Chapter 3

Author: Sweet Arsenic
Adam's POV

The family photoshoot was scheduled at Kristy's photography studio.

Susanne Wilson, her mother and my future mother-in-law, who had always been polite and courteous with me, was especially enthusiastic that day. But that enthusiasm wasn't directed at me.

"Victor, hurry. Come stand next to Kristy."

She took Victor by the hand and affectionately positioned him in the center of the main set, right next to Kristy.

Victor looked a little embarrassed and shot me a glance.

"Mrs. Simpson, is this really okay? Adam is right there."

"Oh, please. You've been partners with Kristy for so long, you're practically family. What's one picture?" Susanne retorted, chuckling warmly.

Then she turned to me. "Adam, since you know photography, we'll have to trouble you today. You can help with the lights and hold up the reflector."

Just like that, I was demoted from future son-in-law to crew member.

I stood outside the set, holding the heavy reflector while I watched them pose under the studio lights.

Kristy, her parents, and Victor stood together, forming a picture-perfect family portrait.

And I wasn't included in it. Something seemed to be pressing heavily on my chest, making it hard to breathe.

Susanne seemed to notice my mood.

"Adam, smile a little. Don't bring down everyone's good mood," she called out from behind the camera.

To her, my silence was ruining the atmosphere.

I looked over at Kristy, hoping she'd say something. Instead, she just knitted her brows and mouthed to me, "Think about the big picture."

It was that same phrase again. She always used ideas such as "be grateful" and "mind the occasion" to demand my compliance and make me give in time and time again.

During the shoot, a harsh beam of light hit Victor directly in the face, making him squint instinctively.

Kristy noticed immediately. "Turn the light down a little. Use the softbox."

She remembered he was sensitive to bright lights. She remembered every little habit of his. Yet, she'd completely forgotten that I had an old wrist injury and couldn't hold heavy objects for too long.

The reflector grew heavier by the second, and a familiar ache spread through my wrist. I'd fractured it three years ago when I fell while trying to protect her precious Leica camera.

I still remembered how frantic she'd been that day, and how she'd stayed outside the treatment room the whole night.

Later, she hand-crafted a weight-reducing camera strap for me, and for months, she insisted on carrying my gear bags.

That same strap was later taken by her and used to decorate Victor's livestream setup. She'd said it looked good on camera.

These memories made my chest tighten with a suffocating ache.

The pain in my wrist grew worse and worse until I finally couldn't hold on any longer, and the reflector slipped from my hands.

Everyone's eyes fell on me.

Kristy hurried over. Without so much as checking on my wrist, she picked up the reflector from the floor first.

"What's going on? Can we finish the shoot or not?"

I looked at her, swallowing the dull pain shooting through my wrist.

"My wrist hurts."

Only then did she notice my slightly swollen wrist. Her brows furrowed even tighter.

"How could you be so careless?"

There was no concern in her voice. Only blame.

"Can you still finish the photos in time for the account's next posting schedule?" she asked.

In that instance, my heart went completely dead. Her thoughtfulness was reserved for someone else, and her memory was purely selective.

I shook my head and slowly got to my feet.

"I can't shoot anymore."

With that, I turned and walked toward the equipment area without sparing her another glance.

The phone in my pocket buzzed. It was a message from the residency program team.

"Mr. Cox, due to weather conditions, your overnight train originally scheduled for seven days from now has been moved up to tomorrow night. Please prepare accordingly."

Might as well.

I walked over to the worktable, took off the wrist brace I'd worn for three years, and gently set it down.

Kristy had personally put it on me all those years ago. And now, I was giving it back.

The photographer handed the raw files over to Kristy for approval. In the photos, her family and Victor were smiling radiantly.

Only in the reflection of a pane of glass in the corner was there a blurry figure, almost impossible to make out.

That was me.

