Chapter six

Anita

It's been a few weeks since we learned Mackenzie is in fact fertile. We haven't done anything aside from cuddling these last few weeks. My parents stocked her fridge with blood so she had an emergency stash in case there were no vampires for her. She doesn't go more then two days and only drinks enough to keep the bloodlust away.

I woke up in her arms with the urge to get sick. I scramble out of her arms and into the bathroom. I just make the toilet and moments later feel her rubbing my back. I wipe my mouth and rest against Mackenzie. She rubs my stomach and I let out a relieved breath. Then it hits me, I never get sick.

I reach under the sink and take out one of the tests that Mackenzie had bought a few days ago when I missed my period. We both agreed to wait for other symptoms because work at the restaurant has been stressful the last two weeks. Mackenzie helps me up and I pee on the stick that will literally change everything. I place it on the sink and sit back on the floor across from the sink. Mackenzie joins me, setting a timer on her phone.

We stay quiet those long three minutes. I was so zoned out that I jumped at the sound of her timer going off. She rubs my back in comfort and I let out a calming breath. She reaches for the test, holding it for us both to see the plain as day positive sign. I'm not sure which of us was more in shock, me or Mackenzie.

God only knows how long we'd been sitting there before my parents walked in, looking for us. "We've been trying to call you over an hour. Anita we had a breakfast date...," My mother says with worry until she saw how lost we both looked. "Sweetheart, are you okay?"

I turn into Mackenzie as a random fit of sobs escape my lips. I felt her tears crash at the top of my head and wrap my arms around her waist. I honestly don't know why I'm crying so hard, I'm over the moon happy right now. I guess I never imagined this would happen for me. Finding someone and starting a family. I know my relationship with Mackenzie is fast moving, but I don't care. She's been there when I needed someone and has turned my look on life around.

"Did you girls need to be alone? We didn't realize this was an emotional day for you. We can reschedule...," My mother says in a soothing tone.

"No, I want to be with all those who love me, please," I ask in a choked whisper as I sit back and Mackenzie wipes my eyes. "We can have breakfast here."

"Of course, anything you'd like," my father asks with a light smile.

"Something light please," I say with a light smile and Mackenzie helps me up, dropping the pregnancy test. My mother picks it up, looking at at and looks at me with tears in her eyes. "Surprise."

She takes me in a bone crushing hug and my father looks confused. "We just took a test," Mackenzie says in a choked whisper and I could tell she was mixed emotional. "I need a minute, please?"

I give her a kiss and she smiles lightly. "I love you Mackenzie Kingsley," I say in a soothing whisper and tears roll down her cheeks.

"I love you too," she chokes in a tight whisper, barely audible.

I wipe her single fallen tear and usher my parents away from our bathroom to give her the privacy she asked for. My mother has me sit at the breakfast bar and starts a pot for tea. A lot of coffee that was just beginning to brew and the smell was making my stomach wretch. I quickly turn of the pot and jump the little coffee that was beginning to brew down the drain.

I rest my head on my folded arms on the counter and breathe slowly through the nausea. Familiar hands rub my back and I let out a calming breath. I keep my head down until the nausea passes and slowly stand back up. Mackenzie holds up what looks like a ginger candy and I take it. "Thank you," I say in a shaky breath.

"I made an appointment to get it medically confirmed. I have my doubts because of what I am and my age," she says in a choked whisper and I could see the pain in her eyes, the battle of her inner demon. "It's this afternoon. I need to know Anita, it's killing me."

I go in her arms and she lets out a relieved breath. "I want to know too," I choke quietly and she rubs my back in comfort. "Don't leave me Mack."

"Never," she says in a soothing whisper, wrapping her arms around me and kissing my forehead. "I'll never leave you Anita."

I shutter a calming breath and bury my face in her chest. Her slightly faster heartbeat was soothing against my cheek and I focus on the rhythm. I was so focused that I jump in her arms at the sound of my mother's voice. "Sorry sweetie," she says apologetically, kissing my cheek. "Your tea is ready and your dad made some apple cinnamon turnovers."

"Mmm, they smell delicious. Thank you," I say with a light smile as we all sit at the breakfast table.

Mackenzie

Seeing the positive sign in the test window set off a wave of emotions. I was having trouble deciphering which emotions I was feeling because it felt like they were all hitting me at once. I could see the smile on my mother's face when I closed my eyes. She was finally getting her wish after three hundred years. I wished she could have been here for this experience like Anita's parents, but that's never going to happen.

Hearing Anita say she loved me for the first time was heartwarming but I still needed a moment alone. I needed to sort through the buzzing feelings in my head. I called the doctor and set up an appointment for this afternoon because I couldn't just go on that stick she peed on. I'm three hundred eighteen years old and old fashioned. I want a doctor's opinion on this magic stick that tells you you're pregnant or not.

