Chapter 1

"I've already hired the best specialist from Bossotini," my husband, Lorenzo Corsi, said. "As long as there's still a way—"

"Mr. Corsi," the doctor said, interrupting him. "Mi dispiace, but we weren't able to save the child. We also had to remove your wife's uterus to stop the bleeding."

Lorenzo tightened his grip on the report.

I didn't cry. Instead, I just asked the doctor for the things that were found in the wreckage. The nurse handed me a transparent bag with a scorched ultrasound photo inside.

The child had only been 12 weeks old. Their face had been so tiny that it was hard to make out their features.

Lorenzo had slipped the photo into the inner pocket of his coat during the banquet, telling me that he would announce the news to the entire family after the cake-cutting ceremony.

Nearly half of the photo had been burned away, but his coat was still in pristine condition as it draped across Viviana Rossi's figure.

Lorenzo leaned down and pulled me into his arms. "I truly believed that you would walk out unscathed, Clara. The car was just outside. I thought that I would make it in time—"

"Did you come back?" I asked.

Lorenzo's arms stiffened.

Just then, the hospital room door swung open. The Underboss, Matteo Scaglione, said in a low voice, "Ms. Rossi is awake, Don Corsi. The doctor said that she's in shock. She's only willing to let you get close to her. The elder of the Rossi family is also waiting for you."

Lorenzo shook his head. "Let them wait."

However, his phone rang a few seconds later. Viviana was calling him. Her voice was thick with tears when it echoed from the receiver after he picked up.

"Can you accompany me for a little while?"

Lorenzo looked at me. His expression suggested that he wanted me to decide for him.

Seven years ago, he tore the medical bill reimbursement contract to shreds as everyone in the casino watched. He told me that I would never need to beg anyone for anything ever again.

I didn't want to beg him to stay anymore. "You should go."

Lorenzo immediately pressed the call button for me, saying, "It'll only take 30 minutes at most. I'll return to your side then."

It didn't take long for his footsteps to fade into the distance.

Half an hour later, a nurse entered my hospital room to wipe me down. I subconsciously glanced at the door.

"Your husband isn't back yet?" she asked.

"He said that he'll be back soon."

The nurse prepared some warm water before leaving to check on the patient next door. I stared at the clock on the wall. The door remained closed even after a full minute had passed.

I grabbed my phone and dialed Lorenzo's number, but the person who picked up was Matteo.

"The Don is accompanying Ms. Rossi for a check-up. Do you need something, Mrs. Corsi? I can pass your message to him."

I gripped the edge of the blanket. I had only been willing to let Lorenzo see the pathetic side of me that needed somebody else's help to sit up.

"No need," I said.

When the nurse returned, I let go of the blanket and asked her to help me. The movement strained my wound when I turned on my side. The pain was so overwhelming that I briefly clutched the nurse's sleeve before hastily letting go.

The nurse grabbed my shoulders to steady me, telling me that it was alright. After she wiped me down, she placed a glass of water near me and raised the headboard.

I thanked her softly and didn't look at the door again.

…

Lorenzo didn't return even when the afternoon rolled around.

I told the nurse to pass me my phone and dialed my lawyer, Irene Tambroni's number.

"Prepare a divorce agreement for me. And also a list of assets that are financially unrelated to the Corsi family."

Irene didn't question me. Instead, she asked, "When do you plan to leave?"

I looked at the calendar. The doctor had scheduled my last follow-up appointment for next week. Once the check-up was over, I could leave New Volka by car according to the doctor's instructions.

"In a week," I answered.

I slipped the ultrasound photo into my bag. I wasn't going to wait three minutes or half an hour for Lorenzo anymore.