Adam's POVOne year later, my solo restoration exhibition, "The Absentee", opened at Orvale's premier art center. The exhibition's main promotional image was a self-portrait I'd restored from my reflection in the glass of that family photo.I was expressionless in that photo. I simply looked calmly beyond the lens.On opening day, Kristy showed up.She booked a ticket online like any other visitor and entered with the rest of the crowd. She quietly made her way through the exhibit, then wrote a single line in the guest book."Congratulations on finding yourself."She left right after writing that. She didn't stay to say anything else.I thought that would be our final interaction that year. That was until the final night of the exhibition. A heavy downpour fell over Orvale that night. When I carried the last batch of archived materials out through the back entrance, getting ready to head back to the studio, I found her standing right under the streetlamp in the parking lot

Adam's POVAfter that, Kristy never came looking for me again. However, I could still see traces of her online.First, that pet account of hers, which had millions of followers, posted a lengthy statement. She didn't delete the videos of Victor and her behaving like a couple but instead left them up as evidence. In the statement, she laid out the entire timeline of our relationship alongside her working timeline with Victor. She publicly admitted that she had not only allowed the public to mistake her and Victor for a couple, but had even actively encouraged that perception. She confessed to selectively sharing what suited her and holding herself to a double standard. She didn't push any blame onto Victor, nor did she blame her fans for reading too much into things. She took full responsibility herself.Right after that, she terminated all commercial partnerships that had relied on their couple dynamic as a selling point. In accordance with the contracts, she refunded the funds

Adam's POVOver the next few months, Kristy came back twice. The first time, she brought over a batch of old photographs needed for the restoration exhibition. The other time, she made up an excuse, saying she wanted to check on the exhibition feedback.I knew what she really wanted to talk about had nothing to do with the exhibition. That day, she sat in front of the workbench for a long time while I sorted through rolls of film. Eventually, she pushed an external hard drive toward me."These are all the pictures I've taken of you over the past three years."Her eyes were slightly red, and her voice trembled badly."I thought keeping these for my own private collection was what love was."With shaking hands, she pulled out her phone and opened one of the backed-up photos. It was a picture of me, head bowed as I helped her wipe her camera lens. The warm golden light of sunset fell across the side of my face, creating an incredibly tender composition."This is you helping me w

Adam's POVEight months passed in the blink of an eye, and my life in Orvale settled into a comfortable routine.Restoring old film was work that required immense patience and focus. I immersed myself in it and barely kept in touch with anyone outside of work.I became the lead on the restoration project, overseeing a small team. I even made a few new friends who shared my interests. On weekends, we'd go hiking, hunt for new restaurants, or catch whatever new movie that had just come out.My life no longer revolved solely around Kristy Simpson.I thought life would just carry on like this, with each of us living our own lives in peace. That was, until the day the exhibition featuring the restored film I'd worked on opened at the Orvale Art Museum. After the exhibition ended, a familiar yet almost unfamiliar figure appeared at the entrance to the gallery. It was Kristy. She'd lost a lot of weight, and she was much quieter, too. The pride that had once defined her had now been r

Third-Person POVIn the empty house, Kristy's phone started ringing again. It was her mother."Kristy, it's just as well that the wedding is canceled. Adam is far too quiet and reserved. He's not a good fit for our family."There was no disappointment in Susanne's voice. If anything, she sounded relieved.Susanne continued, "Besides, Victor is a great guy. He's outgoing and cheerful, and you two get along so well. I invited him over for dinner tonight, so come home early."Kristy gripped her phone tightly. For the first time, she found herself resisting her mother's plans."Mom, stop making random matches.""How is that random?" Susanne demanded, her voice rising. "Victor has been shooting videos with you for three years. And look how natural you two looked when he stood next to you in our family photos! The whole internet says you two were made for each other. How can they all be wrong?"Kristy couldn't refute her because everything she said was true.Right after she hung up,

Third-Person POVKristy was on her way to the wedding planning agency when she got the first phone call.It was from her best friend, who was also her maid of honor."Kristy, what on earth is going on with you and Adam? Why'd you suddenly cancel the wedding? I've got friends and relatives blowing up my phone asking me what happened!"Kristy tightened her grip on the steering wheel. She asked, "He was the one who sent it?""Obviously! It went out to everyone! Did you do something to hurt him?"Kristy hung up, her expression dark. She was convinced Adam was just throwing a tantrum, and this was nothing but a childish stunt. But when she arrived at the wedding planning agency and saw the place completely empty of any of their wedding paraphernalia, she finally realized something was wrong. The photography display that was supposed to be filled with photos of the two of them was completely blank, and all the shuttles reserved for their guests had been canceled as well. The weddin
