Chapter 2

Author: Popcorn Pop
I did not give up.

After all, Sharon had repeatedly warned me that this kid was tough on the outside, but soft on the inside. She told me not to be intimidated by him.

I jogged after him. I did not try to grab him as I kept a two-step distance between us.

After walking for a while, the little guy finally realized I was still behind him. He stopped and turned around, glaring at me. “How long are you going to keep following me?”

His golden-slitted pupils narrowed slightly, carrying a hint of aggression.

Anyone else might have backed off at that look.

However, I had a strange habit. The fiercer something small was, the more adorable I found it.

I crouched down to his eye level, softening my tone. “Tell me, where are you planning to go? It’s getting dark, and it’s cold outside. I can’t let you wander around alone.”

He pressed his lips together and said nothing.

A gust of wind blew past, and he instinctively shrank his neck, tucking his hands into his pockets.

I noticed his fingertips were a little red, probably from the cold.

Sharon had mentioned before that dragon shifters had naturally high body temperatures, but cubs could not regulate themselves well yet. They easily felt cold.

After pondering for a moment, I took off my gloves and held them out. “Here, put these on first. If your hands get frostbitten, your aunt’s going to be heartbroken when she gets back.”

He stared at the gloves for a couple of seconds but did not take them.

However, he did not leave either.

I simply pushed them into his hands. “Put them on. Be good.”

His eyelashes trembled slightly as he looked down at the gloves, which were still warm from my hands. He stayed silent for a long time.

Slowly, he finally put them on.

They were too big for him, the fingertips hanging loose and floppy.

He did not say a word.

I seized the moment. “Shall we go? My place has heating, and there’s food too. It’s better than standing out here.”

His gaze lingered on my face for a moment, like he was trying to figure me out.

Finally, he turned his head away and muttered, “Let’s go.”

I secretly gave myself a thumbs-up in my head.

Got him!

On the way back, I texted Sharon: [Got him! You can fly off in peace!]

She did not reply. She was probably already boarding.

The little guy walked beside me, keeping a half-arm’s distance the whole time. He did not speak or look at me.

Nevertheless, I noticed he never once took off the gloves.

When we got home, he stood at the entrance, expressionless, scanning the place.

It was just a one-bedroom apartment, not big by any means, but it was tidy enough.

His gaze eventually landed on a box of snacks in the corner of the living room. Something flickered in his eyes, but he quickly looked away.

Pretending not to notice, I asked, “Hungry?”

It was dinnertime.

After a brief pause, he replied stiffly, “Whatever.”

I mentally translated what he said. He was hungry, but he was too proud to say it.

“All right. Watch me work my magic.”

To be honest, I did not really know how to cook.

Before Sharon got married, we shared an apartment. She was the one who cooked, while all I did was enjoy the meal. After she moved out, I survived on takeout for two whole years. However, one night, my order came three hours late. I was so hungry I started pacing around the living room, and in a fit of rage, I downloaded a cooking app.

That was the beginning of everything.

I had experienced my fair share of failures, but I could now manage a few decent dishes.

I rolled up my sleeves and headed into the kitchen. I prepared braised pork ribs, steamed sea bass, garlic-roasted broccoli, braised beef, and some tomato soup.

By the time I brought everything out, the little guy was already seated at the table.

He did not say anything, but his golden eyes were locked onto the ribs. His Adam's apple bobbed unconsciously.

I suppressed a laugh and put two of the biggest pieces on his plate. “Come on. Don’t be shy.”

He lowered his gaze and whispered, “Thank you.”

His voice was so soft it was almost a hum.

Then, he started eating. He ate slowly and with seriousness.

Halfway through, two small golden dragon horns quietly started to poke out from his head, glowing softly under the light.

I stared at them, my hands itching.

I held back for three seconds.

My resolve soon broke.

While he was focused on enjoying the pork ribs, I reached out and gently poked one of his horn tips.

It was warm and smooth like jade.

The little guy snapped his head up.

With his cheeks puffed out and his dragon horns slightly flushed red, he looked completely unthreatening. If anything, he was kind of adorable.

I cleared my throat and casually added another piece of ribs to his bowl. “Be good and eat more. You’re growing.”

He stared at me for a few seconds, but he did not argue and went back to eating in silence.

His dragon horns stayed up all the way throughout dinner.

