ELARA POV

I flinch as he suddenly rises to his feet. My head tilts up instinctively, and I catch his face, darkened, and dangerous, like a storm gathering behind his eyes.

“What?” I manage, my voice catching on the word. I have no idea what I’ve done wrong. I’ve been good for the past, what… five minutes?

He narrows his eyes at me. A low growl escapes him before he turns on his heel and storms out.

My brows knit as I stare after him, eyes tracing the ripple of muscle beneath his tailored suit, and watching the broad shoulders, and the taut frame disappear through the doorway.

Whatever that was supposed to mean, I don’t care. I’m just glad he’s gone. I might talk big, but around him? I’m a trembling mess.

There’s something about him, with the way he owns every inch of space, how the air itself bends around his presence. Christ, it’s a miracle I didn’t spill my food under that piercing gaze.

With him gone, the tension drains from my shoulders. I finally breathe, shovel food into my mo

  • The Don's Property   Chapter 52

ELARA POVWhen I step out, Nero was already out of the house so I have to eat breakfast alone with the resentment still burning inside me. Now, I’m pacing Diana’s room, telling her what happened between me and Nero yesterday."What did I ever do wrong?" I heave my shoulders, throwing my hands up. "I was on my own when he suggested we go out. Then suddenly he just couldn’t stand me. I didn’t even do anything wrong. Matter of fact, I was on my best behavior. I think?"I finally turn to Diana, whose ears I have been wearing out for the past hour. She’s busy stuffing one of her strange little dolls, paying me absolutely no mind.I cross my arms over my chest and frown. "Are you even listening to me?""Unfortunately," she grunts, stabbing a needle into the doll’s fabric."Seriously, Diana. I’m talking about something that hurts me greatly."She doesn't look up. "You’re talking about a man acting like a man. It’s hardly news, Elara."True, but still."Come on." I groan in renewed frustrat

  • The Don's Property   Chapter 51

ELARA POVWhen Nero walks back into the diner, the area suddenly becomes stuffy as if the air shifts to accommodate him. If he was in a bad mood leaving the studio, he’s furious now. His jaw is clenched so tightly I can see the muscle ticking beneath the skin, and his eyes have darkened, heavy with a hot wave of aggression. He stops at our table, not even looking at me. “Up,” he says like he’s talking to a machine not a person.“What?” I ask, confused.“You heard me.” He holds my gaze with his icy one.Seriously, what is the issue now? I’m trying so hard to be understanding of his mood, especially considering he actually did something decent for me today by bringing me here, and then the painting too, but I can only take so much.I take a steadying breath, forcing down my own brewing irritation. Don't take the bait, I tell myself. I’m in a good mood, and I won’t let Nero’s whiplash ruin it.“Okay,” I manage, keeping my voice neutral as I slide out of the booth and we head to the car.

  • The Don's Property   Chapter 50

ELARA POVWe’ve been stuck in gridlock for three hours, and it doesn’t look like it’s clearing up anytime soon.I try to keep my eyes on the window, but my eyes keep drifting back to Elara. Just like now. She’s clutching the painting to her chest like it’s her most prized possession, a soft hum filling the quiet air between us. Knowing she only hums when her spirits are high, a strange sense of unwanted triumph settles in my chest.A low grumble interrupts the silence, causing my eyes to lift to meet her eyes.Guilty as fuck, she clutches her stomach. “That wasn’t me.” Her voice jumps an octave.A second growl betrays her and I have to fight to keep my lips from curving into a smile as I arch a brow.“Fine, it’s me.” She pouts her plush lips, slumping against the seat. “We’ve been stuck in this traffic for hours and I’m hungry.”I shake my head, though I can’t bring myself to be annoyed at her.Minutes later, we’re in a roadside diner. Elara is stuffing her mouth with a burger while

  • The Don's Property   Chapter 49

NERO POVI don’t take a step without knowing where my feet will land. Every move is calculated, and I have never been impulsive in my life. Yet here we are.Bringing Elara here, to the place my mother slowly lost her mind is not only impulsive, but reckless too. After the horrible things those men did to her that night, she lost herself in this studio. Her painting got progressively worse, rotting alongside her sanity. Most of the time she didn’t know I existed, and rarely, when she blinked back to reality enough to recognize me, she was yelling at me to get out, scrambling away to hide like I was part of the demons that broke her.The day I found her in the pool of her blood, I already knew it was coming. And even though I was just ten then, all I felt relief. Not sadness nor sorrow. Relief, like a heavy weight was lifted off my shoulder.“Finally, her suffering and misery had come to an end.” That was my first thought. When I bought back the studio, it took me three months to be abl

  • The Don's Property   Chapter 48

ELARA POVNero already heard it, and a dark, satisfied look spread over his face, his eyes dropping to my mouth. He leans in, just as the words, "We have reached the destination," slice through the heavy air, impossibly loud in the tension filled car.The words hit me like a bucket of ice water, and I scramble off Nero's lap. The fabric of my dress suddenly feels too thin, leaving me exposed to the cool air of the car and, worse, to Nero’s gaze. I refuse to look at him. I refuse to acknowledge the dark, satisfied amusement I know is dancing in his eyes as I wildly adjust my dress.God... I can’t believe I let out that desperate and needy whimper. If I hadn’t thought I could fight him, I never would have ended up in his lap, and that wouldn't have happened. The second the car glides to a halt, I practically jump out, drawing in a deep breath to compose myself before Nero appears beside me. The afternoon air hits my exposed skin like a shock, chasing away the heat I felt on his lap.Wha

  • The Don's Property   Chapter 47

ELARA POVExcitement buzzes through my veins as I step out of the house. I’m draped in a shimmering emerald dress that is short enough to give Nero a stroke, paired with towering red-bottomed Louboutins I can barely walk in and a matching purse. To top it all off, a heavy diamond glitters at my throat. And since subtlety clearly isn’t on tonight’s menu, I’ve got a single glove on one hand and stockings hugging my legs.It is satisfying and vindicative to finally wear the spoils of Nero’s black card.Though, I have no idea where we are headed. I just hope it isn’t traumatic as the last time I left this house.Nero pushes the car door open before I even reach it, and a wave of mint and dark spice washes over me, instantly wrapping around my senses. I slide in, and his eyes are already on me, the intensity of his gaze leaving a burn in its wake.“Thanks.” I purr, flashing a coy smile and pretend not to notice the thunderous expression darkening his features. The driver shifts the car int
