Chapter 2

作者: Curly Bunny
Before I was discharged from the hospital, I asked Lorenzo for one favor. "I want to light a candle for our child in the church."

He readily agreed and even personally instructed the housekeeper to prepare a small white candle.

I cut a short strip of white ribbon before I headed over to the church, looping it around the candlestick. I had initially planned to wrap a baby's gift box with the ribbon. The rest of it was at home.

Lorenzo tied the ribbon for me, asking me if it looked alright.

I nodded and handed him the candlestick, saying, "Let's hold the candlestick together during the prayer recital."

"Va bene," he replied, personally placing the candlestick next to the altar.

However, when the ceremony began, the white candle had disappeared. Six black-and-white portraits were placed in the front row of the church. There were also only six names on the head priest's prayer list.

I looked for the priest who was in charge of the ceremony. He looked a little troubled as he pointed at a side door and said, "Mr. Corsi asked to have the prayer recital for the unborn child in the private chapel, Mrs. Corsi."

I heard Lorenzo's Madre, Isabella Pasquini's voice coming through the door that had been left ajar.

"Over 20 important guests will be present at the ceremony tonight. Everyone is talking about how Lorenzo saved Viviana first. Do you want the reporters to find out that he abandoned his pregnant Donna by announcing that we will be hosting a ceremony for his child?" she demanded.

"It's all my fault," Viviana mumbled. "You can remove me from the speech segment if Clara minds."

"No one is going to remove you," Lorenzo said. "I will explain the situation about the child to Clara."

"You don't have to explain," I said as I walked into the room. "You promised me."

A hint of panic flickered across Lorenzo's face when he turned to look at me. "We can light the candle in the private chapel too, Clara. It's quieter there. I will accompany you."

"Why can everyone pray for the bodyguards who sacrificed their lives, but we have to hide when praying for our child?" I countered.

Isabella frowned. "Everyone's upset that you lost your child, but you shouldn't let a private matter turn into a family scandal."

"That's enough, Mamma," Lorenzo said, moving to stand in front of her.

I assumed that he had finally changed his mind, but instead, he grabbed my hand and said, "Give me some time. Once the dust has settled, I will host a grand farewell ceremony for our child."

"When?" I asked.

Lorenzo couldn't answer my question.

The church bell rang, prompting the guests outside to rise.

Lorenzo let go of my hand and hurried to the front row. Viviana trailed behind him, grabbing the script for the speech on his behalf as the Consigliere.

took an unused candle from the side of the altar, lit it, and placed it on the windowsill at the very back. The flame flickered for a split second before burning steadily.

The priest approached me from the front row, asking in a low voice if I wanted to wait for Lorenzo.

I turned to glance at Lorenzo. He was leaning down and listening to Isabella. Viviana was standing next to them. The priest raised his hand to catch his attention. He noticed and nodded in our direction, but he made no move to come over.

I waited until the priest flipped open his book and closed it again, saying, "Go ahead. We don't have to wait anymore."

I clasped my hands beside the candle and listened to the prayer meant for Lorenzo and me.

…

After the ceremony was over, Lorenzo sought me out in the empty church. "I've told the priest to prepare the private chapel," he said.

"No need. I've already sent off our child."

Lorenzo's eyes suddenly reddened as he stared at the candle that was nearly extinguished. He reached out to pull me into his arms, but I dodged away from his touch.

"Will you allow me to pay respects to our child if I'm no longer 'Mrs. Corsi' one day?" I asked.

"You will always be my wife," he answered without hesitation.

I didn't say another word.

…

I received a message from Irene during the car ride home.

"I've verified the assets and preserved your pre-marriage savings and income. You won't have to use any of the Corsi family's accounts when you leave."

"Proceed according to plan," I replied.

There were only five days left until my departure.

