Chapter 1

My best friend, Sharon, called me the day before she left the country.

I heard the frantic sound of packing on the other end of the line, mixed with her hurried voice. “Wynne! Help! I’m flying to New Zedland for work the day after tomorrow, and my husband’s not home either. Can you look after my nephew for a few days? It’ll be just one week! I’ll treat you to the most expensive sushi in town once I’m back!”

She was married to a dragon shifter.

Their family had many different branches, and a few years ago, they arranged for a little dragon cub to be raised in her home. She was the one taking care of him most of the time.

I agreed without even thinking.

Who could say no to a dragon cub?!

However, Sharon then added, “Oh, right. I should warn you. This kid’s been spoiled at home, so his temper isn’t great. He can be a bit fierce sometimes, so don’t take it personally. He’s the type of guy who acts tough but is really soft-hearted underneath. Just coax him a little, and he’ll be fine.”

I immediately agreed. “Don’t worry. I’m great with kids!”

She gave a doubtful hum on the other end, probably remembering how I once scared her cat so badly that it hid under the bed for three days.

Still, she did not have any other choice.

After hanging up, I changed my clothes and went to wait at the entrance of her neighborhood.

She told me the little cub’s training at a nearby shifters’ martial arts hall would be finished at 4:30 PM, so I should just pick him up there.

The martial arts hall was on a commercial street east of the complex. I arrived early and waited at a milk tea shop across the street.

I could see the entrance clearly from the shop’s window.

At 4:30 PM sharp, the young shifters started coming out one after another.

They all wore matching black training uniforms and looked about four or five years old.

However, once they took human form, they looked no different from ordinary people. One could not even tell they were a different species at all.

All I had ever seen of the little cub was from a video call. He was a tiny, fluffy golden ball. I could not even make out his exact features.

I stood at the entrance of the martial arts hall, a drink in hand, like a patient hunter waiting for a dragon cub.

There were a lot of parents picking up their kids. A flurry of luxury cars and nannies surrounded us.

I stood among them in my branded puffer jacket, holding a five-dollar lemon drink, looking extremely out of place.

After a while, the crowd thinned out.

I suddenly felt a gaze on me.

I turned around and met a pair of bright golden eyes.

A young boy stood under the martial arts hall’s entrance, staring at me.

I had found him!

I felt a spark of joy and was just about to walk over when he turned away, expressionless, and walked in the opposite direction.

A black nanny car was parked by the curb. The door opened, and someone in uniform opened the car door.

The boy got in without looking back.

I was stunned.

I probably had the wrong guy.

I awkwardly drew back and kept waiting.

Another ten minutes passed. The place was almost empty.

Even the instructors started turning off the lights and locking the doors.

Just as I was about to call Sharon in panic, I caught a glimpse of movement from the side alley.

A small figure was leaning against the wall with a black training bag slung across his back, glancing at me coldly.

He had golden eyes as well, but his were brighter and deeper, like melted gold into them.

The little guy wore a black training uniform, his collar zipped all the way up. He gave off an unapproachable, aloof vibe.

He did not walk toward the crowd of parents before. Instead, he stayed in the alley like he had no intention of being picked up at all.

It had to be him.

I quickly walked over, pulled out my phone, and showed him a photo of me and Sharon together.

“Hi! Look, this is your aunt. I’m her friend, Wynne. I’ll be taking care of you for the next few days!”

The kid glanced at my phone.

Then, he looked up and said coldly, “I don’t know you.”

He turned around to leave.

I was startled for a moment and quickly chased after him. “Hey, don’t go! Your aunt really asked me to pick you up. You can call her to confirm—”

“I said I don’t know you.”

He did not even look back, walking quickly.

I was shocked.

Sharon had not lied.

He really did have a bad temper.

