Chapter 4

Author: Sweet Arsenic
Adam's POV

On my last day before leaving, I calmly wrapped up every single handover.

The file box had already been picked up by the shipping company and sent to Orvale. A photo of the keys to the residency housing had also been sent to my new phone.

Just like the average traveler leaving after a business trip, I erased every last trace of myself from the place.

When Kristy came home, I was deleting the very last file from the computer. It was the wedding intro video that didn't have a single face in it, only landscapes.

Noticing my swollen wrist, she instinctively grabbed ointment and an old brace from the medical kit, then applied it for me with practiced ease.

That fleeting moment of tenderness almost made me pause. Maybe she still cared about me deep down.

But the next words out of her mouth dragged me right back to reality.

"Is your wrist feeling better now?" she asked. "If it is, go and tweak the wedding video a little more. I think the color grading is too cold."

She still believed that the wedding would happen as planned.

I looked at her and asked one last question.

"Kristy, have you ever considered that maybe I don't want things to continue like this?"

She looked at me as if she'd just heard the funniest joke. "You don't want to? Adam Cox, aren't you done with your tantrum yet?"

She walked right up to me, a mocking smile on her face.

"Didn't you delete the photos from the wedding display and skip out on the family portrait just so you could force me to go public with us? Well, let me tell you something. I hate being threatened."

As it turned out, my silence and compromises had been nothing more than a tantrum in her eyes.

I smiled, not bothering to explain anymore.

Just then, her phone started ringing. It was the person in charge of the animal welfare center, calling in a panic.

"Kristy! It's bad! A piece of equipment fell from high up while Victor was livestreaming, and he got hit while trying to protect the cats!"

Kristy's expression changed instantly. She grabbed her coat and bolted out the door without even glancing at me. She didn't even remember that we had to finalize our wedding program that afternoon.

Once again, she was absent because of Victor.

I didn't go after her. Instead, I clicked on that familiar livestream link.

The feed was shaking badly, and the scene was in chaos. Yet, I still saw everything clearly.

Kristy rushed into the frame and pulled Victor tightly against her, using her own back to shield him from anything else that might fall.

She kept checking him over again and again, her voice trembling with a panic I'd never heard before.

"Are you okay? Where are you hurt?"

Even after confirming that Victor had only been startled, she still didn't let go of him. Instead, right in front of tens of thousands of viewers, she pulled him into a long, lingering embrace.

Someone on set wanted to cut the stream, but she stopped them.

"Don't turn it off. Keep streaming. We don't want this to affect the account's numbers."

Three years ago, for the sake of "keeping a low profile", she'd forced me to delete a photo of us right in the middle of the street. Three years later, for the sake of another man's account metrics, she willingly chose to broadcast herself shielding him for the entire world to see.

She didn't hate being on camera. She just hated having me in the frame.

The live chat had already gone wild.

"My goodness! Kristy's a total badass!"

"This couple is the real deal! This definitely isn't staged!"

"Kristy and Victor have to stay together forever!"

I slowly scrolled through the messages of support and congratulations and gave one of them a like. Then, I closed the livestream, deactivated my old number, walked to the entryway, and gently placed my access card on the shoe cabinet.

Goodbye, Kristy.

I closed the door—the one I'd never walk through again.

…

The night was pitch black when I stood alone on the platform for the overnight train.

The moment I boarded the carriage, I used my new number to send out a mass notification to all our wedding guests, informing them the wedding was canceled.

The train slowly pulled away. The neon lights of the city rapidly receded into a blurry haze behind me.

At the same time, Kristy had just finished calming Victor down and was about to call me, demanding an explanation, when she received a final confirmation message from the wedding planner.

"Dear Ms. Simpson, as requested by Mr. Adam Cox seven days ago, all arrangements for your wedding to Mr. Cox have been unilaterally canceled. Notifications to the wedding guests have just been sent out."

Outside the window, the world was completely dark. Only the lights inside the train illuminated my calm face.

While Kristy was frantic with worry over another man, she'd permanently lost her groom.

