Night was falling.

Inside the Office of Imperial Attendance, rows of green-headed selection tablets lay neatly on a lacquered tray.

Chief Eunuch Li Dequan carried the tray to the imperial desk and bowed.

"Your Majesty, it is time."

The study was silent except for the soft crackle of candlelight.

Seated behind the desk, Emperor Xiao Heng continued reading the memorial in his hand without even glancing up. "Take them away."

"Yes, Your Majesty." Li Dequan wasn't surprised.

For three years, the answer had never changed.

The selection tablets existed only because court etiquette demanded they exist.

The emperor had never once touched them.

The eunuchs quietly carried the tray away.

A short while later, palace lanterns lit the stone paths as the imperial procession left the study.

There was only one destination—Chengqian Palace.

---

Chengqian Palace was the closest palace to Qianqing Palace, where the emperor resided, and it was exceptionally splendid. It had always been reserved for the emperor's favored consorts, so that he could visit them easily whenever he wished.

Warm candlelight spilled through the window.

Su Qingyuan sat by the couch with a book in her lap. A plate of osmanthus cakes rested beside her, untouched.

The door opened softly. She didn't look up. "You're late."

Her voice carried the easy familiarity of someone greeting the person she had always been waiting for.

Xiao Heng removed his cloak and handed it to a servant before waving everyone away.

The doors quietly closed.

Now there were only the two of them.

"Today's morning session ran long."

She finally looked up. "What happened this time? Did someone upset you again?"

"Yeah."

She blinked. "Who?"

"All the officials. Every last one of them!"

A smile escaped her lips. "So… all of them bullied you today?"

"They wish!"

She laughed.

The sound of her laughter eased every trace of exhaustion from his face. He crossed the room and, without asking, lifted the book from her hands.

"Reading again?"

"I was."

"Not anymore."

She reached for it. "Give it back."

Instead of returning it, he simply raised it higher. "You've been reading ever since I walked in."

"I was reading while waiting for you."

"That's still reading. You didn't even look at me. No way!"

She stood, stretching to take it from him.

Unfortunately for her, he was much taller.

No matter how she reached, the book remained just beyond her fingertips.

"Xiao Heng." There was a warning in her voice.

"Hm?"

"Are you two years old?"

His smile grew wider. "Say my name again. I haven't heard you say it enough today."

She folded her arms. "So this is your excuse? Nice try."

She sighed dramatically. "I'm done playing."

Turning away, she sat back down and poured herself a cup of tea.

Seeing that she truly intended to ignore him, Xiao Heng immediately surrendered.

He placed the book back into her hands and sat beside her. "I was teasing."

"I noticed."

"Are you angry?"

She took a slow sip of tea. "I'm considering it."

"And how do I persuade you otherwise?"

She glanced toward the covered food box beside him. "I accept bribes."

He chuckled. "I came prepared."

Opening the box, he revealed a plate of freshly made osmanthus cakes.

"You said the last batch was too sweet, so I had the kitchen make these with less sugar."

Her fingers paused.

She had mentioned that only once.

He had remembered.

Without saying anything, she picked up one of the cakes and held it toward him.

"For your efforts."

He leaned forward obediently and took a bite.

"It tastes better when you feed me."

She rolled her eyes. "You really are impossible."

"But you still like me."

"I tolerate you."

"I'll take that."

She couldn't help laughing again.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

The silence between them never felt awkward.

After a while, Xiao Heng leaned back against the couch and closed his eyes.

"So?"

"So?"

"Those officials?"

He sighed. "They're asking me to choose the tablets again."

"They always do."

"They also want me to visit the other palaces."

"And?"

He opened one eye and looked at her. "I'm here, aren't I?"

She smiled helplessly. "They're going to blame me again."

"They already do."

"They'll say I'm bewitching the emperor."

"They've been saying that for years."

She reached over and gently brushed a loose strand of hair from his forehead. "Doesn't it bother you?"

He caught her hand and intertwined their fingers. "As long as I'm with you… let them talk."

She looked at him quietly.

There was no emperor here.

No noble consort.

No court etiquette.

Only Xiao Heng.

Only Su Qingyuan.

Outside, the palace remained bound by endless rules.

Inside Chengqian Palace…

they belonged only to each other.

---

Meanwhile, in Zhaohua Palace—

Another porcelain teacup shattered against the floor.

"He went to her again?"

"Yes, Your Highness."

"And the selection tablets?"

"The Emperor… never looked at them."

Silence filled the hall.

She finally sneered. "How long can someone like that remain favored?"

---

Outside the palace walls, the court buzzed with whispered complaints. Inside Chengqian Palace, there were no rulers or subjects, no rules or etiquette. There was only a young man named Xiao Heng, and a woman he cherished above all else—and he still couldn't bear to let her go.

---

Note for readers: Green-headed tablets were wooden slips, each inscribed with a consort's personal name and formal title (e.g., Noble Consort Qing, etc.). The emperor used them to select which consort would share his bed that night.

