Chapter 1

Matthew's POV

When our eyes met, a flicker of surprise crossed my wife Janice Hyde's face, but it quickly disappeared as she regained her composure.

She glanced briefly at our son, Timmy Powell, frowning slightly at his tear-streaked face.

"Did you not take a cab here? How could you be so stingy like this?"

She then lifted her chin slightly and said to her assistant, "Nicole, get him into a cab. I just remembered that I have a project to inspect today and I can't give him a ride after all."

I was so stunned that my mind had gone blank. I'd just thought of questioning her when her assistant, Nicole Torres, practically dragged me out of the car and into another.

The cab door had only just closed when I received a text message from Janice.

"Go home first. I'll explain later."

The last message I'd received from her was just last night, when she'd lovingly texted, "I miss you so much, honey. Working overtime is so tough. I wish I could just come home and cuddle with you."

I shakily replied, "How could you do this to me and Timmy, Janice?"

However, the message only had one gray tick, whilst the rest of her messages had two blue ticks. I knew then that she'd blocked my number.

I refused to give up and tried calling her, but just as I expected, I was only met with the cold robotic voice telling me that her number couldn't be reached.

My breathing quickened as my chest heaved. Just then, my phone screen lit up again. This time, it was a notification from a well-known stay-at-home dad influencer, Saul Hickman, who'd just posted on his X account.

The image he posted was that of me, thanking him with a grateful expression on my face as I held Timmy's new secondhand stroller at his front porch.

His caption read, "I was bored at home and started decluttering, and unexpectedly helped out a struggling dad. His child wasn't doing well either.

"I don't know if his mother cruelly abandoned him or if something bad happened to her. But anyway, we're both stay-at-home dads, and I'm so thankful to my wonderful wife for providing me with such a comfortable life.

"I would never have realized just how blessed I was had I not seen another dad struggling even more than I was.

"I promise that I will continue doing my best in the future to help out more struggling parents."

The comments in the comments section below the post were full of praise and encouraging words for his kindness.

And yet, there were also a handful of people there criticizing me for forcing my wife to give birth despite being so poor, suggesting that I might even have trapped my wife in the marriage by getting her pregnant and blaming me for the child's suffering.

I got so mad that my chest wouldn't stop heaving. I scrolled through his posts with trembling fingers.

While my wife told me she was busy working overtime at the company during Christmas for triple pay, she was actually on vacation in Herwaii with Saul and their daughter.

And at that time, I had tried to ease her burdens by taking up DoorDash orders and working well into the night on Christmas Day, with Timmy on my back.

However, I got knocked over by a motorcycle and hit my head on the asphalt while protecting Timmy. Then, I went to the hospital by myself without telling Janice lest she worry about me.

Once, when gold prices soared to an all-time high, Saul showed his collection of gold bars and ingots at home, spread out all over the bed.

The caption read, "I'm so lucky to have such a compassionate and understanding wife. When I saw that gold prices had soared, I went behind her back and bought all these gold bars without her knowing. But the prices dropped as soon as I got them.

"Yet, she didn't chide me when she found out about it and just praised me for being so far-sighted and thinking on behalf of the family's future."

As for me, I had correctly predicted the rise of gold prices and talked to Janice about taking out some of our savings to buy some gold before the rush. Yet, she yelled at me and said, "And where did you get that fake information from? Some sort of shady finance guru again?

"Can't you be more considerate of me for once, Matthew Powell? I'm stressed out and tired enough from working overtime at the office all day. Will you just stop reading those stupid get-rich-quick schemes from rubbish books and quit dreaming of striking it rich all the time?"

I continued scrolling. There were photos of Janice breastfeeding, but with her back to the camera. Saul's caption was also a gloating one.

"I heard that women nowadays are afraid of pain and refuse to breastfeed their babies, but my wife insisted on breastfeeding our daughter even though it hurts so much that it drives her to tears at times.

"It's all because she believes that babies who aren't breastfed will suffer from illnesses and immunity problems, and she doesn't want our precious daughter to risk anything."

I suddenly tasted something metallic in my mouth. It wasn't until then that I realized I'd gritted my teeth so hard that my gums were beginning to bleed.

After giving birth to Timmy, Janice absolutely refused to breastfeed him. She gave the excuse that she was tired from working all day, and if she were to breastfeed him again, it would be akin to Timmy sucking all the life out of her. She even blamed me for not being considerate of her.

However, her take-home pay and my measly DoorDash tips just weren't enough for us to afford any proper formula for Timmy. I had no choice but to buy the cheapest brand from the dollar store and add a little more water to it than necessary to stretch it out.

During Timmy's routine check-ups, the pediatrician said that Timmy was severely malnourished and showed signs of developmental delays.

Upon hearing this, Janice broke down in tears and hugged me tightly, swearing that she would make it up to me and Timmy after she'd managed to earn enough money for the family.

However, I never imagined that she would just end up learning how to care for another man's daughter from my son's suffering.

