Chapter 3

Autor: Chuckle Kitty

Chloe quickly waved her hands. "Forget it, Julian. Let her go instead."

"Enough," Julian cut her off, his voice firm. "We aren't changing the rules every time. She can't just throw a tantrum whenever she doesn't get her way."

A few nearby guests turned to glance in our direction.

"When have I ever thrown a tantrum?" I asked.

"Please, don't cause a scene here."

"You know how important this meeting was to me."

"There will be other opportunities."

Austin checked his watch. "Mr. Wade, we really need to go."

Without asking me another word, Julian turned and led Chloe through the doors.

I stood completely still, watching the doors close right in front of me.

---

Fifteen minutes later, Chloe walked out alone. Mr. Vance had already left through a side exit.

Julian retrieved a glass of warm milk from the bar and handed it to me.

"Your stomach has been acting up. Drink a little. Don't drink on an empty stomach."

I took the glass. He remembered my weak stomach, yet he had forgotten why I was here in the first place.

"You still care about me, don't you?" I asked.

Julian blinked, caught off guard. "Of course I care about you."

"Then why did you give my chance to her?"

"It was just one meeting. You already have plenty of industry contacts. Chloe doesn't even have a job right now."

"Because she needs it, I'm supposed to just step aside?"

"You're in a much better position than she is. What's wrong with giving her a break?"

I set the glass down on a nearby table.

"Julian, you said earlier that this was about fairness."

"It was."

"Is it really fair if the outcome was rigged from the start?"

His face instantly drained of color. "What are you talking about?"

"Nothing."

I didn't expose him on the spot.

I knew that even if I pulled out the screenshot of his texts, he would only claim he did it for everyone's good.

I unlocked my phone and chatted with the transfer coordinator from my company.

His last message was still waiting.

[There's an open slot at our Colorado branch. You can report right after the holidays. If you're interested, I can reserve it for you.]

I typed back a single word.

[Yes.]

After hitting send, I went into my emergency contacts and deleted Julian's name.

---

Two days before the holiday, Julian started packing his bags.

He neatly arranged sunscreen, motion sickness pills, light jackets, and bug spray inside his suitcase.

"Miami gets pretty hot, and Chloe’s skin breaks out easily," he noted. "I packed all the essentials for her. Don't forget to remind her to apply her soothing cream at night."

I was organizing my documents. Hearing his words, my hand froze mid-air.

"You remember her medication better than she does."

Julian buckled his suitcase shut without looking up.

"She hasn't been doing well lately, and it's her first time visiting Miami. I just prepped it while I was at it."

"Didn't she book her own hotel room?"

"She said she was scared to stay alone. I canceled our original reservation and upgraded us to a two-bedroom suite. It's more convenient if we all stay together."

I raised my head to look at him.

"Wasn't this supposed to be a trip for just the two of us?"

His hands paused. "It's just one extra person. The more, the merrier."

He opened the pantry cabinet and pulled out my favorite snacks.

"I bought those treats you like. I'll keep them in the car for the drive."

I glanced at the open suitcase by his feet.

There were no sugar-free drinks or wrist braces packed for me, only two bags of fruit gummies that Chloe loved.

---

That evening at dinner, Julian suddenly spoke up. "Once we get back from Miami, let me propose properly and set a wedding date."

"What about Aspen?" I asked.

"We can go next time."

"When does what I want ever actually count?"

The gentle expression on his face slowly dissolved. "Do you really have to start this while we're eating?"

"You brought up the wedding first."

"I just said we would discuss it after we get back. I never said we weren't getting married."

"But you won't even respect where I want to go for a simple holiday."

"It's just a trip. Getting married is what actually matters." He pushed a bowl of soup toward me. "Stop overthinking and eat."

Steam rose from the soup, but I couldn't taste anything.

---

After dinner, Julian got a work call and had to run back to his office to retrieve a file.

Before leaving, he glanced at the luggage by the doorway.

"Don't stress yourself out anymore. Get some sleep. I'll be back as soon as I grab the file."

After the door had clicked shut, I opened the closet.

I packed my passport, bankbooks, and a few changes of clothes into an old duffel bag.

My movements were slow and deliberate.

Part of me feared he would suddenly walk back through the door, but another part knew he wouldn't even notice I was packing.

On the nightstand sat a framed photo of us at the beach. He had his arm around my shoulder, smiling effortlessly.

I turned the frame face-down on the nightstand.

