ISLA

~•~

The next afternoon, the car rolled to a stop in front of what used to be my house.

I had told myself I needed to see things for myself, but unlike the previous day, my legs felt heavy as I knew no one would stop me from going in this time.

I closed my eyes briefly and took several deep breaths, preparing myself for what was to come when I heard him speak. “If you’re going to sit in the car all day, we might as well start driving back,” he said.

I held my tongue and opened the door immediately. I stepped out slowly, my stomach twisting. The front gate was bent in half, hanging from one hinge. It had been two nights since my house was burnt but the smell still hit my nose.

Behind me, Lorenzo shut his door. He didn’t say anything and just watched me as I walked in with his hands in his coat pockets.

“Stay close,” he finally said after a while of me looking around for possible dangers. His voice wasn’t as sharp as usual but it wasn’t a suggestion either.

I didn’t respond and merely walked further in.

The living room and kitchen took the brunt of the burn, almost as though the fire had started in there. Ashes were everywhere and when I looked closely, I could even see some bone fragments. I covered my mouth immediately, not wanting to puke.

I remembered the exact spots I’d seen my family right before I ran and there were several bones there. Those monsters didn’t just kill them. They also burnt them after their death. They didn’t leave anything for me. I couldn’t give my family a proper burial. All I had were fragments of bones.

My eyes shifted to Lorenzo, watching him watch me. I was gauging his reaction, trying to see if I could tell if he was responsible for this or not. His last name had been mentioned that night, but honestly, he wasn’t the only Russo. It couldn’t be him, right? If it were, he wouldn’t have spared me after I ran straight into his arms. Was I doing the right thing by entrusting my life to him?

He stared at me blankly and I looked away, heading for the stairs. The stairs were fragile and looked like they could give up under my weight but I took the risk to go upstairs. Lorenzo waited until I was upstairs before he started climbing as well.

My room wasn’t burned, but it wasn’t mine either. Drawers had been emptied. Clothes were thrown around. My mattress was upturned. Inside my closet, everything was scattered. My dressing table was broken.

Someone had been in here. I just wasn’t sure if it was that particular night or after.

“People search for valuables after a fire,” Lorenzo stated and I noticed him at the doorway.

I crouched in front of my broken dressing table and tugged at the left bottom drawer since it was the only closed one. It stuck for a while before it finally gave way. I coughed as dust hit my nose, but my eyes immediately sought out a music box.

I reached for the rose-carved box, dusting it. “My dad made this for me when I was seven,” My hands shook as I brushed the dust off.

“A carpenter along with being a mafia boss? Impressive.” His tone was flat, sarcastic, anything but comforting.

“I didn’t expect to see this here,” I whispered to myself, ignoring the man behind me.

“Then you’re lucky you did,” he said, his gaze fixed on my hand. “Keep it close.”

I would keep it close but I hated that he was telling me to keep it close. It wasn’t his business. “It’s just a box–“

“Keep it close,” he repeated before I could finish my sentence. He was so used to giving commands that he couldn’t fathom anyone challenging his orders. I could already tell living with him was going to be hell, but it was the best way to keep myself safe for now.

I stood up and he stepped aside, glancing at his watch. My tongue poked the inside of my cheek. I wasn’t nearly done here yet. Besides, I owed him a favor for this. He couldn’t rush me. “Do you have somewhere to be? Packing my clothes will take some time.”

“These clothes?” He looked around the closet. “Who knows if they’ve been tampered with. None of them is going into my house.”

I frowned. I didn’t have any clothes. I didn’t have any properties. What I was currently wearing belonged to the teenage boy in Lorenzo’s house. “Do you expect me to walk around naked?”

“That’s not a bad idea.” He said with a straight face. “Take what you feel is important. I’ll check them properly before we go home though.” I didn’t like the idea of Lorenzo checking my stuff, but I understood why it was necessary. The man likely had a lot of enemies. “No clothes though. You can get new ones later.”

I nodded once, biting my lips.

“What?”

“Can I get a phone?” He stared at me blankly. “I’ll pay you back when I can access my money,”

He didn’t respond, but he didn’t say no either. I looked for a bag and stuffed some important things in it before Lorenzo started rushing me. As we drove away, I looked back at the house, knowing my life had changed forever,

My parents were gone and I was living under a dictator, who wanted me to take permission from him before I even went out. I wasn’t sure how the rest of my life was going to go, but one thing was for sure, I was going to find who killed my family and I would make them pay with their blood.

I had never been interested in the mafia, but I wouldn’t mind getting involved if it meant avenging their death. I was the last family they had left. I wasn’t alive for nothing.