In despair, I picked up my phone and sent a text message to a number that I hadn't contacted in a very, very long time.

"Does your previous promise still stand?"

Matthew's POVI hadn't seen Janice in almost a month. And yet, she looked so haggard that I nearly failed to recognize her until she came closer to us.In those years she had pretended to be poor, I always made sure to iron out every wrinkle in her shirts and dresses, and she also never stopped using her makeup and skincare products. However, she looked even more pitiful and haggard now than back then. The moment she saw me, she came up to me with disbelief written in her eyes."Matthew? Is that you? I've been waiting for you for so long! You've finally come back!"Her eyes welled up with tears at once."I was wrong, Matthew. I let you and Timmy down. But I've thought it all through now, and I've realized that nothing is more important to me than you and Timmy!"Did you know that I tore Saul's mask off and exposed him all for your sake? Now, Mom and Dad aren't forcing me to marry him anymore."He got custody of the girl, and I've also aborted his second baby. Timmy is the only

Matthew's POVI cried my heart out that night. I probably cried more than I ever did in my life and didn't stop until my tears went completely dry.Even though Becky and Janice both faced pressure from their parents, Janice had chosen to betray me, while Becky had chosen to stay with me.I'd made the wrong choice once. But I didn't know if I still had the strength to choose again. After all, I was a father to Timmy now, and I didn't dare to risk it. Yet, Becky didn't pressure me or force me to make a choice."It's fine if you don't have any feelings for me, Matthew. I'm only helping you because I want to."I felt more at ease staying with her after she said that to me.Every time I woke up in the middle of the night, plagued by nightmares, Becky would somehow hear me and come knocking at my door. She'd then keep me company and try to cheer me up with funny jokes and childhood anecdotes to distract me.She even brought in a child psychologist to provide counseling for Timmy."Ev

Third-Person POVShortly afterward, Nicole arrived at the nearby coffee shop with a stack of documents and handed them over to Janice."Ms. Hyde, it seems that there were no other victims found in the fire other than the two kidnappers," she reported. "Mr. Powell and his son are most probably alright. It's just that there are no CCTV cameras nearby since it's been abandoned for a long time, so nobody knows where they are."We've searched everywhere, but we couldn't find a clue. There are also no other marks or footprints leading outside."Meanwhile, nobody has returned to Mr. Powell's apartment ever since. His personal belongings and official documents are still inside."I even checked all of the train stations, docks, airports, and other means of transport, and there are still no traces of Mr. Powell and his son whatsoever."People can't just disappear without a trace. Come to think of it, that explosion was also quite suspicious. Although the firefighters later confirmed that t

Third-Person POVThe firefighters noticed Janice's unusual behavior and quickly went up to her to support her."I'm not going outside!" she suddenly exclaimed. "My husband and son are still waiting for me! I can't leave without them this time!"She then staggered over to the two charred bodies in the corner. The moment she had a closer look at the sizes, she heaved a sigh of relief."It's not Matthew or Timmy! I knew they would be alright," she said. "Maybe they've just fainted in another corner. Hurry up and find them! And search the outside perimeter of the warehouse too! What if they were pushed outside from the force of the shockwave earlier?"They'd definitely be hurt if they fell out of the window from this height! Please hurry up and find them! My son isn't even two years old yet! It's only going to be more dangerous for them the longer we drag this out!"The firefighters quickly went back to work after hearing that there was also a child involved."Madam, do you know the

Third-Person POVThe video showed Matthew and Saul being kidnapped. Janice's face turned grim at once as she went all the way to the address the kidnappers specified with Nicole."I've brought the ten million dollars you wanted! Now, release my husband and my child!"The leader of the kidnappers laughed out loud."Oh, Ms. Hyde, don't think we don't know that you have two husbands and two kids. See, we didn't know which one you liked better, so we brought both of them with us."I guess we weren't specific enough in our message to you. You can only save one of them with ten million dollars."It's fine if you only want to save one of them, though. We'll just assume you don't want the other anymore and throw him to the pigs."Janice's face drained of all color at once."I only have ten million dollars available right now…""If you want to save both of them, you have two hours to take one home and grab another ten million for the other," the first kidnapper said. "But if we get tir

Matthew's POVI suppressed my anger and painstakingly recounted, word by word, the entire process of how Janice and I met and got married, in the comments section. The memories that once brought a smile to my face now felt like sharp knives digging into my chest. The thought that she'd been lying to me the whole time, despite creating these beautiful memories with me, just made me grind my teeth in anger.I'd just typed out the last word and hadn't even managed to press the "post" button when I suddenly realized that my account had been temporarily suspended. Then, I received a text message from Janice."Saul's emotions are unstable right now. Just ignore all the things he's saying on social media. Take it as him just venting his frustrations."After that, I received a notification from my bank app, telling me that I'd just received 100 thousand dollars in my account."The people online will forget about this soon. Just stay at home with Timmy for the time being. My promise stil
