Se connecterThe last hope I had of finding my parents was destroyed right in front of me. I had just arrived at the meeting place when they were hit by a car and killed before my eyes. By the time I returned home, I was numb. Then I heard a voice coming from the entryway. It was Eric Terrell, speaking to one of his trusted men on the phone. "First, it was the fake DNA report," the man said. "Now it's a staged car accident." He gave a low laugh. "Mr. Terrell, you've really gone to great lengths to stop Aimee Walters from finding her family." I curled up on the couch, and for a moment, I felt as if I had forgotten how to breathe. Eric took off his coat. His voice sounded tired, but there was no hesitation in it. "This is the last time. Aimee will never find her biological parents now." His man sighed. "Why go this far? Even if Ms. Walters reunites with the Hart family, it wouldn't really threaten Ms. Hart's place..." "No," Eric cut him off, his voice cold and firm. "If Aimee returns to the Hart family and wins back Mr. and Mrs. Hart's love, Isabelle will be the one who gets hurt." Then he added, "That's why I had no choice but to arrange for Mr. and Mrs. Hart to fake their deaths in front of her. In three days, they'll leave the country and never come back." My blood ran cold. Eric continued, as if my entire life were nothing more than a problem he had already solved. "As for Aimee, I've already agreed to marry her." The man sounded surprised. "Then what about Ms. Hart?" Eric fell silent for a long moment. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and defeated. "As long as she's happy, that's enough for me."
Voir plusMargaret stepped forward and moved in front of me, shielding me with quiet resolve. "Mr. Terrell," she told him, "the Hart family appreciates your efforts in helping us reunite with our daughter again." Then her expression grew cold. "The harm you caused her is unforgivable. From now on, do not show yourself to her again." Meanwhile, Richard moved beside her and placed a hand on Elliot's shoulder. His eyes shone with warmth and approval. "Elliot, Aimee is in your care now." Elliot nodded without hesitation. "Mr. and Mrs. Hart, you have my word. I'll love her and protect her for the rest of my life." Eric stood there, looking at the warmth around me and the way I leaned naturally toward Elliot. Only then did he seem to understand that he had lost me completely. He had wanted to make amends, but it was far too late. He no longer had the right to ask for forgiveness. He was the one who had pushed me away with his own hands, and in the end, he had pushed me into the arms of
Eric staggered slightly, as if the blow was too much for him to take. "Aimee…" "Are you done?" I asked, looking at him with cold eyes. "If you are, please leave. You're interrupting my work." "No! I'm not." He suddenly became agitated and stepped forward, grabbing my shoulders. "Aimee, I found something else. Isabelle isn't actually the Hart family's daughter." I frowned. "She was switched at birth," he said quickly. "You are the Harts' real daughter." His voice shook as he continued, "Isabelle's biological parents are just ordinary working-class people. She knew the truth all along, but she hid it from everyone and enjoyed everything that should have belonged to you." Eric's voice was filled with regret and anger. "She used me. She used my guilt toward her to push you away." So that was the truth. A switched-at-birth mistake, followed by a calculated lie. I asked calmly, "So? Are you saying that everything you did back then was because she misled you? Are you trying
"I finally found you," Eric said hoarsely. He reached for my hand, but Elliot stepped forward and blocked him. "Sir," Elliot said politely, though his tone was distant, "can I help you?" Only then did Eric look at him. The moment he noticed how familiar we seemed with each other—and the bouquet Elliot had given me—his eyes darkened with jealousy. "Who are you?" Eric snapped. "Get out of my way." I stepped out from behind Elliot and looked at Eric calmly. "I don't know you." Those four simple words struck Eric like a knife. He stared at me in disbelief. "Aimee, what did you just say?" Then he forced a strained smile. "Don't joke with me. Come home with me, okay?" "Home?" I repeated, letting out a faint, mocking laugh. "Which home? The one where you locked me in a room and left me to die because another woman was scared of thunder?" His whole body trembled, as if those words had drained the strength from him. "I'm sorry, Aimee," he said quickly. "I know I was wron
Eric did not think of me until a week later. When he finally returned to the villa and opened the door, he found the house in complete disarray. The damage had been left behind by the firefighters who broke in to save me. An uneasy feeling rose in his chest. He rushed upstairs and found the bedroom empty. The bed was so neatly made that it looked as if I had never slept in it at all. Then he called me like a madman. All he heard was the cold, automated message telling him my phone was turned off. Only then did Eric realize that something might have happened to me. He used every connection he had to search for me. In the end, he found my name in the hospital records. When he saw the words acute throat swelling and critical condition on the diagnosis report, he felt as if he had been struck by lightning. He had almost killed me. That realization froze the blood in his veins. Eric rushed to the hospital, only to learn that I had been discharged three days earlier.
