Chapter 2 Less Than a Dream

Autor: Midnight Visitor
The next morning, I woke up in pain.

The grief and shock had triggered a severe stomach spasm. I curled into myself on the bed, shaking as cold sweat soaked through my pajamas.

I struggled to reach for the phone on my nightstand, but I did not even have the strength to lift my hand.

Just as my vision began to blur, the bedroom door opened.

Eric entered with breakfast. When he saw me, his face changed, and he rushed to my side. "Aimee! What's wrong?"

He called the family doctor immediately.

After a long stretch of chaos, the pain finally eased. I lay weakly in bed with an IV in my arm while Eric sat beside me, dipping a cotton swab in water to moisten my cracked lips.

His eyes were full of worry and guilt.

"This is my fault," he murmured. "I should have noticed sooner that you weren't feeling well."

Looking at his concern, I found it deeply ironic. 'If it isn't for you, Eric, how could I end up like this?'

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the caller ID, and the heaviness on his face softened almost instantly. He stood and walked to the balcony to take the call.

Even through the glass door, Isabelle's sweet, fragile voice came through clearly. "Eric, I had a nightmare last night. My chest feels so tight now. Can you come stay with me for a while?"

I watched Eric's body tense immediately. His voice was filled with obvious concern as he asked, "You had a nightmare? Are you feeling pain anywhere? Wait for me. I'll come over right now."

After hanging up, he came back into the room and picked up the suit jacket draped over the chair.

As he put it on, he spoke without really looking at me. "Aimee, something came up at the office. I need to go handle it."

Then he added, "Rest well. Call me if you need anything."

I looked at him.

My hand tightened around the sheet, and the IV needle shifted under my skin. A thin line of blood crept back into the tube, and sharp pain spread from the puncture point.

"I…" My voice came out terribly hoarse, but Eric had already reached the door.

He did not stop.

He only glanced back and gave me a distracted, gentle warning. "Be good. Listen to the doctor."

Then the door closed.

The room fell silent again, with only the slow drip of fluid from the IV bag filling the air.

Isabelle only had a nightmare, and Eric treated it like an emergency. He rushed to her side without hesitation.

However, as his fiancee who had just "lost" both parents and was bedridden from illness, I was not even as significant as one of her dreams.

That afternoon, I pulled out the IV needle, changed my clothes, and prepared to go to my small art restoration studio.

Some old paintings were waiting for me there.

They were the only things that could help me forget the pain, even for a little while.

Yet just as I walked downstairs, I saw a pink sports car parked outside.

Isabelle stepped out, followed by several wealthy young women from her circle.

When she saw me, her face filled with surprise and concern. "Aimee," she called gently, "why do you look so pale?"

Then she smiled. "Eric told me you were sick, so I came to check on you."

A short-haired woman standing behind her let out a mocking laugh. "Isabelle, you're too kind. Why bother visiting an orphan who cursed her own parents to death?"

Another woman immediately chimed in, "Exactly. If she hadn't been clinging to Mr. Terrell so shamelessly, he would have been with you a long time ago."

Her eyes swept over me with disgust. "What a pathetic, shameless woman."

Their words stabbed into me like knives.

In the past, I would have endured it all for Eric's sake.

But now that I knew the truth, every word sounded like a mockery of how foolish I had been.

I clenched my fists until my nails dug deep into my palms.

"Shut up."

My voice was cold, without a trace of warmth.

Margaret stepped forward and moved in front of me, shielding me with quiet resolve. "Mr. Terrell," she told him, "the Hart family appreciates your efforts in helping us reunite with our daughter again." Then her expression grew cold. "The harm you caused her is unforgivable. From now on, do not show yourself to her again." Meanwhile, Richard moved beside her and placed a hand on Elliot's shoulder. His eyes shone with warmth and approval. "Elliot, Aimee is in your care now." Elliot nodded without hesitation. "Mr. and Mrs. Hart, you have my word. I'll love her and protect her for the rest of my life." Eric stood there, looking at the warmth around me and the way I leaned naturally toward Elliot. Only then did he seem to understand that he had lost me completely. He had wanted to make amends, but it was far too late. He no longer had the right to ask for forgiveness. He was the one who had pushed me away with his own hands, and in the end, he had pushed me into the arms of

