Aria's POV

I went to Zaron again that morning.

Not with urgency this time. The tower signal had been sent before dawn and if Drex received it he would turn back before he crossed the outer border. The immediate crisis had a response in motion.

This was something different.

I knocked on the study door with three short knocks the way Drex always did.

The door opened.

Zaron looked at me.

"Senna," I said. "She talked."

He stepped back from the door.

I came in. I told him everything — the confession

Aria's POVZaron was at the bottom of the stairs. Not pacing. Not moving. Simply standing exactly where we had left him with his hands clasped behind his back and his gold eyes finding me the moment I came through the door.He looked at me for one second. Then he crossed the room.He did not say anything. He simply put his hand against my face the same gesture from the study, palm against my cheek, warm and present and chosen and looked at me with those gold eyes that were doing nothing but looking."It is done," I said."Yes," he said. "I felt it.""Through the bond," I said."Through the palace," he said. "Through the stone. Through everything." He held my gaze. "The whole building changed when it happened. Every candle in every corridor went out for one second and came back burning differently."I looked at the candles in the underground room.He was right. The lig

  • The Dragon King's Human Mate   Chapter 60: The Last Flame

Aria's POVThe domain felt different with my mother beside me.Not larger. Not more significant than it had been the first time. Something more specific than either of those — the feeling of a space recognizing that it finally had everyone it had been waiting for. The complete configuration. Every piece present.Thessaly stood in the gold light with her hands folded over her walking stick and the specific stillness of someone who has arrived at the end of something enormous and is simply here. Present. Done with the managing."Tell me what happens now," I said."You already know," she said."Tell me anyway," I said. "Clearly. No withholding."She was quiet for a moment. Then she said:"The part of Eiravel preserved in the Flame Keeper bloodline has been carried for three hundred years. Passed from mother to daughter, generation to generation, without any of them knowing what they were carrying." She pau

  • The Dragon King's Human Mate   Chapter 59: The Door Again

Aria's POVThe underground room was not as we had left it.I knew the moment we came down the stairs. Not from anything visible the candles were still burning, the shelves were undisturbed, the long tables exactly as they had been. But the quality of the air was different. Charged in the specific way of a space where something has recently been present that is not currently present but has left evidence of itself in the atmosphere the way a person leaves warmth in a chair they have just vacated.Something had been here.Something had left.Zaron stopped at the bottom of the stairs. My mother stopped beside me.We all looked at the north wall. The door was open. Not wide a crack. The same crack it had been when we first discovered it. The specific inch of darkness beyond it that was not darkness but depth. But different from before. Before the domain the door had carried the

  • The Dragon King's Human Mate   Chapter 58

Aria's POVMy mother talked for a long time. Not the way someone talks when they have rehearsed the way someone talks when they have been silent for too long and the silence has finally been given permission to end. Words finding their shape in real time. Some of them certain. Some of them searching.I listened to all of it.She told me about my grandmother.A woman named Saoirse who had lived in the eastern settlements and had carried the warmth in her blood the way all the women before her had carried it quietly, carefully, without fully understanding what it was. Saoirse had known enough to be afraid. Had known enough to keep moving, to keep the family unremarkable, to never stay anywhere long enough for the wrong kind of attention to find them. She had passed one thing down with absolute precision. The words. You are more than they know, my love.Said to my mother the way my mother had said them to

  • The Dragon King's Human Mate   Chapter 57: You Are More Than They Know

Aria's POVShe was standing at the window. Her back to the door. Her shoulders carrying the specific quality of someone who has been holding themselves together for a very long time and has decided that the next few minutes will require everything they have left. She was smaller than I remembered.Or perhaps I had simply grown. The hair that I had always reconstructed from memory in pieces was grey now at the temples threaded through the dark the way silver threads through something that was once entirely one color and has simply lived long enough to become two. Her hands were clasped before her. Her posture was straight in the way of someone who had decided, sometime in the last twelve years, that how you stood was the one thing you could always control. She heard the door. She turned. And I saw her face. The curve of the smile that I had been reconstructing from memory in pieces for twelve years there. T

  • The Dragon King's Human Mate   Chapter 56: The Visitor

Zaron's POV I kept Vaeris waiting for three hours before I sent for him.Not deliberately. Or rather deliberately, but not pettily. Three hours was the time it took to review forty years of council records, cross-reference Drex's intelligence on the network's structure, and determine with reasonable precision what Vaeris had actually done versus what he had sanctioned others to do versus what had been done above him without his knowledge. The picture that emerged was complicated. He had done real damage. He had also been used in ways he did not know he had been used. Both things were true. Both required addressing.I sent for him.He came in differently from how he had ever entered a room before. No smile. No practiced ease. He simply walked in.Sat down across from me.Looked at me directly."You have read the records," he said."Yes," I said