"It's been ten whole days. If you don't come out right now, I'm going to break your door down," Nora exclaimed.I smiled as I showed her my passport. My destination was Florenzo. When Nora asked me to bring back some chocolate for her, I told her to give me a list. I didn't want her to only recall what she wanted when I was already at the airport.Irene invited me out for coffee before I left, handing over the last few documents that belonged to me. A postcard that Papa sent me in the past was among the documents. He had written down the names of the streets that he had strolled along in his youth on the back."They found it in an old book that you left behind in the mansion," she said.I smoothed out the folded edges with my fingers and slipped it into my bag.Irene hesitated for a moment before asking if I was willing to meet Lorenzo. "He's here to sign another handover document. We were supposed to meet after you left, but the driver told me that he's already here.""It's alr

Lorenzo didn't ask me if I wanted to reconsider my decision when his lawyer handed the document to me. His hand that was pressed against the paper trembled slightly when he penned his signature on the last page, causing the ink to smear slightly.I slipped my own copy of the document into an envelope. After Irene checked everything, she informed us that we just had to wait for the paperwork to be processed. She would notify us separately when it was done.Lorenzo nodded. He waited for everyone to leave before asking if I could stay for a few more minutes.I glanced at the time. "Va bene."Lorenzo grabbed the paper bag that had been sitting next to him. Instead of handing it to me, he asked me to take a peek. There was a small, gray blanket in the bag. Our child had just reached ten weeks old when I bought it. I remembered telling the sales assistant that I didn't know whether we were having a boy or a girl. Lorenzo had picked out two different-colored blankets, but I had put one

Nora helped me move into my new home. The apartment didn't have an elevator. Fortunately, I only had to climb up half a flight of stairs. There was a maple tree outside the window.I had just placed the photo frame down when I received a call from Irene."Lorenzo wants to send a set of furniture to you. He told his lawyer to ask you first. He hasn't made any arrangements yet," she said."No need," I replied. "I've already bought everything."I looked at the newly built bed that didn't have any bedsheets yet. I grabbed my phone and snapped a picture, sending it to Irene. "Tell him that I'm not lacking anything."The next day, Irene showed up with another document.Lorenzo was willing to continue paying my medical bills even after our divorce and wanted to set up a separate fund for it. After I read through the terms, I asked Irene if the current procedures would be affected if I rejected his offer."No," she said. "You can just deal with this according to the scope that we've ve

"The Don will clarify the situation in front of everyone. Everyone who was involved in the internal investigation will be present."I pressed my phone between my ear and shoulder as I drew a circle around a station on the map. "Send the document to Irene. I don't need to be there.""The Don hopes that you can personally hear his statement, Mrs. Corsi.""Please call me Clara."The man on the other end of the line paused for a moment before correcting himself. "Please consider his request, Ms. Clara."I rejected him again, saying, "I'm working that day. He doesn't need to wait for me if he wants to clarify the situation."A few days later, Irene delivered the meeting log to me. Lorenzo first distributed the results of the investigation to the people who were present, requesting that they correct the previous record.Isabella placed the report down after she flipped through two pages. "Since you've already found out the truth, you could have resolved this privately. There's already

I agreed to show up because I wanted to finalize the following procedures as soon as possible.Lorenzo arrived half an hour earlier than the agreed time. A glass of water sat untouched before him. He rose to his feet when he noticed me, causing his chair to scrape against the floor. "You've lost weight," he said.I shrugged off my coat and sat next to Irene. "Let's begin."Lorenzo pulled out a new access card from his briefcase. Pushing it toward me, he said, "I've restored all of your access in the house. No one will ever stop you again."Irene looked at me. When I shook my head, she pushed the card back to him.Lorenzo didn't retract his hand. "I've already investigated Viviana. She lied. I shouldn't have—""You're the one who took that photo," I said, interrupting him. "You knew that I didn't let anyone in, and you knew that my card was in my bag.""I only temporarily suspended your access for safety reasons.""Then why was I the only one whose access was suspended?"Lorenz

"The client just confirmed the group booking that you handled on my behalf yesterday," Nora said. "Have you done this before?""I've handled bookings and arranged trips in the past," I replied. In the past, I was always the one who handled the dozens of guests whenever the family hosted a banquet, including their arrival, food restrictions, and accommodations.Nora pointed downstairs and said, "My sister is going back to school next month. Do you want to try taking charge of the front desk in the afternoons?"She then wrote down the working hours and salary and showed me the details. "There are other people who are in charge of moving the luggage and cleaning. You just have to handle the reservations and check-ins."We agreed to a three-day trial. On the first afternoon, a couple with a child showed up with the wrong reservation date. The wife scrolled through her email as she stood at the front desk while the husband constantly asked if we were willing to give them another guest