Adam's POVOne year later, my solo restoration exhibition, "The Absentee", opened at Orvale's premier art center. The exhibition's main promotional image was a self-portrait I'd restored from my reflection in the glass of that family photo.I was expressionless in that photo. I simply looked calmly beyond the lens.On opening day, Kristy showed up.She booked a ticket online like any other visitor and entered with the rest of the crowd. She quietly made her way through the exhibit, then wrote a single line in the guest book."Congratulations on finding yourself."She left right after writing that. She didn't stay to say anything else.I thought that would be our final interaction that year. That was until the final night of the exhibition. A heavy downpour fell over Orvale that night. When I carried the last batch of archived materials out through the back entrance, getting ready to head back to the studio, I found her standing right under the streetlamp in the parking lot

Adam's POVAfter that, Kristy never came looking for me again. However, I could still see traces of her online.First, that pet account of hers, which had millions of followers, posted a lengthy statement. She didn't delete the videos of Victor and her behaving like a couple but instead left them up as evidence. In the statement, she laid out the entire timeline of our relationship alongside her working timeline with Victor. She publicly admitted that she had not only allowed the public to mistake her and Victor for a couple, but had even actively encouraged that perception. She confessed to selectively sharing what suited her and holding herself to a double standard. She didn't push any blame onto Victor, nor did she blame her fans for reading too much into things. She took full responsibility herself.Right after that, she terminated all commercial partnerships that had relied on their couple dynamic as a selling point. In accordance with the contracts, she refunded the funds

Adam's POVOver the next few months, Kristy came back twice. The first time, she brought over a batch of old photographs needed for the restoration exhibition. The other time, she made up an excuse, saying she wanted to check on the exhibition feedback.I knew what she really wanted to talk about had nothing to do with the exhibition. That day, she sat in front of the workbench for a long time while I sorted through rolls of film. Eventually, she pushed an external hard drive toward me."These are all the pictures I've taken of you over the past three years."Her eyes were slightly red, and her voice trembled badly."I thought keeping these for my own private collection was what love was."With shaking hands, she pulled out her phone and opened one of the backed-up photos. It was a picture of me, head bowed as I helped her wipe her camera lens. The warm golden light of sunset fell across the side of my face, creating an incredibly tender composition."This is you helping me w

Adam's POVEight months passed in the blink of an eye, and my life in Orvale settled into a comfortable routine.Restoring old film was work that required immense patience and focus. I immersed myself in it and barely kept in touch with anyone outside of work.I became the lead on the restoration project, overseeing a small team. I even made a few new friends who shared my interests. On weekends, we'd go hiking, hunt for new restaurants, or catch whatever new movie that had just come out.My life no longer revolved solely around Kristy Simpson.I thought life would just carry on like this, with each of us living our own lives in peace. That was, until the day the exhibition featuring the restored film I'd worked on opened at the Orvale Art Museum. After the exhibition ended, a familiar yet almost unfamiliar figure appeared at the entrance to the gallery. It was Kristy. She'd lost a lot of weight, and she was much quieter, too. The pride that had once defined her had now been r

Third-Person POVIn the empty house, Kristy's phone started ringing again. It was her mother."Kristy, it's just as well that the wedding is canceled. Adam is far too quiet and reserved. He's not a good fit for our family."There was no disappointment in Susanne's voice. If anything, she sounded relieved.Susanne continued, "Besides, Victor is a great guy. He's outgoing and cheerful, and you two get along so well. I invited him over for dinner tonight, so come home early."Kristy gripped her phone tightly. For the first time, she found herself resisting her mother's plans."Mom, stop making random matches.""How is that random?" Susanne demanded, her voice rising. "Victor has been shooting videos with you for three years. And look how natural you two looked when he stood next to you in our family photos! The whole internet says you two were made for each other. How can they all be wrong?"Kristy couldn't refute her because everything she said was true.Right after she hung up,

Third-Person POVKristy was on her way to the wedding planning agency when she got the first phone call.It was from her best friend, who was also her maid of honor."Kristy, what on earth is going on with you and Adam? Why'd you suddenly cancel the wedding? I've got friends and relatives blowing up my phone asking me what happened!"Kristy tightened her grip on the steering wheel. She asked, "He was the one who sent it?""Obviously! It went out to everyone! Did you do something to hurt him?"Kristy hung up, her expression dark. She was convinced Adam was just throwing a tantrum, and this was nothing but a childish stunt. But when she arrived at the wedding planning agency and saw the place completely empty of any of their wedding paraphernalia, she finally realized something was wrong. The photography display that was supposed to be filled with photos of the two of them was completely blank, and all the shuttles reserved for their guests had been canceled as well. The weddin
