ISLA

~•~

The next afternoon, the car rolled to a stop in front of what used to be my house.

I had told myself I needed to see things for myself, but unlike the previous day, my legs felt heavy as I knew no one would stop me from going in this time.

I closed my eyes briefly and took several deep breaths, preparing myself for what was to come when I heard him speak. “If you’re going to sit in the car all day, we might as well start driving back,” he said.

I held my tongue and opened the door immediately. I stepped out slowly, my stomach twisting. The front gate was bent in half, hanging from one hinge. It had been two nights since my house was burnt but the smell still hit my nose.

Behind me, Lorenzo shut his door. He didn’t say anything and just watched me as I walked in with his hands in his coat pockets.

“Stay close,” he finally said after a while of me looking around for possible dangers. His voice wasn’t as sharp as usual but it wasn’t a suggestion either.

I didn’t respond and merely walked further in.

The living room and kitchen took the brunt of the burn, almost as though the fire had started in there. Ashes were everywhere and when I looked closely, I could even see some bone fragments. I covered my mouth immediately, not wanting to puke.

I remembered the exact spots I’d seen my family right before I ran and there were several bones there. Those monsters didn’t just kill them. They also burnt them after their death. They didn’t leave anything for me. I couldn’t give my family a proper burial. All I had were fragments of bones.

My eyes shifted to Lorenzo, watching him watch me. I was gauging his reaction, trying to see if I could tell if he was responsible for this or not. His last name had been mentioned that night, but honestly, he wasn’t the only Russo. It couldn’t be him, right? If it were, he wouldn’t have spared me after I ran straight into his arms. Was I doing the right thing by entrusting my life to him?

He stared at me blankly and I looked away, heading for the stairs. The stairs were fragile and looked like they could give up under my weight but I took the risk to go upstairs. Lorenzo waited until I was upstairs before he started climbing as well.

My room wasn’t burned, but it wasn’t mine either. Drawers had been emptied. Clothes were thrown around. My mattress was upturned. Inside my closet, everything was scattered. My dressing table was broken.

Someone had been in here. I just wasn’t sure if it was that particular night or after.

“People search for valuables after a fire,” Lorenzo stated and I noticed him at the doorway.

I crouched in front of my broken dressing table and tugged at the left bottom drawer since it was the only closed one. It stuck for a while before it finally gave way. I coughed as dust hit my nose, but my eyes immediately sought out a music box.

I reached for the rose-carved box, dusting it. “My dad made this for me when I was seven,” My hands shook as I brushed the dust off.

“A carpenter along with being a mafia boss? Impressive.” His tone was flat, sarcastic, anything but comforting.

“I didn’t expect to see this here,” I whispered to myself, ignoring the man behind me.

“Then you’re lucky you did,” he said, his gaze fixed on my hand. “Keep it close.”

I would keep it close but I hated that he was telling me to keep it close. It wasn’t his business. “It’s just a box–“

“Keep it close,” he repeated before I could finish my sentence. He was so used to giving commands that he couldn’t fathom anyone challenging his orders. I could already tell living with him was going to be hell, but it was the best way to keep myself safe for now.

I stood up and he stepped aside, glancing at his watch. My tongue poked the inside of my cheek. I wasn’t nearly done here yet. Besides, I owed him a favor for this. He couldn’t rush me. “Do you have somewhere to be? Packing my clothes will take some time.”

“These clothes?” He looked around the closet. “Who knows if they’ve been tampered with. None of them is going into my house.”

I frowned. I didn’t have any clothes. I didn’t have any properties. What I was currently wearing belonged to the teenage boy in Lorenzo’s house. “Do you expect me to walk around naked?”

“That’s not a bad idea.” He said with a straight face. “Take what you feel is important. I’ll check them properly before we go home though.” I didn’t like the idea of Lorenzo checking my stuff, but I understood why it was necessary. The man likely had a lot of enemies. “No clothes though. You can get new ones later.”

I nodded once, biting my lips.

“What?”

“Can I get a phone?” He stared at me blankly. “I’ll pay you back when I can access my money,”

He didn’t respond, but he didn’t say no either. I looked for a bag and stuffed some important things in it before Lorenzo started rushing me. As we drove away, I looked back at the house, knowing my life had changed forever,

My parents were gone and I was living under a dictator, who wanted me to take permission from him before I even went out. I wasn’t sure how the rest of my life was going to go, but one thing was for sure, I was going to find who killed my family and I would make them pay with their blood.

I had never been interested in the mafia, but I wouldn’t mind getting involved if it meant avenging their death. I was the last family they had left. I wasn’t alive for nothing.

