Chapter 1

Ginger
No one expected me to show up outside the private dining room.

The smiles on their faces froze, wineglasses suspended in mid-air.

After a violent fit of coughing, I found it a little easier to breathe.

"Layla, what are you doing here?" Charles shot to his feet, then sank back down, his eyes darting instinctively to the woman beside him.

I didn't answer. My gaze had already landed on the table overflowing with food and gift boxes.

I recognized every single shopping bag. They were all brands I'd mentioned to Charles over and over but never received. Now he'd given them all to another woman. Lena.

My son Carl sat in Lena's lap, the two of them looking so cozy they could've been mother and child. "Congrats on your promotion, Mommy Lena. You're gonna be even more awesome!"

Lena beamed, clearly touched, and kissed him on the cheek.

"Lena, come see what surprise I've got for you!" It was Gloria, Charles's mother.

One by one, the very people who'd just told me on the phone they were picking out my gifts, already on their way to celebrate my birthday, filed in through the door.

My mother. My brother. My best friend.

Every one of them wore a genuine smile, arms full of gifts, walking in right past me.

The moment they saw me, the chatter died. The smiles froze on their faces.

I looked at Charles and tried to keep my voice from shaking. "Charles, today is my birthday."

No matter how hard I fought it, another cough was clawing its way out of my chest.

Charles frowned, looking annoyed, and lowered his voice. "Sorry, Layla. Lena got promoted today, so we decided last minute to throw her a celebration."

He stepped toward me to put his arm around my shoulders, but I pulled away.

"No, this wasn't last minute." I cast a cool glance at the gift boxes on the table. "These are all limited editions from designer boutiques. That handbag alone has a six-month waiting list."

Six months ago, I'd been lying in a hospital bed after surgery, unable to reach him no matter how hard I tried.

All the while, he'd been placing luxury handbag orders for Lena.

Charles slowly lowered his hand, his expression turning cold. "Layla, Lena's promotion is a happy occasion. Don't ruin it. Besides, I'm the Don. Can't I even spend my own money?"

Isabella immediately rushed over and shoved me. "Don't make a scene here. You're embarrassing yourself!"

She stared at me, eyes full of disappointment. "Your father specifically asked on his deathbed that we take care of Lena. She's a Ferraro princess too, same as you. I'm supposed to treat her well."

Lena was a girl my father had rescued from an underground casino seven years ago. He'd told everyone she was to be considered a member of the Ferraro Family from then on.

For this adopted girl, Isabella had completely forgotten her own daughter's birthday.

Vivian chimed in to defend her. "Come on, Layla, this isn't Charles's fault. We're the ones who asked him to come. Can you stop being so difficult?"

I let out a sudden laugh. Apparently, everything was my fault.

A violent coughing fit nearly knocked me off my feet. Tears streamed from the corners of my eyes, the kind that come from pain, not sadness.

Charles rubbed his forehead, pulled off his gloves, and patted my back. "Lena was adopted by your father. She grew up without a real family, so she's always been insecure. I forgot, okay? But you need to get that princess temper of yours under control. You can't just throw a fit whenever you feel like it."

The same old excuse. He'd once ignored me waiting to celebrate our anniversary because Lena had a tiny cut on her finger. His reason? He forgot.

When I pressed him, he said he'd been afraid my princess temper would make things worse.

When Lena called in the middle of the night complaining of a stomachache, he dropped everything and left me, sick in bed myself, and didn't come home for two days.

His explanation? He forgot.

Eventually, I stopped asking for one simple reason.

No matter what I asked, he always found a way to make it my fault. That way, his neglect and betrayal always had the perfect excuse.

"Come on, Layla, don't be upset. I shouldn't have forgotten. I'll make it up to you tomorrow, okay? Whatever you want, I'll buy it." He offered a thin smile and moved to wrap his arms around me.

But I could see the truth. His mouth curved in a smile, but his eyes held nothing. There wasn't a trace of warmth.

"Charles, I want a divorce."

Everyone who'd been lecturing me went dead silent.

Charles dropped the act, tugging at his tie in irritation. "Layla, put away your princess attitude. I'm not in the mood to coddle you."

Just then, the quiet room was broken by Lena's soft sobbing.

She dabbed at the corners of her eyes with a tissue and stood to apologize. "I'm so sorry, Layla. This is all my fault.

"I was just so happy about my promotion, and Charles didn't want to let me down, that's all. I'm apologizing to you. But if your marriage falls apart because of this, I'll never forgive myself."

