ISLA

~•~

My head was pounding when I woke up. I was lying in a comfortable bed but it didn’t feel like mine. The sheets were black silk and the air was thick with a familiar scent. His familiar scent.

I was in Lorenzo’s room.

I sat up immediately, dragging the sheets to cover my bare chest, while my gaze traveled around, looking for my nightdress.

I found it on the nightstand, neatly folded, next to a jar of water and a pack of tablets. Specifically, the morning-after pill. The gesture felt cold and cynical, just like Lorenzo.

I caught sight of him through the door that led to his balcony with his back to me. He was wearing black dress pants. He was shirtless and his hair was damp as though he had taken a shower not too long ago. He was on his phone, giving commands, discussing shipments casually as though he hadn’t spent the night bending me over his desk.

I was quite ashamed to admit it but I couldn’t even remember how I ended up in his bed. Had I passed out mid-sex? I could faint

LORENZO~•~Isla was reckless. I’d said this a million times. This was why when Ricardo informed me she was currently in the gym, I didn’t hesitate to go find her there. She was pushing herself way too hard. I didn’t know what she was trying to prove or to whom she was trying to prove it to. When I woke up this morning and Ricardo told me he had seen her go into the gym almost two hours ago, I almost punched him. After her training in the evening, all she was supposed to be doing was eating and resting, not pushing herself even more as though she was in a fucking death camp.By the time I reached the entrance of the gym, she was already on the floor. She tried to stand up but her arms were weak as hell and she fell back down. I cursed under my breath and rushed towards her.“Isla!” I called out, hoping she’d respond but her eyes only fluttered open and closed. I doubt she could even see me then. As her body gave out, I placed my hands under her back and knees, raising her with littl

ISLA~•~Sleep evaded me that night. I hated it.His words weighed down on me so that every time I closed my eyes, my mind replayed that conversation. His tone, the way his gaze darkened when he said he wanted me. He hadn’t even hesitated. I had thought anger would burn the memory away but it didn’t. It made it worse. It bothered me.By the time dawn came, I gave up trying to sleep. My head was heavy but my chest was worse. I couldn’t tell the difference between anger, confusion, and attraction anymore. So I did the only thing I could when my thoughts got too loud.I threw on my workout clothes and left my room quietly. The hallways were still dark, so I expected everyone else to be sleeping. I didn’t think I’d run into anyone, but halfway down the stairs, a voice stopped me.“Isla?”Ricardo was standing at the foot of the stairs with his hands in his pockets. His shirt was wrinkled, like he had just gotten up. Now that I knew about his relationship with Greg, I could see some similar

ISLA~•~For a second, I wasn’t sure I heard him right.I stared at him, waiting for him to laugh and take it back. After all, it seemed like all he did was fuck with my head anyway. But he didn’t. He just stood there, his gaze fixed on me, waiting for me to respond to him.“You can’t just say things like that,” I managed to say, my throat suddenly dry.His gaze flicked over my face. “Why not?”I blinked. He wasn’t teasing. He was serious. He came and went as he liked. He said whatever he felt like saying. It annoyed me. “Because you have no right.” I hissed out.I had spent the last few weeks trying to get him out of my head. I had put all my time and focus on training and school. I didn’t leave any space for thoughts about Lorenzo, especially with all the secrets he carried. I was conflicted when it came to him. I didn’t know whether to give in or not. I didn’t know whether to demand the truth or not. Everything about him confused me which was why I stopped thinking about him.He ti

LORENZO~•~I had no intention of avoiding Isla when I came back, but it just happened. She was angry. That much I could tell. I could see it in the way she looked at me whenever we passed each other in the hallways. In the way she ate quickly whenever I was around. I couldn’t even blame her.I’d left without telling her and when she confronted me about it, my words had been harsh. It was only right for her to be mad at me.Besides, her anger was doing her good. In the month I was away, her stamina and core strength had improved. Her stance was great and she had learnt a few reliable strikes. She wasn’t perfect but with the way she was spending all of her time training, it wouldn’t be long before she would be.Even when Lucia wasn’t teaching her, she was practicing on her own. I wanted to interfere, but I wasn’t certain she would even listen to me.Regardless, I found my feet leading me to the training grounds. She wasn’t in her room nor was she in the study. I’d also checked the gym

ISLA~•~In the month Lorenzo was away, I’d made a lot of progress on training. I could throw knives now. My throws weren’t precise but it still stuck to the target. My punch could hurt even if it could easily be blocked and I was just starting to learn how to use guns. Aside from training, I’d been very busy with school. Exams had been tough but without Lorenzo around to distract me, I was almost sure I’d been acing them.It was my final paper and I was feeling pretty good about it. I was tired of school. At first, I looked forward to it because it was the last piece of normalcy I had left but after Lorenzo’s life also bled onto that, I hated the place. I didn’t have any friends. Sophia had completely abandoned me. Ryan said hi to me now and then, but without Sophia there to continue the conversation with him, our talks were very short. He still flirted with me whenever he couldn’t but he couldn’t keep talking to an unresponsive person.I couldn’t even blame him.I had just stepped

  • The Devil you begged for   58. Silence

LORENZO ~•~ The first few days blurred. Work filled up the spaces she used to occupy. There were endless reports, endless calls, and endless files spread across my desk. I went through them one after the other, only stopping to eat or sleep. It worked for a while. Until it didn’t. The house was quiet. Too quiet in my opinion. I’d only brought two men along with me since I never planned to stay this long. I used to like quiet places until I came across Isla who didn’t fail to talk back whenever she could. “Boss,” Romano's voice interrupted my thoughts. I looked up at him. “The container had been cleared. They’re waiting for your approval to send it out.” I nodded, giving him the go-ahead. Romano was able to handle most businesses by himself but he always liked to report to me first. “Double the surveillance when it lands. Nikolai has his eye on my goods.” I’d crossed paths with Nikolai once after Isla’s birthday. He seemed to think I owed him for humiliating his brother. I coul
