Chapter 1

"Ivy! Ivy!"

Adrian called my name several times. When I didn't respond, he had no choice but to crouch down and try to coax me.

"Ivy, it was just one gross-flavored jelly bean. Do you really have to make such a big deal out of it?"

I still didn't respond. The smile slowly faded from his face, and impatience crept into his eyes.

After a long moment, he stood up and frowned down at me where I lay on the floor.

"Ivy, you've become impossible."

My chest tightened. But I was only a soul now. All I could do was float beside him and watch it all in despair.

Adrian, I'm not breathing.

Check my pulse! Even if you just touched my hand, you'd feel how terrifyingly cold I am!

But he turned and walked away, reporting to my father that I was still throwing a tantrum.

The moment my sister Nadia heard that, her eyes welled up. She lowered her head and wiped away her tears.

"Is Ivy mad at me? This is all my fault. I shouldn't have played that joke on her."

My mother's heart instantly ached for her, and she pulled Nadia into her arms.

"Sweetheart, this isn't your fault.

"Ever since she was little, Ivy has never been able to stand you getting even a little attention. She won't stop until the whole family revolves around her."

Adrian hurried over too, handing Nadia a tissue and comforting her gently.

"Ignore her. She's always fought for attention. This whole performance today is just because she doesn't want you to be happy."

My father set his wineglass down hard on the table, his voice tight with anger.

"Faking an illness on such a happy day and ruining everyone's mood. She's completely out of control.

"Adrian, put Ivy out on the terrace. Let the cold wind clear her head. She can come back in once she's thought it over!

"The fireworks show is canceled tonight. She can forget about watching it."

Every word was like a blade driven into my chest. The pain made my whole soul tremble.

Nadia's parents, Franco and Gina Moretti, had died saving my father during our war with the Camorra. So after we adopted her, all of my family's love went to her.

I treated Nadia like my own sister, too.

But my parents seemed convinced that I was hostile toward her. If I spoke to her even a little loudly, I was yelling at her.

When I won a ballet competition, I was showing off on purpose to make Nadia, who'd never learned ballet, feel inferior.

Even on the day I was diagnosed with congenital heart disease, no one in my family believed me. They thought I was faking it to compete for attention.

To earn even a little of their affection, I gave in to everything my parents asked of me, one step at a time.

I gave up ballet, the thing I loved most. I stopped mentioning my heart condition. I put Nadia first in everything.

I always thought that if I were good enough, if I gave in to Nadia enough, my parents would love me the way they used to.

And what did I get for it?

I ended up dead.

Adrian hesitated for a moment, but he still followed my father's order. He hoisted me over his shoulder and headed for the terrace.

He dropped me on the floor. My ankle slammed hard against the doorframe, leaving a bruise.

He glanced at the mark on my ankle and sneered.

"Ivy, you're really committed to the act. You can even take that kind of pain."

Adrian, don't do this to me. Please, stop!

I desperately tried to stop him, but my hands passed right through his body. All I could do was watch as I was shut out on the terrace, cut off from their laughter and chatter.

Nadia looked at me sprawled out there like roadkill. The corner of her mouth curled into a barely noticeable smile, then she quickly put on a pitiful expression.

"Papa, I should go ask Ivy to forgive me.

"After all, I'm only adopted. You don't need to punish her because of me."

"Who told you that? Sweetheart, you'll always be our own flesh and blood."

My father immediately sat up straight, his eyes fixed on Nadia.

Nadia didn't say anything. She lowered her head and darted a quick glance in my direction.

My father caught it instantly. He slammed his hand on the table and roared.

"Ivy, you've gone too far!

"Get up right now and apologize to Nadia!"

No! I never said that! She's lying about me!

I shouted at the top of my lungs, but no one could hear me.

Nadia stepped forward and caught my father's arm, her eyes brimming with tears.

"Papa, don't be angry. I don't blame Ivy. She's always been proud. Of course she won't listen to us.

"It's just that the floor out there is so cold, and I'm worried about her health. Why don't we call the whole Family over? If Ivy feels too embarrassed in front of everyone, maybe she'll get up."

My father nodded and looked at Nadia approvingly.

All I could do was watch in despair as my father ordered Adrian to summon all the Family members.