I couldn't sit still while we waited for our turn to see the doctor. I was pacing the waiting room, chewing on my thumbnail nervously. After I'm not sure how long, I was turning around to pace for the umpteenth time and walked into Anita. Her head rests on my chest with her arms around my waist. I shutter a calming breath and wrap my arms around her back. She lets out a content sigh and I kiss the top of her head.

"I'm sorry, just really nervous," I say quietly and she looks up at me. "Still feeling nauseous?"

She nods gingerly and rests her forehead against my chest, trying to calm her breathing. I pull a ginger candy from my pocket and hand it to her. She gives me relieved eyes and I take her to sit across my lap. Her name is called just as she gets comfortable and she groans in disappointment.

I stand up letting her legs wrap around my waist and follow the doctor to an examination room. The doctor smiles in sympathy and I set Anita in the examination chair. She starts asking Anita questions and I tune them out. My thoughts drift back to my mother and how she would have loved to be here enjoying this moment with me.

I'm shaken from my thoughts at the smell of fresh blood and look to see Anita getting her blood drawn. The doctors eyes go wide and nearly drops the blood sample. "Breathe Mack, she's running a blood and urine test," Anita soothes in a breathy whisper from the nausea.

I make eye contact with her and let out a calming breath, shifting back into my human form. The doctors hands were still shaking and I take the vile of blood before she either drops it or crushes it. I place it on the counter and step out of the room. I close my eyes and breathe passed the bloodlust.

A hand on my shoulder causes me to tense under their touch. I open my eyes to a pregnant woman with a sympathetic smile. "First time parent," she asks curious, understanding.

I nod vigorously as tears fill my eyes. She smiles lightly and brings my hand to her swollen belly. I furrow my eyebrows, confused but she simply smiles lightly and moments later I feel a jab against my palm, then another and another. The tears slowly roll down my cheeks and she says in a soothing tone, "Something to look forward to."

The door to the exam room Anita is in opens and she doesn't notice the pregnant woman. "Mack, are you okay? The results are in," she says quietly hugging my side.

"I'll let you get back to your wife," the woman says with a light smile, causing Anita to jump in surprise. "Sorry sweetie, didn't mean to startle you. I was just trying to calm your husband's nerves."

"Mackenzie is a woman," Anita says with a smile and the other woman blushes lightly. "Thank you for calming her down."

"I'm sorry," she says shyly, letting my hand go. "Good luck with the results."

Anita and I go back in the room and she grips my hand like it's a lifeline. I rub my thumb over the back of her hand and she lets out a calming breath. Her grip loosens a little and I look at the doctor. She seemed to have calmed down from when she saw my vampire form and smiles lightly at me.

"I'm sorry I scared you before," I say quietly and she nods lightly. "What are the results?"

She looks at the paper in her hand and smiles. "Being this is a supernatural pregnancy, I want to do weekly check-ins. Aside from you, there are no other reported mixed with human and vampire..."

"I'm not a vampire, I'm nothing like those vile creatures," I say in a stern tone, cutting her off. I let out a calming breath and say more calmly, "I'm sorry. I don't like being put in the same category as them."

"I'm sorry too," she says with a genuine smile. " Would you like to see your baby?"

Tears fill my eyes and she nods with understanding. She instructs Anita to lay back in the examination chair and expose her stomach. She flinches at the gel applying to her skin and moments later the doctor uses a wand to move the gel around, looking for the baby in Anita's womb. In a matter of a few seconds she was pointing to a bubble in the middle of the monitor screen. "There's you're baby. You look about eight weeks in," the doctor says with a smile.

I hear sniffles from Anita and she looked upset. "Is it because you have a shift tonight that you're upset," I ask in a soothing whisper and she nods vigorously. "I'll come with you tonight and sit at my usual table. If he says anything to you, he hears from me."

She lets out a relieved breath and I give her a kiss. The doctor hands her a printout of our baby and she never takes her eyes off it. I help her down, take the appointment information for next week and we head out for the short walk home. I had my hand at the small of her back, guiding her around and called her parents who were waiting for us at the house.

"How'd it go," her mother asks with concern.

"It went well, they want to monitor her weekly," I choke with a smile. "She's distracted by the ultrasound printout as we speak."

"She has a shift tonight right," her mother asks protective of Anita. She's seen how she gets treated there.

"I'm going with her tonight," I say in a protective whisper and wrap my arm around her waist.

"We're coming too," Charlie says in the background.

Anita falls slack in my arm and I quickly pocket my phone. I lift her in my arms and she was still clutching the printout. Thankfully we were only down the street from her house and her parents came out as I reached the driveway. They see we're okay and Charlie hands up the phone. Her mother tried to take the printout but Anita hugs it to her chest with a sleepy sigh.

****Okay had something else in mind to add but decided to start the next chapter with it instead. Feel bad for Anita's boss.... Then again maybe not we'll see****
