LORETTA

Never in this life would I think that Liam would be my knight. I never thought he would be the one to rescue me when I was in grave danger. He appeared like an angel when I was in trouble. The reason I could still breathe today was because of him. I owe him everything—my existence, my entirety, my all. He’d proven to me that he wasn’t a jerk. He was better. Better than Matthew in every way… Or maybe I was just deceiving myself one more time.

I stood in front of the police station, my eyes fixated on the large billboard at the top of the building. A lump clogged my throat, and something heavy blocked my chest. I couldn’t swallow or breathe. My body stiffened. I was scared.

The bastard who almost killed me was in there. And I was about to face him. I didn’t think I would be able to do that without shuddering in fear. The scenes of that deadly day rewound in my head, and it sent chills down my spine.

“Let’s go in,” Liam, who had gone to properly park the car, beckoned. He tucked

GENERALOnce they got home, Loretta descended from the car and waited for Liam at the elevator. Soon, he joined her.In the elevator, a deafening silence overwhelmed the atmosphere. Liam’s Adam’s apple bobbed while Loretta’s throat was dry and burning. Both of them found the silence awkward and uncomfortable, but they wouldn’t dare complain about it because they feared it could give the other person the wrong impression or comprehension.Seconds later, the elevator made a ding sound, breaking the silence that almost deafened the ears, and the door opened.A sigh crept out of Loretta’s lips, but it wasn’t that audible. She walked forward. She wanted to step out of the elevator, but at the same time, Liam also wanted to walk out, and they ended up bumping into each other.Loretta gasped and swiftly took a step backward. Her cheeks turned red, and she clutched her lower lip.“Umm… I… I’m sorry. After you,” he said, pointing at the exit. She didn’t say anything. She hurriedly strolled out

LORETTAOnce we left the police station, Liam and I didn’t say a word to each other. I just stared blankly. My head was packed with different thoughts. So many things were going on at once, and I didn’t even know which one to think about. Matthew was in there, locked up and punished. I didn’t know how many years he would be given by the judges. I just hoped that bastard would be forgotten in prison for everything he had caused me. People like him shouldn’t be allowed to roam the streets with humans. They are a threat to people’s lives. And there was Liam, the man who gave me the courage I lacked. He renewed my hope and stood by me when I thought there was no one. Truth be told, even though he saved me from being murdered by Matthew, I wouldn’t have been able to face Matthew myself at the station if he hadn’t been with me. His presence and the simple gesture at the police station boosted my morale. It gave me the impression that he would be with me no matter the choice I made. And why

LIAMThe room was a disaster. Blood. Shattered glass. Her picture frame was clinging to the wall by one nail, and Loretta was being strangled by a man in the middle of her room. The scene from the previous day couldn’t get out of my head. I saw her eyes as soon as I walked in—the way she begged for her life, the way she pleaded for help even though she wasn’t saying a word. I felt for her even though I wasn’t in her shoes. I could imagine the pain she had to endure. I could imagine what she had to go through while battling with him. What if I had come later? What if I hadn’t been at home? Would she have lost her life yesterday? The cops and the ambulance arrived thirty minutes later. Matthew was taken to the station, and Loretta was rushed to the hospital. I followed suit. I couldn’t leave her alone. I was afraid something bad would happen again. She had been sleeping since yesterday and hadn’t opened her eyes. Her wounds had been treated and plastered. But as I glanced at the bruises

LORETTAMatthew kicked the knife from my hands. Before I could grab it back, it had gotten under the couch. That was it. I shouldn’t have gotten a couch. I hated that I bought a couch. My eyes blinked, shrouded with fear, and my body trembled like an epileptic patient. Why did it have to be now? Why did I fall into his trap again? “You are such a pathetic bastard, Loretta,” I hissed. He approached me with a dark smile tugging on his lips. Every step he took screamed danger. My heart skipped as he took steps toward me. I might die at this rate. No! I will die today. He wouldn’t forgive me. He wouldn’t forgive me for all the things I said while threatening him.“I warned you twice already, Loretta. Do not try to outsmart me,” he grunted, his voice husky. My body shook at his statement. I could smell danger. Everywhere reeked of danger.“I… I am sorry, Matthew. I didn’t mean it that way,” I mumbled.“You want to die, huh? Let me do you the honor.” He stretched his hand and snatched my ne

LIAMI stormed into the house and slammed the door angrily. The noise of the door ripped through the air, and it took seconds before it finally stopped ringing in my head.Loretta Maxwell. Who are you? Why do you keep interrupting my thoughts every second? Why has everything changed since I saw you?My hands found their way to my chest. I couldn’t believe what was happening. My heart skipped because of a mere touch? Because she touched me?Her facial expression when I was speaking to her appeared in my head, and I suddenly felt bad. That wasn’t the plan. Maybe I shouldn’t have spoken the way I did. She meant no harm. She only tried to help me. I shouldn’t have shouted at her the way I did. My heart twitched as I thought about that.Could she be crying right now? What if she hates me now?Gosh! Why do I even care about what she feels about me? Why do I care if she hated me or not? I deserve it. I acted like a jerk, and I deserve her hatred.Putting a hand on my waist, I ran my fingers