"Get away from her!" A sudden force slammed into me. Carl had charged over and shoved me hard.

That changed several months later, when my birthday came around again.Ryan had reserved a table at a restaurant. The moment we stepped outside, there was Charles, waiting by the estate gates. He looked haggard. When he saw me, he held out a huge bouquet of pink roses. "Happy birthday, Layla. I didn't forget this year."He looked at me with begging eyes. "I haven't contacted Lena once. She's out of my life for good."All I'm asking is one chance to make things right. I promise, from now on it'll only be you, I...""I know." I cut him off. "But Mr. Moretti, the time when I needed you most has already passed, and the love I had for you is gone. To me now, you're just a stranger. The kind I wouldn't spare a glance for if you dropped dead on the side of the road."Ryan pulled the car up and opened my door. "Let's go. It's about to rain. I don't want you catching a cold."I nodded and climbed in. Then I leaned out and said to Charles, "You probably forgot. My favorite flower was never the p

Charles reached to reject the call, but I was faster. I picked up and put it on speaker."Charles, save me! That Augusto capo broke out of prison! He's looking for me everywhere, and he's going to kill me!" Lena was screaming and crying, her voice hoarse.Without Charles's protection, Lena's claim to being a Ferraro princess was nothing but an empty title. The Augusto capo she'd burned was certain to come after her, and nothing was holding him back."Charles, have you forgotten how much we meant to each other? Save me, take him out for me, I swear this is the last time, and then I'll disappear forever!"Ryan let out a quiet laugh.Under Ryan's contemptuous gaze, Charles's face flushed crimson. "Lena, I warned you not to contact me again. If you do, I'll kill you before he even finds you!"He hung up, blocked her number, and showed me his phone. "Layla, she called me. Look, I've blocked her. I'll never have anything to do with her again!"But I'd stopped caring long ago. "Charles, I rea

It was two weeks before I was moved from the ICU to a regular room. The room smelled strange.I opened my eyes and saw Charles sitting by my bed. His hair was a tangled mess, his stubble had grown into a scraggly beard, and his clothes looked like the same ones he'd been wearing the last time I saw him. When he saw me awake, he blinked in disbelief, then bolted out of the room shouting for a doctor.Isabella and Mark broke into smiles when they saw me awake, thanking God over and over."Layla, thank God you're finally awake.""God, you scared me half to death! That snake Lena is gone for good—your brother made sure of it!"I looked at them with no expression at all. These were the very people who had dismissed me, who had hurt me again and again. Now they were putting on this concerned act. It was nauseating. The gunshot wound in my chest flared with pain at the slightest movement. And the wounds inside, the ones that would never heal, were gifts from every single one of them.I pulled

Charles crushed the paper cup flat in an instant, his mind flashing to the blood-soaked body on the gurney. He broke into a sprint, then his legs gave out and he nearly collapsed.By the time he reached the operating room, gasping for air, the red light above the door seemed to be telling him something: this time, she wasn't throwing a tantrum. This time, they might never see each other again. He exhaled sharply.Charles's heart was hammering. He let out one breath, then clamped his mouth shut.It felt as if his heart might leap out of his throat at any second.Mark stared at the surgical consent form, his face drained of every last drop of color."How is this possible? How could she just happen to run into an ambush? I only wanted her to stop being so hard on Lena..."Isabella's eyes were red and swollen, fixed on the operating room doors, her hand tracing the sign of the cross over her chest again and again.Charles said nothing. He slowly crouched down, buried his head in his hands,

Lena blushed and pressed a finger to her lips.I kept my eyes on Charles, as though I hadn't heard a word Carl said."I'm not the one pushing my luck, Charles. You are. I haven't held you accountable for your infidelity, and you should be grateful for that. Don't forget, you got this marriage by kneeling at my feet and begging."The color drained from Charles's face. My words had struck a nerve.Lena looked at Charles with concern. "Charles, don't talk to Layla like that. She's not wrong. I'm the one at fault. I'll disappear. Forever..."Charles fixed me with a hard stare. After a long moment, he picked up the divorce papers. "Layla, you know me. I'm not a kind man. Divorcing me comes with a price."He picked up a pen, tapped it against the papers, and lit a fresh cigar."The Augusto Family is muscling in on our arms-smuggling route. Take that route back for me, and I'll agree to the divorce. But think carefully. They built their empire on contract killing. They've got ways of dealing
