Chapter 1

After Dante left, I stood at the floor-to-ceiling window for a long time.

The syringe of blue nerve agent sat on the coffee table within reach.

For 48 hours, every sign of life would disappear. Once my coffin was out of the cemetery, someone would come and take me away.

He'd even prepared a new identity for me.

Anna.

An orphan who'd inherited a distant relative's fortune in Switzerland. No ties, no attachments, and no reason ever to set foot in this underworld again.

My confidante, Agatha Moro, stared at the new identity papers, her eyes red.

"Miss Chiara, he's even decided what you'll be called for the rest of your life."

I put the papers away in a drawer.

"Saves me the trouble. Isn't that nice?"

Everyone knew that Dante, the Cordano family's new Don, had taken the eldest daughter of his sworn enemies, the Gariboldi family.

Me. He'd snatched me right out of my own engagement party and locked me away on his estate.

For my sake, he'd defied a death warrant issued by the elders and personally shot three capos who dared to provoke me. He'd signed over to me a share of all shipping profits on the Rhine. He spoiled me so lavishly that every socialite in Europe envied me.

There was only one thing he never did.

He'd never slept with me.

For a while, I thought it was a gentleman's code ingrained in him, his way of respecting the little dignity I had left.

But I was nothing more than a gilded target he'd placed in the line of fire.

His enemies had kept me in their sights for three years. Now that the curtain had risen, the stand-in had to leave the stage.

Bruno, the butler, announced from outside the door, "Ms. Marchi has arrived."

Isabella walked in wearing a pure white dress, followed by two armed bodyguards in black trench coats.

She tipped her head back and studied the massive architectural rendering hanging over the fireplace.

It showed a lavish floating casino that had yet to be built.

In Dante's handwriting, the casino's name was "The Chiara."

It was the birthday gift he'd given me the year before.

Isabella gave a soft laugh. "The design's nice. The name's wrong, though."

The architect, Klaus, immediately spread a new set of drawings across the table and started making changes.

I watched them take the blueprint down.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Changing it, of course," Isabella said.

Her voice was soft and cruel. "This casino is going up right where Dante and I watched the sunrise on our first date.

"He promised he'd build me a palace like no other.

"It was only after I was kidnapped that your name went on the blueprint."

So even that grand promise, that one-of-a-kind gift, and that future with my name on it had never been mine.

Someone dragged a scraper wet with sharp-smelling solvent across my name.

The paint melted, and the word "Chiara" dissolved into a muddy blur.

Agatha was so angry she was shaking.

"If Ms. Marchi wants one, she can have a new one painted. Why destroy all of Miss Chiara's work right in front of her?"

"Because Isabella wants to," Dante said as he came in.

He went to Isabella's side. When he noticed a speck of dust on her hand, he immediately pulled a handkerchief from his suit pocket and wiped it away.

A black falcon was embroidered in one corner of the handkerchief.

I'd stayed up three whole nights embroidering it for him, one stitch at a time.

For once, he'd actually complimented me when I gave it to him. "Very elegant."

That had made me happy for a long time.

I hadn't known until that day that Isabella's code name was Falcon.

Isabella leaned against his shoulder.

"But Chiara doesn't seem to want to let it go."

Dante followed my gaze to the ruined blueprint.

"It's only a casino.

"Isabella was tortured for five years because of me. Now she just wants back what belongs to her, and you're going to fight her for it?"

I lowered my eyes.

"I'm not."

He seemed satisfied that I'd given in so meekly.

"I know this is hard for you.

"For three years, I kept your brother safe while he grew up, went easy on the Gariboldi family, and never truly treated you like a prisoner.

"Even in Switzerland, I'll make sure you live comfortably for the rest of your life."

He paused.

"Chiara, learn to be content with what you have."

I watched Klaus write a different name on the new drawings. It read "The Isabella."

Little by little, her name erased every trace of my existence there.

Dante was right.

I should be content.

For three years, he'd taken bullets for me and spent sleepless nights by my side. After working late on family business, he would sometimes kiss my forehead in secret.

Even if it was all an act for his enemies, at least I hadn't known at the time.

I'd truly fallen for him.

But when I curled up in his arms, happy beyond reason because I thought I'd finally found somewhere I belonged, what did he see when he looked at me?

Probably just a pawn that had finally been tamed.

Klaus put down his pen.

On the new blueprint, Isabella's name gleamed.

Dante and Isabella looked so perfect together.

As if that palace on the water had never held any trace of me at all.