Eric staggered slightly, as if the blow was too much for him to take. "Aimee…" "Are you done?" I asked, looking at him with cold eyes. "If you are, please leave. You're interrupting my work." "No! I'm not." He suddenly became agitated and stepped forward, grabbing my shoulders. "Aimee, I found something else. Isabelle isn't actually the Hart family's daughter." I frowned. "She was switched at birth," he said quickly. "You are the Harts' real daughter." His voice shook as he continued, "Isabelle's biological parents are just ordinary working-class people. She knew the truth all along, but she hid it from everyone and enjoyed everything that should have belonged to you." Eric's voice was filled with regret and anger. "She used me. She used my guilt toward her to push you away." So that was the truth. A switched-at-birth mistake, followed by a calculated lie. I asked calmly, "So? Are you saying that everything you did back then was because she misled you? Are you trying

"I finally found you," Eric said hoarsely. He reached for my hand, but Elliot stepped forward and blocked him. "Sir," Elliot said politely, though his tone was distant, "can I help you?" Only then did Eric look at him. The moment he noticed how familiar we seemed with each other—and the bouquet Elliot had given me—his eyes darkened with jealousy. "Who are you?" Eric snapped. "Get out of my way." I stepped out from behind Elliot and looked at Eric calmly. "I don't know you." Those four simple words struck Eric like a knife. He stared at me in disbelief. "Aimee, what did you just say?" Then he forced a strained smile. "Don't joke with me. Come home with me, okay?" "Home?" I repeated, letting out a faint, mocking laugh. "Which home? The one where you locked me in a room and left me to die because another woman was scared of thunder?" His whole body trembled, as if those words had drained the strength from him. "I'm sorry, Aimee," he said quickly. "I know I was wron

Eric did not think of me until a week later. When he finally returned to the villa and opened the door, he found the house in complete disarray. The damage had been left behind by the firefighters who broke in to save me. An uneasy feeling rose in his chest. He rushed upstairs and found the bedroom empty. The bed was so neatly made that it looked as if I had never slept in it at all. Then he called me like a madman. All he heard was the cold, automated message telling him my phone was turned off. Only then did Eric realize that something might have happened to me. He used every connection he had to search for me. In the end, he found my name in the hospital records. When he saw the words acute throat swelling and critical condition on the diagnosis report, he felt as if he had been struck by lightning. He had almost killed me. That realization froze the blood in his veins. Eric rushed to the hospital, only to learn that I had been discharged three days earlier.

After Elliot left, I lay in the hospital bed and stared blankly at the ceiling. The love inside me had already been reduced to ruins, and now even the last ember had been drowned in cold water. I did not tell Eric I was in the hospital. I did not contact anyone either. Three days later, I discharged myself. I sold every valuable painting and tool in my studio and exchanged them for enough money to leave. Before I left the city for good, I still did one foolish thing. I could not stop myself from holding on to that last, pathetic thread of hope. I wanted to see my biological parents with my own eyes, the parents Eric had secretly sent out of the country. I did not know where he had sent them, but I knew Isabelle would. Using a new number, I pretended to be contacting her on Eric's behalf. I told her there were urgent documents the Harts needed to sign, and she gave me the address of the private care facility where they were staying. I bought a ticket for the earliest f

Eric stared at me, clearly caught off guard by my words. "Aimee, you never used to be like this." I laughed and asked, "Then what did I used to be like? A fool who would come running whenever you showed me the smallest bit of tenderness?" His face darkened instantly. "Aimee, stop being unreasonable." Just then, the room suddenly spun around me. A terrifying tightness rose in my throat, and my breathing became painfully difficult. I clutched my neck as my face quickly flushed red. "Aimee!" Eric's expression changed, and he rushed over to catch me. "What's wrong?" With great effort, I pointed toward the plate of mango mousse on the dining table and forced out, "Mango... I'm allergic." Eric froze. Then realization struck him. I had been severely allergic to mango since childhood, and I nearly died once after accidentally eating it. That mango mousse was from Isabelle's favorite dessert shop. He brought it back especially for her and casually brought one home for me as
