged to me went into the box, one by one.

I didn't explain to Kristy what I was doing. I no longer needed her lens or her validation.

When I logged out of that shared cloud drive, a system prompt popped up.

"You will lose access to thousands of media files spanning the past three years."

Without backing anything up, I clicked "Confirm".

Adam's POVOne year later, my solo restoration exhibition, "The Absentee", opened at Orvale's premier art center. The exhibition's main promotional image was a self-portrait I'd restored from my reflection in the glass of that family photo.I was expressionless in that photo. I simply looked calmly beyond the lens.On opening day, Kristy showed up.She booked a ticket online like any other visitor and entered with the rest of the crowd. She quietly made her way through the exhibit, then wrote a single line in the guest book."Congratulations on finding yourself."She left right after writing that. She didn't stay to say anything else.I thought that would be our final interaction that year. That was until the final night of the exhibition. A heavy downpour fell over Orvale that night. When I carried the last batch of archived materials out through the back entrance, getting ready to head back to the studio, I found her standing right under the streetlamp in the parking lot

Adam's POVAfter that, Kristy never came looking for me again. However, I could still see traces of her online.First, that pet account of hers, which had millions of followers, posted a lengthy statement. She didn't delete the videos of Victor and her behaving like a couple but instead left them up as evidence. In the statement, she laid out the entire timeline of our relationship alongside her working timeline with Victor. She publicly admitted that she had not only allowed the public to mistake her and Victor for a couple, but had even actively encouraged that perception. She confessed to selectively sharing what suited her and holding herself to a double standard. She didn't push any blame onto Victor, nor did she blame her fans for reading too much into things. She took full responsibility herself.Right after that, she terminated all commercial partnerships that had relied on their couple dynamic as a selling point. In accordance with the contracts, she refunded the funds

Adam's POVOver the next few months, Kristy came back twice. The first time, she brought over a batch of old photographs needed for the restoration exhibition. The other time, she made up an excuse, saying she wanted to check on the exhibition feedback.I knew what she really wanted to talk about had nothing to do with the exhibition. That day, she sat in front of the workbench for a long time while I sorted through rolls of film. Eventually, she pushed an external hard drive toward me."These are all the pictures I've taken of you over the past three years."Her eyes were slightly red, and her voice trembled badly."I thought keeping these for my own private collection was what love was."With shaking hands, she pulled out her phone and opened one of the backed-up photos. It was a picture of me, head bowed as I helped her wipe her camera lens. The warm golden light of sunset fell across the side of my face, creating an incredibly tender composition."This is you helping me w

Adam's POVEight months passed in the blink of an eye, and my life in Orvale settled into a comfortable routine.Restoring old film was work that required immense patience and focus. I immersed myself in it and barely kept in touch with anyone outside of work.I became the lead on the restoration project, overseeing a small team. I even made a few new friends who shared my interests. On weekends, we'd go hiking, hunt for new restaurants, or catch whatever new movie that had just come out.My life no longer revolved solely around Kristy Simpson.I thought life would just carry on like this, with each of us living our own lives in peace. That was, until the day the exhibition featuring the restored film I'd worked on opened at the Orvale Art Museum. After the exhibition ended, a familiar yet almost unfamiliar figure appeared at the entrance to the gallery. It was Kristy. She'd lost a lot of weight, and she was much quieter, too. The pride that had once defined her had now been r

Third-Person POVIn the empty house, Kristy's phone started ringing again. It was her mother."Kristy, it's just as well that the wedding is canceled. Adam is far too quiet and reserved. He's not a good fit for our family."There was no disappointment in Susanne's voice. If anything, she sounded relieved.Susanne continued, "Besides, Victor is a great guy. He's outgoing and cheerful, and you two get along so well. I invited him over for dinner tonight, so come home early."Kristy gripped her phone tightly. For the first time, she found herself resisting her mother's plans."Mom, stop making random matches.""How is that random?" Susanne demanded, her voice rising. "Victor has been shooting videos with you for three years. And look how natural you two looked when he stood next to you in our family photos! The whole internet says you two were made for each other. How can they all be wrong?"Kristy couldn't refute her because everything she said was true.Right after she hung up,

Third-Person POVKristy was on her way to the wedding planning agency when she got the first phone call.It was from her best friend, who was also her maid of honor."Kristy, what on earth is going on with you and Adam? Why'd you suddenly cancel the wedding? I've got friends and relatives blowing up my phone asking me what happened!"Kristy tightened her grip on the steering wheel. She asked, "He was the one who sent it?""Obviously! It went out to everyone! Did you do something to hurt him?"Kristy hung up, her expression dark. She was convinced Adam was just throwing a tantrum, and this was nothing but a childish stunt. But when she arrived at the wedding planning agency and saw the place completely empty of any of their wedding paraphernalia, she finally realized something was wrong. The photography display that was supposed to be filled with photos of the two of them was completely blank, and all the shuttles reserved for their guests had been canceled as well. The weddin