After my funeral, Dante Cordano issued a statement that shocked people on both sides of the law.The statement spelled everything out.The new Don admitted that he had forced Chiara Gariboldi, the daughter of his sworn enemy, to stay by his side by threatening to destroy her family, all so he could rescue the woman he loved. Then, while pretending to dote on Chiara, he had used her as live bait to draw out his enemies.Chiara Gariboldi had never wanted the Cordano family's power, nor had she ever betrayed her own family. Her death wasn't an act of loyalty to any man.The Don, her former love, and her own family had driven her to it, step by step. The statement spread everywhere. The eulogy Marco had prepared for me became a joke. The people who had once praised him for swallowing his pride for the family now cursed him for selling out his fiancée for profit. The council of elders joined forces to remove my father, forcing him to hand over all his power and leaving him idle at home.My

In the end, Dante didn't bury me in any family's plot.He bought an entire cliff outside the city and buried me where I could watch the sunrise. There was no Cordano family crest on my headstone and no Gariboldi name either.Only one word was carved there.Chiara.On the day of the burial, a light rain fell over Vienna.Dante wanted to give me the grandest funeral imaginable, but the elders of the four families stood outside the church and objected, "She's still a Gariboldi, after all."She never had any official standing. How can she be buried with Cordano family honors?"Dante asked, "When I snatched her out of her engagement party, why didn't any of you bring up the rules then?"No one answered.Back then, the Gariboldi family was weak, and Marco didn't dare fight back. The elders hadn't wanted to cross the new Don over a woman, either.Everyone said I was just a woman. Now that I was dead, they suddenly remembered the rules.Dante didn't insist on giving me the family honors. Not b

After sunrise, Isabella arrived at the cemetery. She'd traded her gown for a plain black dress. When she saw me, she stopped outside the cemetery gates and didn't come any closer.Dante had kept watch over me all night, and his eyes were bloodshot."What are you doing here?" Dante asked."Everyone at the estate is waiting for you," Isabella said. Then she added softly, "The celebration is over."Dante looked up."She's dead."Isabella paled."I know."But her death has nothing to do with me.""Nothing to do with you?" Dante echoed. He looked at her as though he were seeing her for the first time.Isabella gripped her sleeves."She bought the cyanide herself."She injected the poison herself."Dante, I didn't make her do it."I only wanted back what belonged to me."In a quiet voice, Dante asked, "What belonged to you?""The title of Donna of the Cordano family," Isabella said. "The floating casino. And you."Dante said, "But that casino was designed for her in the first place."It was

Dante didn't go back to the estate. He had the entire cemetery sealed off and summoned all the top doctors from the four families that same night. The lights burned all night. The doctors took turns injecting me with antidotes and performing CPR.My mother couldn't bear to watch anymore. Sobbing, she collapsed in front of Dante. "Don Cordano, let her rest in peace."Dante didn't look up. "She's only been poisoned."There has to be a way to neutralize it."An elderly doctor stepped forward, trembling, his head bowed low. "The cyanide has been in her system too long. Her heart and lungs have completely failed."Not even God himself could bring her back."Dante finally went quiet. He sat beside me and wiped away the blood left on my lips after the doctors' attempts to revive me.When I'd been shot, he'd cared for me the same way.Back then, I was in so much pain I could barely think. I clung to his hand and asked, "Will you leave me?"He said no.I believed him.But now, when he tried to

By the time Dante got to the cemetery, it was already dark.He hadn't even changed out of his formal clothes. A white rose from the celebration was still pinned to his chest.Nothing there looked more out of place than his expensive leather shoes crunching across the debris.Marco sat in front of a headstone, holding me.He hadn't let anyone close the coffin again. My mother knelt beside him, wiping my face again and again. My father stood in the wind, looking as though he'd suddenly aged 20 years.Dante walked over and reached out to touch me.Marco turned away, shielding me."Don't touch her."Dante's hand stopped in midair."Give her to me.""She's not yours," Marco said."She lived in my house for three years," Dante said."Those were three years you stole from me," Marco shot back.Marco looked up, his eyes bloodshot."She's my fiancée."Dante stared at him, then asked, "If you really thought of her as your fiancée, why did you personally send her off to negotiate?"Marco stiffene

When they carried the coffin out through the estate's secret passage, a grand handover ceremony was underway at the docks. On one side were fluttering streamers and towers of champagne glasses. On the other were a solemn hearse and a road covered in white roses. The two processions were a whole city apart, each headed toward the ending that had been decided for them long ago.Nearly two days later, Marco drove beside the hearse himself.Once they were out of the city, he kept looking up at the sky.The 48 hours were almost up.I was supposed to wake up soon.He had the funeral procession stop outside the cemetery and ordered everyone to move far back.My father warned him in a low voice, "We should go farther out."This is too close to the city. If anyone sees her wake up, everything we planned will be for nothing."Marco ignored him.He couldn't wait any longer. He pried out the coffin nails himself and pushed the lid aside.I lay there quietly, my hands folded over my chest, as pale