All these years, you've been framing Ivy!"Nadia's face turned red. You killed Ivy! Give me back my daughter!"My mother, who had always been so elegant, straddled Nadia and slapped her face again and again.Nadia's lip split and bled, but she suddenly burst into manic laughter. She stared up at my mother."I killed Ivy?"You were the ones who said she was faking! You were the ones who let me prank her! You were the ones who wouldn't let anyone save her!"You drove your own daughter to her death with

"No! You can't punish me!"Nadia knew all too well how brutal the Family's punishments could be. She screamed and hid behind my mother, clutching at her clothes and sobbing so hard she could barely breathe."Mamma, help me! I really only wanted to play a joke on Ivy. I never meant to kill her. I didn't do it on purpose."But this time, my mother didn't do what she always had, giving Nadia anything she wanted the moment she saw her cry.My mother stood there in a daze. She still couldn't believe her own daughter was really dead, or that she herself had unknowingly helped kill me."Nadia, why didn't you tell us that your prank was swapping out Ivy's medicine?"My mother suddenly asked.Nadia froze for a moment, then stammered out an excuse."I... I didn't mean to. You all said... Ivy was always faking being sick..."She seemed to have found a good enough reason, and her voice grew confident."I only wanted to prank her because I listened to you. Yes, that's it. This isn't my fa

The cause of my death still wasn't clear, and the Family never cooperated with the police, so Henry stepped in as the medical examiner. He put on gloves and began examining me."Cyanosis of the lips and nail beds. Livor mortis in the lower parts of the back. A pained expression on the face. Combined with her medical history, this was death from an acute heart attack."He looked around and quickly zeroed in on the pill bottle on the floor and the emergency heart pills scattered all around it."The medicine fell right beside where Ivy was sitting. She should have been able to take it."Henry picked up the bottle and examined it. There was nothing wrong with it. It was ordinary pharmacy packaging. He picked up one of the pills, crushed it, and held it to his nose. A mix of rot and fishiness hit him so hard that he started coughing. He realized right away that it was a nasty-flavored jelly bean.Henry crushed every single pill. Without exception, they were all jelly beans. There wa

"Call the doctor! Hurry!"His eyes bloodshot, Adrian roared at my sister and my mother. He gently kissed my ice-cold forehead and murmured to himself."Ivy, don't be scared. I'm going to save you. You're going to be okay."Adrian carefully laid me down and, with trembling hands, unzipped the side of my dress. The moment the fabric fell away, he saw the large dark purple patches of livor mortis all over my body.Adrian had handled countless bodies in his life. He knew all too well what this degree of stiffness and lividity meant. I'd been dead for a long time. There was no chance of bringing me back. The pain nearly drowned him.But he still refused to accept the cruel truth. Like a madman, he grabbed the defibrillator, pressed it to my chest, and started trying to revive me.It was a defibrillator I'd bought a while back, just in case.Back then, I'd half-jokingly told Adrian that if I ever had a bad attack, he had to use it to save me.But he'd barely glanced at it and mock

For a moment, the air in the living room froze. My father was looking over the documents Victor had handed him. Without even looking up, he waved a hand."Don't make a fuss, Victor. Ivy's just throwing a tantrum."She's lying out there playing dead and won't get up no matter what. There's nothing we can do.""No, Ivy's definitely not playing dead!" Victor shouted, already heading for the terrace."Victor!"My father called him back."Leave her. She needs to learn a lesson. Her princess temper has only gotten worse over the years."Bound by the authority of the Don, Victor had no choice but to stop. He didn't dare say another word. But he was still full of shock and doubt. When he'd walked in, he'd clearly seen the wind blow the hair away from my face. My pale skin was covered in large, horrifying patches of livor mortis, and my pupils were already dilated. There was no way that could be faked!"Victor, come with me. I'm going to teach those reckless bastards a lesson."My f

Adrian had barely set foot on the terrace when my father slammed his hand down on the table."This is getting ridiculous. Are we supposed to beg her to get up now?"Adrian stopped in his tracks, and my father went on."There's a thunderstorm coming. As scared of thunder as she is, she'll come back in on her own."That's enough, Maria. You can go. Ivy's my own daughter too. I'm not going to let anything actually happen to her."Maria gave me a long, searching look, then had no choice but to leave.Adrian sat back down on the sofa. Before long, dark clouds gathered overhead.Outside, the wind howled, and fat raindrops pelted my body.Boom!Thunder exploded, and a flash of lightning lit up my pale, lifeless face.Still, I didn't move. I let the storm beat down on me, my body frozen in that same twisted position.Seeing this, Nadia spoke up, as if out of kindness."Ivy's always been so competitive. If she gets up now, it's like admitting she was faking. She's too proud to back