ISLA~•~It had been, at least, two hours after my confrontation with Lorenzo, but I was still trembling. It was like my world came crashing down on me after he admitted to the killing of my family. I didn’t know if he was brave, stupid, or sick for keeping me under his roof. Wasn’t he scared I’d do something stupid like burning his house down with all of us in it? After I just tried to stab him, he still turned around, not caring that I could attempt to kill him again. He didn’t believe I was a threat and I honestly didn’t blame him. I hated the way my hand trembled around the knife. I hated how easily he subdued me. I hated how much stronger he was than me. I hated him. I didn’t want to see him. My throat was dry but I didn’t move. I couldn’t. Lorenzo was fucking with me. Maybe if I stayed invisible, he would leave me alone. The knock on the door shattered that hope. “Dinner,” one of his men called out from the other side of the door. I didn’t know what his obsession was with ea

LORENZO~•~Before she asked if I killed her family, I already knew she had heard the conversation between me and Romano. She did a pretty bad job at hiding it. Surely she didn’t think dragging her feet through the house and avoiding my eyes would clear her of suspicion, did she? Also, the file that was in front of my office was a dead giveaway. So when she finally asked… “Yes,” I answered simply, watching as her face fell. “It was necessary.”She staggered, leaning against the kitchen counter. The sound of the bottle crashing to the floor was satisfying. I watched her carefully as she shook with rage. Her shoulders were trembling as though my words were pressing on her very bones. In a split second, she turned around, grabbed a knife, and charged at me. She didn’t hesitate. Her hands shook, but her intent was clear. For a moment, I let her hold it, let her believe she could reach me. Not because I wanted to offer myself up to her out of guilt. No. I wanted to see if she’d falter.

ISLA~•~The second week back at school was worse than the first. As usual, the stress of school was beginning to take a toll on me, but that wasn’t all. Every day, I sat through classes with unasked questions in my mind. I felt like everyone was watching me: the students, the lecturers, even Lorenzo’s men, especially Lorenzo’s men. They usually dropped me off at school and disappeared, but I knew they never left the school premises. They were always ready to take me home by the time I was done, even if I never gave them my school schedule.“You’re distracted again,” Sofia leaned in to whisper during one class. Before I could say anything, she continued, “But I understand. You just lost your family. It’s a surprise you’re still able to hold up.”I smiled briefly, not correcting her before I tried to focus on the lesson. Sofia didn’t know anything about the mafia. She didn’t know my parents were involved and she didn’t think I was living with a man who had a loose screw and was keepin

ISLA~•~I knew my enemy but I wasn’t sure what to do about him. If he kept me in his house, it meant he didn’t even think I was a threat. I packed back and forth in my room as the words repeated themselves over and over again in my head. She’s not useful arrived than buried. What did that even mean? What use did he have for me?I pressed my hands over my ears as though I could block them out but they were already rooted deeply in my mind.Had I heard it right? Maybe I misinterpreted him? Maybe it sounded worse than it was. Maybe he wasn’t even talking about me. Surely, millions of other girls lost their families recently and live under Lorenzo’s roof. I would have believed myself if I weren’t the only woman living there amongst, at least, five men. I knew I hadn’t misunderstood. He hadn’t stuttered nor had he faltered. He sounded certain, cold, as though my existence had been reduced to a chess piece that he could use whenever he wanted to. My chest felt tight.I sat on the bed, h

ISLA~•~My first day back at school was stressful. I had so many people asking me why I hadn’t been to school for a while. When I told them the reason, they suddenly became awkward and found an excuse to leave as if I wasn’t the one uncomfortable with telling everyone about my family’s fate. I even had to explain to some professors so they could excuse my absence. Most of them were understanding and offered their condolences. Some told me I could have said something in advance. My friend didn’t let me out of her sight because she ‘didn’t want me to do anything stupid’. It was overwhelming.I almost didn’t want to go again. As the car came to a stop in front of Lorenzo’s house, I was more than happy. I never thought I’d be relieved to be back there.I was out the door before any of Lorenzo’s men could even open theirs. As I headed toward the front door, it suddenly opened, revealing a man in his fifties and a young girl my age. She was smiling too happily for someone who had just been

LORENZO~•~“What’s your deal with the American girl?” Ricardo strolled into my office, not knocking as usual. “I just saw her leaving for school. She isn’t your hostage?”“You’re American yourself, Ric.” I pointed out, just as I started assembling the gun I was busy cleaning. “Also, why would I need to hold her hostage?”“Aren’t you keeping her around because you want something from her?”“And?”“What if she runs away?”I chuckled at his question. Isla had no reason to run away. She didn’t even think she was trapped here for her to think of running. “She won’t. She won’t survive a day outside this mansion if she does.”The day she left and came back in the evening, I found out that she had been chased by low-life thugs who wanted to be part of an organization so badly. She didn’t trust me but she knew I was her safest option. She was taking a risk on her life, betting her life on me. I wasn’t sure whether to call her stupid or brave, but it sure did work out for me.After assembling