  • The Emperor’s Only Consort   Chapter 8: The Beginning

The first pale light of dawn was just starting to seep through the windows of Chengqian Palace—thin, watery, the kind that made everything look washed out. Xiao Heng stood still while Qingyuan worked the jade belt around his waist, her fingers moving with quiet familiarity. She tugged the ends into place, then let her palm rest flat against his stomach for a moment. "You've lost weight," she said, not quite looking up. Her thumb brushed across the fabric, smoothing a crease that wasn't really there. "Have I?" "You have." She stepped back, tilted her head, squinted. Then she reached up and straightened his collar—left side, then right, then left again, just to be sure. She stepped back and gave him a slow once-over, chin lifted, her expression caught somewhere between amusement and approval: "Now you look like an emperor." Xiao Heng raised an eyebrow: "And what did I look like a moment ago?" Qingyuan held his gaze, her smile growing one heartbeat at a time: "My husband."

He carried her out of Phoenix Palace without a word. Not until they were well past the palace gates did Qingyuan tug lightly at his sleeve:“You can put me down now.” “No.” She looked up at him: “Xiao Heng.” He glanced down. “My sleeve’s wet,” she said. “Not my legs.” For the first time since leaving the banquet, the corner of his mouth lifted: “…Fine.” He set her down carefully. The moment her feet touched the ground, his hand found hers again. Qingyuan glanced at their joined hands and gave them a playful little swing: “Do you really need to hold my hand right now?” He didn’t even look at her: “Very.” She only smiled and let him have his way. Neither of them spoke all the way back to Chengqian Palace. Only after the doors closed behind them did Xiao Heng finally let go of her hand. He rested a hand lightly on her shoulder and guided her toward the couch: “Sit.” She sat, watching him with quiet amusement. “The outer robe.” His eyes fell to the damp edge

"Enough." Mingshu's voice cut through the hall. Finally, all quiet. "We're checking the records." She turned to Nanny Xu. "Go get—" Just then— A eunuch's voice from outside. "His Majesty has arrived." The hall went silent. Everyone stood up and turned toward the entrance. Xiao Heng stepped inside. Without sparing anyone else a glance, he walked straight to Su Qingyuan. "Qingyuan." She looked up and smiled. "You're early." "I was worried about you.” He raised one hand to cup her cheek, thumb brushing lightly over. The tray lurched sideways. The pot of scalding tea looked like it was about to spill all over Zhao, but somehow it swerved midair and headed straight for Su Qingyuan's face! A few people in the hall gasped. Zhao shot to her feet, completely forgetting herself, and let out a yelp—"Ahhh!" Su Qingyuan dodged to the side in the same instant. The hot water splashed past her shoulder and drenched the table between her and Zhao. The teacup hit the floor and shattered. The little maid dropped to her knees in terror, banging her head on the ground. "This servant deserves death! I deserve death!" Zhao caught her breath and quickly put on a concerned look, leaning toward Qingyuan. "Lady Su, you're not burned, are you?" Her voice was all sweetness, but the disappointment in her eyes was plain as day. Before Qingyuan could answer, Zhao turned to the maid. "Which palace are you from?" The girl was trembling all over, her voice hoarse. "I—I'm from… Chengqian Palace." The hall went

  • The Emperor’s Only Consort   Chapter 4: The Spring Tea Banquet

Phoenix Palace was filled with the fragrance of tea and blooming spring flowers. Soft conversations drifted through the grand hall as palace maids moved gracefully among the guests, replenishing teacups and arranging delicate pastries. At the head of the hall sat Empress Su Mingshu. To her right sat Consort Shen Yuyan, elegant and composed as always. Beside Shen was another seat—still empty. It belonged to Imperial Concubine Zhao Wanru. Next to it sat Lady Su Qingyuan. Across from them, on the Empress's left, sat Consort Ning Xinyue. Beside Consort Ning was another empty seat, reserved for Senior Noble Lady Qing Yao. At the end of the row sat Noble Lady Lin Ruozhi, the youngest among the ladies present. She held her teacup with both hands, too nervous to join the conversation. The banquet had not yet begun. The hall was peaceful. Then— A young palace maid hurried over to Nanny Xu and whispered. Nanny Xu stepped closer to the Empress and bowed. "Your Majesty.

  • The Emperor’s Only Consort   Chapter 3: The Invitation

The Palace of Phoenix was as dignified as ever. Morning light bathed the grand hall in a warm glow. Empress Su Mingshu sat before a stack of palace records, listening quietly as Nanny Xu reported the day's affairs. "Your Majesty. The invitations for tomorrow's Spring Tea Banquet have all been delivered." Mingshu nodded without looking up. "Has Chengqian Palace received one?" "Yes." Only then did she set down her brush. "Tell the Imperial Kitchen…" She paused for a moment. "…to prepare lotus pastries." Nanny Xu looked surprised. "Your Majesty?" Mingshu smiled faintly. "Qingyuan always preferred lotus over osmanthus. She used to complain the osmanthus cakes were too sweet." Nanny Xu lowered her head with a smile. "It has been years, yet Your Majesty still remembers." "How could I forget?" Mingshu looked toward the palace window. "When she was little… she would always steal the pastries from my plate." For just a moment… she wasn't the Empress. She was only an elder