ISLA~•~We ended up on a tiny island that I didn’t even know the name of.Lorenzo rented out a villa that came with a private beach.I hadn’t realized how much I needed a vacation till we got there. We spent the first week soaking in the sun, swimming naked at night, and falling asleep on the terrace. We were having so much fun that I barely had time to even take pictures. I’d forgotten my phone even existed. Lorenzo looked happier than I’d ever seen him before. He seemed lighter, like he wasn’t carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders anymore. Then again, he’d been plotting revenge for years and finally killed the person who killed his parents. It wasn’t so odd that he seemed lighter. On the eighth morning, I woke up alone again, but this time, the bed was still warm, indicating he had left not too long ago. There was also a note on his pillow that read, ‘Meet me where the path ends’.I chuckled to myself. Another surprise? He was on a roll these days. I grabbed the first

ISLA~•~Thankfully, Lorenzo didn’t try to go on any more dangerous missions for the next two months. After organizing a funeral for Lucia’s father and the man Lorenzo lost, he decided to rest while Romano tied up all the loose ends. Romano got rid of all the people involved in the Alvario family massacre one after the other. He hadn’t been affected by the massacre since he only knew Lorenzo after he moved out of his adoptive father’s house, but he was so loyal that he took all of Lorenzo’s enemies as his. When Ricardo finally started walking, he wanted to join Romano as his family had been affected by it, but Romano refused since Ricardo still limped when he walked.Ricardo was bitter about it and didn’t speak to Romano for three days. Romano finished his job and apologized to Ricardo knowing the man couldn’t hold a grudge.Lorenzo had offered Lucia and her mother a safe place in case they weren’t comfortable living with him, but they didn’t take the offer. Lucia was happy to be clo

  • The Devil you begged for   112. What next

ISLA~•~When I woke up, I didn’t feel the weight of Lorenzo’s arm around me. I looked at the digital clock by the nightstand. It was exactly midnight and Lorenzo’s side of the bed was cold. Did he come to bed at all?I stood up quickly and exited the room. I didn’t know where I wanted to find him but he was always either in his room or in his office and he wasn’t in the room. The doctor had told him to rest. It was midnight and he still wasn’t in bed. Why the hell was he so stubborn? My steps down the stairs were very quiet. I was about to turn onto the hallway when I saw a faint light coming from the kitchen. I followed it.It led me straight to the man I was looking for and his best friend, except the one in a wheelchair was putting on a new bandage around his chest.I gasped at the sight of the bloodied bandage and both heads turned to me.“What the hell did you do? How did you open your wound?”“See?” Ricardo asked. “She gets me.”Lorenzo kept his eyes on me but didn’t respond a

LORENZO~•~My father opened the door for me when I rang the doorbell. He ran his eyes across my form. “You seem to be doing better, son.”As if he’d know how I was doing the last few weeks. And I wasn’t stupid. I knew he was checking for weapons. He was good at pretending his slow sweep across my body was fatherly concern but I knew betterI also assessed him, checking for bulges at the waist or weight imbalance. There was none. It was easier to check if he was strapped or not since he was wearing a pair of pajama pants and a white shirt. My father had no weapons on him.Even his place that usually had guards all around him had none. I’d only seen one face apart from my father’: since I stepped in here and it was the person who opened the gate for me.It unsettled me.What was he planning? Had he decided today was the day he killed me?His lack of protection unsettled me more than if he’d greeted me with a rifle.“Dinner’s already served,” he said, placing a heavy hand on my should

LORENZO~•~The box contained everything we already knew, just with a lot more evidence. There were contracts, stamped and signed. There was a petition to get rid of my parents and it was led by the man I grew up calling father. I’d thought heaven smiled at me when someone came to adopt me. Only for me to end up suspecting him because of things I overheard. There was another flash drive. This one mainly consisted of CCTV footage. Most of which were blurry since they were from years ago, but they were enough to prove that I wouldn’t be committing patricide by killing the fucking monster that called himself my father.I’d kill him, kill everyone else involved, the ones that were still alive at least, then release all the evidence I had.I waited until Isla had fallen asleep before I slipped out of bed.Downstairs, Ricardo, Greg, and Romano were in the living room, watching football. “Ricardo, Romano. My office.”I didn’t wait for either of their responses before I turned around to wal

ISLA~•~The house never felt more alive than the way it did the day we all went back home. Lorenzo had refused a wheelchair. I knew it had more to do with his ego than his physical ability so I let him lean on me as we entered the house. His men, the ones who hadn’t been injured, were all gathered in the living room to greet him. There were so many faces that I had never seen before but they all seemed to know me.Lucia’s mother had prepared a feast, welcoming everybody home. I smiled at the development. Just two weeks ago, she had been wary of Lorenzo and his men. Yet here she was cooking for them. It seemed like she had finally come around. Lucia had tried to make her mother trust Lorenzo but she failed since the woman was mourning her husband and thought that Lorenzo was partly the reason they got ambushed. She wasn’t wrong, but she wasn’t entirely right either. She was glad to know that Nikolai, the man who had orchestrated the ambush was dead. I still couldn’t believe I killed