"It's been ten whole days. If you don't come out right now, I'm going to break your door down," Nora exclaimed.I smiled as I showed her my passport. My destination was Florenzo. When Nora asked me to bring back some chocolate for her, I told her to give me a list. I didn't want her to only recall what she wanted when I was already at the airport.Irene invited me out for coffee before I left, handing over the last few documents that belonged to me. A postcard that Papa sent me in the past was among the documents. He had written down the names of the streets that he had strolled along in his youth on the back."They found it in an old book that you left behind in the mansion," she said.I smoothed out the folded edges with my fingers and slipped it into my bag.Irene hesitated for a moment before asking if I was willing to meet Lorenzo. "He's here to sign another handover document. We were supposed to meet after you left, but the driver told me that he's already here.""It's alr

Lorenzo didn't ask me if I wanted to reconsider my decision when his lawyer handed the document to me. His hand that was pressed against the paper trembled slightly when he penned his signature on the last page, causing the ink to smear slightly.I slipped my own copy of the document into an envelope. After Irene checked everything, she informed us that we just had to wait for the paperwork to be processed. She would notify us separately when it was done.Lorenzo nodded. He waited for everyone to leave before asking if I could stay for a few more minutes.I glanced at the time. "Va bene."Lorenzo grabbed the paper bag that had been sitting next to him. Instead of handing it to me, he asked me to take a peek. There was a small, gray blanket in the bag. Our child had just reached ten weeks old when I bought it. I remembered telling the sales assistant that I didn't know whether we were having a boy or a girl. Lorenzo had picked out two different-colored blankets, but I had put one

Nora helped me move into my new home. The apartment didn't have an elevator. Fortunately, I only had to climb up half a flight of stairs. There was a maple tree outside the window.I had just placed the photo frame down when I received a call from Irene."Lorenzo wants to send a set of furniture to you. He told his lawyer to ask you first. He hasn't made any arrangements yet," she said."No need," I replied. "I've already bought everything."I looked at the newly built bed that didn't have any bedsheets yet. I grabbed my phone and snapped a picture, sending it to Irene. "Tell him that I'm not lacking anything."The next day, Irene showed up with another document.Lorenzo was willing to continue paying my medical bills even after our divorce and wanted to set up a separate fund for it. After I read through the terms, I asked Irene if the current procedures would be affected if I rejected his offer."No," she said. "You can just deal with this according to the scope that we've ve

"The Don will clarify the situation in front of everyone. Everyone who was involved in the internal investigation will be present."I pressed my phone between my ear and shoulder as I drew a circle around a station on the map. "Send the document to Irene. I don't need to be there.""The Don hopes that you can personally hear his statement, Mrs. Corsi.""Please call me Clara."The man on the other end of the line paused for a moment before correcting himself. "Please consider his request, Ms. Clara."I rejected him again, saying, "I'm working that day. He doesn't need to wait for me if he wants to clarify the situation."A few days later, Irene delivered the meeting log to me. Lorenzo first distributed the results of the investigation to the people who were present, requesting that they correct the previous record.Isabella placed the report down after she flipped through two pages. "Since you've already found out the truth, you could have resolved this privately. There's already

I agreed to show up because I wanted to finalize the following procedures as soon as possible.Lorenzo arrived half an hour earlier than the agreed time. A glass of water sat untouched before him. He rose to his feet when he noticed me, causing his chair to scrape against the floor. "You've lost weight," he said.I shrugged off my coat and sat next to Irene. "Let's begin."Lorenzo pulled out a new access card from his briefcase. Pushing it toward me, he said, "I've restored all of your access in the house. No one will ever stop you again."Irene looked at me. When I shook my head, she pushed the card back to him.Lorenzo didn't retract his hand. "I've already investigated Viviana. She lied. I shouldn't have—""You're the one who took that photo," I said, interrupting him. "You knew that I didn't let anyone in, and you knew that my card was in my bag.""I only temporarily suspended your access for safety reasons.""Then why was I the only one whose access was suspended?"Lorenz

"The client just confirmed the group booking that you handled on my behalf yesterday," Nora said. "Have you done this before?""I've handled bookings and arranged trips in the past," I replied. In the past, I was always the one who handled the dozens of guests whenever the family hosted a banquet, including their arrival, food restrictions, and accommodations.Nora pointed downstairs and said, "My sister is going back to school next month. Do you want to try taking charge of the front desk in the afternoons?"She then wrote down the working hours and salary and showed me the details. "There are other people who are in charge of moving the luggage and cleaning. You just have to handle the reservations and check-ins."We agreed to a three-day trial. On the first afternoon, a couple with a child showed up with the wrong reservation date. The wife scrolled through her email as she stood at the front desk while the husband constantly asked if we were willing to give them another guest