What came after that, in truth, was rather simple. The Dragon Emperor’s courting style was clumsy but sincere. He did not know how to say sweet words, so he just came over and cooked every day.He was not good at romance, so he upgraded my apartment’s heating system into a dragon clan thermal barrier. From then on, it stayed perfectly warm in winter and cool in summer, and no more repairs were needed. He was not expressive, but every time he came, he brought something.Sometimes, it was a drawing Lucien had made. Sometimes, it was a bouquet of flowers from somewhere unknown. Sometimes it was nothing at all except him standing at the door, looking at me, quietly saying, “I came to see you.”When Sharon found out about it, she was in shock for three straight days, then immediately switched into full matchmaking mode.“Wynne, listen to me. He’s the Dragon Emperor. The Dragon Emperor! What are you hesitating for?!”“I’m not hesitating…”“Then say yes already!”“He hasn’t official

The change happened on a rainy night. That day, Aurelius arrived later than usual. By the time he knocked on the door, heavy rain was already pouring outside. When I opened it, he was standing in the hallway, his long coat half-soaked. A few strands of his golden hair were wet too, clinging to the side of his face. However, his expression remained unchanged, as though being caught in the rain meant nothing at all.“Come in. Let me get a towel for you.”I turned to grab one from the bathroom. By the time I came back, he had already changed into slippers and was standing in the entryway.I handed him the towel. He took it, but instead of using it on himself, he glanced at my shoulder. “You’re wet too.”I looked down. A little rain had splashed onto my shoulder when I opened the door. Before I could react, he had already draped the towel over it.The movement was so natural that it felt rehearsed.I froze for a moment. He also froze for a moment, as though only then realizing

However, the floating comments’ predictions kept getting more accurate.Aurelius started coming more and more often, from once a week to three times a week, and eventually, almost every other day.Sometimes, he came with Lucien, but sometimes, he came alone. When Lucien was with him, the little guy would immediately rush into my arms, his tail wrapping tightly around my wrist. Then, he would turn back and shoot his brother a smug little look, his golden eyes practically screaming that I was his.Aurelius would watch all of this with a blank expression and say with a calm voice, “Lucien. Sit properly.”The little guy would huff but still sit down obediently. His tail, however, did not let go of me.When Aurelius came alone, the atmosphere was completely different. It was quieter and more comfortable. He would sit on the sofa, reading, while I cooked in the kitchen. Occasionally, I would call out, “Pass me a plate,” and he would set his book down and walk over without a word.He

The ribs turned out perfectly that day.Aurelius took a bite and commented with a straight face, “Not bad.”However, I noticed that he packed up every last bit of the leftovers and took them home. The next day, Lucien sent me a voice message. Aurelius had apparently arranged a communication device for him so we could stay in touch more easily. The little guy sounded so excited that his voice cracked. “Wynne! My brother’s ribs taste exactly like yours!”I smiled and sent back a reply.“Have your brother make them for you more often.”A few seconds later, another voice message came through. This one was much quieter, carrying a hint of grievance. “But I still want yours.”My heart melted instantly. After that, Aurelius started showing up more and more often. At first, he claimed he was coming to learn cooking. After mastering braised ribs, he learned how to make steamed fish. After steamed fish came tomato soup. The problem was that my cooking skills were pretty limited.I

After Lucien left, life gradually returned to normal. The heater was fixed, and the new space heater was still around. The apartment stayed warm and cozy. However, whenever I lay in bed at night, my ankle felt strangely lonely, as if something were missing.Habits really were a terrifying thing.I shook my head and pushed the thought away.Days passed.I thought that bizarre chapter of my life was over, but one evening a week later, the doorbell suddenly rang.I went to answer it.Standing outside was the Dragon Emperor, Aurelius. There were no bodyguards and attendants. It was just him.His long golden hair was still tied back, and he wore a dark gray cashmere coat. His presence felt much more restrained than before. He almost looked like an ordinary man.If you could ignore his golden-slitted pupils.I was startled for a moment. “Mr. Vale?”He gave me a small nod and replied in a calm tone, “Lucien sent me.”“What?”“He said your braised ribs were good. He told me to c

On the seventh day, Sharon came back early. The moment she stepped through the door, so many emotions were plastered on her face that she looked like a one-woman play.“Let me see him! Let me see him! What does the Dragon Emperor’s little brother look like?!”Lucien was sitting on the sofa, reading a picture book. He lifted his head when he heard Sharon’s voice, swept his golden-slitted pupils over her expressionlessly for a few seconds, then went back to reading. He was basically screaming, ‘Leave me alone!’Sharon leaned in, trying to talk to him, but the little guy did not even look up. Instead, his tail slipped out from under the blanket and flicked lightly toward me.She immediately understood and turned to me. “Wynne, you really did it. In just one week, you completely got a dragon cub wrapped around your finger.”I gave her a guilty laugh. She lowered her voice. “Do you even know how precious a dragon’s tail is? That’s their most vulnerable spot. Wrapping it around som