What came after that, in truth, was rather simple. The Dragon Emperor’s courting style was clumsy but sincere. He did not know how to say sweet words, so he just came over and cooked every day.He was not good at romance, so he upgraded my apartment’s heating system into a dragon clan thermal barrier. From then on, it stayed perfectly warm in winter and cool in summer, and no more repairs were needed. He was not expressive, but every time he came, he brought something.Sometimes, it was a drawing Lucien had made. Sometimes, it was a bouquet of flowers from somewhere unknown. Sometimes it was nothing at all except him standing at the door, looking at me, quietly saying, “I came to see you.”When Sharon found out about it, she was in shock for three straight days, then immediately switched into full matchmaking mode.“Wynne, listen to me. He’s the Dragon Emperor. The Dragon Emperor! What are you hesitating for?!”“I’m not hesitating…”“Then say yes already!”“He hasn’t official

The change happened on a rainy night. That day, Aurelius arrived later than usual. By the time he knocked on the door, heavy rain was already pouring outside. When I opened it, he was standing in the hallway, his long coat half-soaked. A few strands of his golden hair were wet too, clinging to the side of his face. However, his expression remained unchanged, as though being caught in the rain meant nothing at all.“Come in. Let me get a towel for you.”I turned to grab one from the bathroom. By the time I came back, he had already changed into slippers and was standing in the entryway.I handed him the towel. He took it, but instead of using it on himself, he glanced at my shoulder. “You’re wet too.”I looked down. A little rain had splashed onto my shoulder when I opened the door. Before I could react, he had already draped the towel over it.The movement was so natural that it felt rehearsed.I froze for a moment. He also froze for a moment, as though only then realizing

However, the floating comments’ predictions kept getting more accurate.Aurelius started coming more and more often, from once a week to three times a week, and eventually, almost every other day.Sometimes, he came with Lucien, but sometimes, he came alone. When Lucien was with him, the little guy would immediately rush into my arms, his tail wrapping tightly around my wrist. Then, he would turn back and shoot his brother a smug little look, his golden eyes practically screaming that I was his.Aurelius would watch all of this with a blank expression and say with a calm voice, “Lucien. Sit properly.”The little guy would huff but still sit down obediently. His tail, however, did not let go of me.When Aurelius came alone, the atmosphere was completely different. It was quieter and more comfortable. He would sit on the sofa, reading, while I cooked in the kitchen. Occasionally, I would call out, “Pass me a plate,” and he would set his book down and walk over without a word.He

The ribs turned out perfectly that day.Aurelius took a bite and commented with a straight face, “Not bad.”However, I noticed that he packed up every last bit of the leftovers and took them home. The next day, Lucien sent me a voice message. Aurelius had apparently arranged a communication device for him so we could stay in touch more easily. The little guy sounded so excited that his voice cracked. “Wynne! My brother’s ribs taste exactly like yours!”I smiled and sent back a reply.“Have your brother make them for you more often.”A few seconds later, another voice message came through. This one was much quieter, carrying a hint of grievance. “But I still want yours.”My heart melted instantly. After that, Aurelius started showing up more and more often. At first, he claimed he was coming to learn cooking. After mastering braised ribs, he learned how to make steamed fish. After steamed fish came tomato soup. The problem was that my cooking skills were pretty limited.I

After Lucien left, life gradually returned to normal. The heater was fixed, and the new space heater was still around. The apartment stayed warm and cozy. However, whenever I lay in bed at night, my ankle felt strangely lonely, as if something were missing.Habits really were a terrifying thing.I shook my head and pushed the thought away.Days passed.I thought that bizarre chapter of my life was over, but one evening a week later, the doorbell suddenly rang.I went to answer it.Standing outside was the Dragon Emperor, Aurelius. There were no bodyguards and attendants. It was just him.His long golden hair was still tied back, and he wore a dark gray cashmere coat. His presence felt much more restrained than before. He almost looked like an ordinary man.If you could ignore his golden-slitted pupils.I was startled for a moment. “Mr. Vale?”He gave me a small nod and replied in a calm tone, “Lucien sent me.”“What?”“He said your braised ribs were good. On the seventh day, Sharon came back early. The moment she stepped through the door, so many emotions were plastered on her face that she looked like a one-woman play.“Let me see him! Let me see him! What does the Dragon Emperor’s little brother look like?!”Lucien was sitting on the sofa, reading a picture book. He lifted his head when he heard Sharon’s voice, swept his golden-slitted pupils over her expressionlessly for a few seconds, then went back to reading. He was basically screaming, ‘Leave me alone!’Sharon leaned in, trying to talk to him, but the little guy did not even look up. Instead, his tail slipped out from under the blanket and flicked lightly toward me.She immediately understood and turned to me. “Wynne, you really did it. In just one week, you completely got a dragon cub wrapped around your finger.”I gave her a guilty laugh. She lowered her voice. “Do you even know how precious a dragon’s tail is? That’s their most vulnerable spot. Wrapping it around som
