Avery’s eyelashes fluttered. Beneath her fingers hooked around Dominic’s forearm, the stiff suit fabric tightened instantly. The sudden tension in his muscles was sharp, shifting beneath her palm like a coiled spring.

The distance between them compressed as Ivan bowed slightly.

It was the beginning of a hand-kiss.

Ivan’s eyelids lowered, his lips moving inch by inch toward the back of her hand, his eyes locked onto hers through his lenses.

The cool touch never landed.

Dominic’s left hand behind

Six in the morning. Dawn had not yet fully broken.Avery had changed into a thick coat suited for movement. She stood by the bed, organizing her medical kit. She clicked a few emergency vials into the inner compartment. The leather of the kit creaked under her fingers as she pressed the last vial into place. The door lock clicked open.Dominic had not knocked. His gaze landed on the small travel bag at Avery's feet. His brow furrowed."Where are you going?""North Port." Avery did not pause in her work. "You promised I could be there for the final stretch."Dominic walked over with a dark expression. He snatched the travel bag from her feet and tossed it onto the bedside table behind him. The bag hit the wood with a dull thud."You're staying in the estate."Avery looked up, meeting his flat grey eyes."You're afraid I'll mess things up?"Dominic looked down at her from his height. His tall frame blocked most of the light. The morning glow from the window fell in a slanted strip acros

Ten in the morning. East wing terrace.Jessica held a cup of coffee, her deep purple silk robe swaying slightly in the wind. She glanced at Avery, who had arrived uninvited and sat down directly across from her. Her gaze swept over Avery's slightly pale face, then lingered briefly on her deliberately raised coat collar. A faint smile tugged at the corner of her mouth."Dr. Clair, aren't you supposed to be watching over your brother at this hour? Running to find me like this—does Dominic know?"Jessica set down her cup, her fingertips tapping absently against the porcelain rim."They all made quite a move last night. So, now you believe what I told you? Coming to me for backup?"Even though the lingering taste of rust from last night's kiss still throbbed dully between her lips, Avery was even calmer than usual. She dug her nails deep into her palm, using the sharp pain to force herself to maintain an impeccable professional smile. She knew exactly what Jessica was waiting for—she was

Avery was clearing out the old items in her room when she came across a piece of paper. It was tucked inside a medical book she often read—a photocopy of an overseas trust remittance. She had slipped it in two months ago without thinking much of it. At the time, she hadn't looked closely, just assumed it was another discarded bill scattered around the estate. But now, staring at the remarks column, her fingertips went cold inch by inch.【Remarks: Custodial Fee.】【Payee: Winster Overseas Trust.】Avery dug her nails into the paper, leaving a trail of white creases.Jessica's cold laugh echoed in her mind like a slap landing hard across her face."Dominic is cleaning out every single asset that can't see the light. Including you. Including your brother. Including your mother hidden in that safe house."This piece of paper told her plainly that Jessica had been telling the truth.Dominic was paying the Winster family—letting his nominal fiancée hide people for him.And the stack of files

For three days following the gala, an unnatural quiet settled over Kessler Estate.Too quiet. The gravel paths held no footprints. The windows reflected only the sky. No birds crossed the glass. The frequency of Drake’s visits to the study escalated dramatically. Twice a day became nearly eight times. He carried document pouches of varying colors, their contents sealed and completely unknown. Dominic rarely returned before two in the morning. By six, he was gone again.Avery crossed paths with him only three times in the corridors. On each occasion, he offered nothing more than a brief, clipped sentence before immersing himself back in his work.A persistent unease grew within her. She could not shake the intuition that he was deliberately withholding information. At two o'clock in the afternoon, she accompanied Dorothea to the sunroom for a drawing session. The little girl remained quiet and focused. Avery, however, could not focus. Her pencil remained motionless above the paper, the

In the restroom, Avery leaned against the sink and stared at her reflection in the grand mirror. The warm, golden light of the luxury fixtures did little to hide the stark paleness of her skin. The faint red bruising around her wrist where Dominic had clamped his hand down earlier had already begun to fade into a dull gray shadow, but the deep ache in the bone remained stubborn. She pressed a single fingertip against the skin, watching a wave of cold soreness crawl slowly up her forearm toward the elbow.Avery pulled a crisp paper towel from the dispenser, slowly and meticulously drying each fingertip until all traces of water were gone.Twenty minutes left.Dominic had granted her exactly half an hour of solitary downtime before she was required back at his perimeter.Stepping out of the restroom, Avery calculated her routing and decided against returning immediately to the grand ballroom. Instead, she slipped quietly into the western corridor—a dim, narrow gallery lined with heavy B

The scale of the Obsidian City Chamber of Commerce gala was far beyond that of any ordinary commercial gathering. Every casual conversation dropped in this room carried immense weight, pulling at the invisible threads of the vast interest network that controlled every major and minor dock across North Port.Avery kept her arm linked through Dominic’s, feeling herself sinking under the weight of countless subtle, evaluating stares from the surrounding crowd. Even through the heavy layers of their formal attire, she could distinctly feel the rigid tension coiling through the muscles of his arm."Are the major syndicates not the only entities present tonight?"Avery turned her face fractionally toward him, maintaining a flawless, practiced social smile as she kept her voice low enough to ensure the communication loop remained entirely between the two of them. "Those individuals over there have already shifted their visual focus toward our position three times."Dominic pressed her hand g