My phone buzzed. A text from Julian popped up.

[Don't forget to buy motion sickness pills for Chloe tomorrow. She said she ran out at home.]

I stared at the screen for a long moment before typing back.

[Buy them yourself.]

  • The Dice Game I Could Never Win   Chapter 8

Three days after Julian left, Mr. Gabriel notified me that the lease termination documents were ready, but they still needed both of our signatures.I scheduled a meeting with him for Friday to finalize everything. That evening, a text came from Julian.[Let's resolve the apartment matter all at once. I'll be there.]I replied instantly.[Fine. We will only discuss the apartment and our belongings.]---After work on Friday, I met him outside our old apartment complex. He handed me a paper folder."The lease cancellation, the inventory list, and the expense ledger are all inside."I flipped through the documents. The rent, deposit, utilities, and jointly purchased furniture were all broken down clearly according to what each of us had actually paid."Have you checked the numbers?""I did.""Good."I pulled out a pen and signed my name on the termination papers.Julian watched me, his voice dropping into a low hush. "Do we really have to be this cold about everything?"

After the holiday ended, I officially reported for duty at the Aspen branch.During my first week, I took the bus in the wrong direction and spent half an hour wandering around in a pouring rainstorm. In the past, I would have called Julian right away.He always knew the fastest route to get me home, and he would always say, "How do you still get lost so easily? Just stay put and let me pick you up."This time, I simply checked the bus routes on my phone, transferred twice, and arrived ten minutes late. When I arrived, the receptionist told me the team lead was waiting for me in the conference room.I pushed the door open and met the man assigned to guide me.Liam Jason. He didn't interrogate me about why I was late. He simply slid a glass of warm water across the table."Drink some water first. The rain's heavy today, so travel conditions are bad.""Thank you."He handed me my onboarding paperwork without flipping the pages for me or dictating which form I had to read first

The holiday wasn't over yet, so the office wasn't officially open.During the day, I looked for an apartment and got used to the neighborhood. At night, I prepared my onboarding paperwork so I would be ready to report to the branch office as soon as the break ended. On the fifth afternoon, Julian found me anyway.I found out later that he had badgered Mr. Gabriel into admitting I was moving to Aspen. Then, using a photo of the mountain town I had posted on social media, he checked every single boutique hotel in the area until he tracked me down.He wore the same gray jacket from the day he left. Stubble shadowed his jaw, and he held a brown paper bag in his hand."I brought you your stomach medicine," he said. "And those almond pastries you like."I stopped on the porch steps and didn't reach out for the bag."Posting a photo didn't mean I wanted you to track me down.""I was just worried about you.""Why are you here, Julian?""To take you home.""I'm not going back."

At nine-seventeen, Julian’s call came through just as I landed in Aspen.I didn't hear it ring.Ten minutes later, another message popped up.[Evelyn, where are you? Boarding is closing soon.]Right after that came a relentless barrage of missed calls.I rolled my black duffel bag through the crowded arrival terminal. This time, I wasn't late.I had simply stopped running to his side.I sat outside the airport for half an hour before finally turning on my phone screen.[Did you go to the wrong terminal?][Answer your phone.][Chloe, stop playing around. She's still waiting.]I stared at that last sentence. He still thought I was just throwing a scene to get his attention.I flagged down a taxi and gave the driver the address of the lodge I had booked in advance. My phone rang again. This time, I answered."Where are you?"His voice was heavy. In the background, I could hear airport announcements and Chloe’s hushed attempts to soothe him.I looked out at the unfamil

He called almost immediately."What's wrong with you?""Nothing.""Your tone is icy. Don't tell me it's nothing."I stared at the half-packed duffel bag on the floor."Julian, I'm not going to Miami."Silence heavy on the line for a few seconds."Here we go again.""I'm not throwing a tantrum this time.""Are you still hung up on what happened at the gala? I already told you there will be other opportunities.""What if I insist on going to Aspen?"He let out a long sigh. "I'll take you there another time, alright? But we can't change the Miami trip now. Chloe has been looking forward to this for weeks.""You'll take me to Aspen?""Someday."I was tired of hearing that word."Fine.""That's more like it. Wait for me to get back and we'll talk. Don't do anything reckless on your own."After hanging up, I saved the screenshot of my plane ticket to Aspen and forwarded the relocation confirmation to my personal email.Julian promised he would take me to Aspen. What he d
