I was confused by the sudden blackness, but I finally realized that that we were moving. He was carrying me and running, running so fast that my eyes only had time to process that it was night outside, and that’s why everything was looked black.

As suddenly as he had grabbed me, he stopped. He couldn’t have been running for more than a few seconds, and yet I had no idea where we were.

“Where are we?” I asked as I looked around. We were obviously in a clearing in a forest somewhere, I noted as my eyes began to adjust to the darkness finally.

“In the woods about halfway between your apartment and Orlando,” he informed me.

Holy shit. Orlando was four hours from where I lived. He just did a two hour trip in seconds, and he wasn’t even winded. He wasn’t kidding when he said they were fast.

“I know you said vampires were really fast, but….”

“But it’s different to experience it and truly understand how fast?” he offered.

I nodded. I was still taking in the new surroundings when he wrapped his arms around me from behind. His touch was electric, and I tensed a little but quickly relaxed. His smell was so soothing, it calmed me as I became enveloped in it, and before I knew it I was totally entranced in it. That scent was like a drug. Was that a vampire thing?

“You like my scent don’t you?” I could here the smile in his voice. It was amusing to him. I scowled, but before I could retort, he continued, “It’s natural you know, to be enamored by your mate’s scent.” I felt him press his face to the top of my head and heard him take a deep, indulgent breath. “Your’s does the same thing to me. The trick to not becoming completely distracted by it, is by embracing and acknowledging it.”

“Is that your proof that we are mates?” I teased.

“You can’t honestly say that you haven’t felt any of the signs of our mate bond.”

“It’s hard to know that I’ve felt the bond if I have no idea what a mate bond is supposed to feel like,” I hedged.

“An inexplicable attraction, a powerful pull towards someone, I’ve heard that sometimes mates experience signs of a mate before meeting them.”

“You’ve heard? You haven’t experienced it before?”

“Fated mates are not an everyday occurrence. They don’t come along all the time. Some people never meet their fated mate, and no one has ever had more than two in one lifetime. So no, until our journeys met, I’ve never had a fated mate. I have chosen a mate in the past, but it didn’t work out.”

He seemed a little bitter about it. Things must have gone very wrong between him and his chosen mate. “Is that why you had to leave your vampire family?”

“Yes,” he confirmed.

I nodded. I didn’t want to push him on the subject, so I confessed, “I have experienced some of that. I was smelling your scent everywhere for weeks before I met you. Of course you happened to be nearby, but my witch senses told me that it belonged to someone important about to enter my life.”

He asked in a teasing voice, “They told you? Are your witch senses like a voice in your head?”

I laughed. “No. Every witch has different psychic senses, so I suppose it could work like that if they are clairaudient, although no one I know who has it has ever described it like that. No, mine are more claircognizant. I just know things sometimes. It’ll pop into my head like I suddenly remembered it, only I didn’t know it before.”

“Interesting.”

We stood together in silence for a moment. He still had his arms wrapped around me from behind.

“You want to see another one of my vampire abilities?” he asked suddenly, playfully.

“Sure.” I wanted to know about everything he could do.

He gripped me tighter, and then we began to float. Higher and higher we went, until we were above the trees, gliding over them.

“You can fly?” I gaped. I had no idea vampires could fly. I knew they didn’t shift into bats like in stories, but I never imagined they might still be able to fly.

“We can float,” he corrected. “It’s how we can hang from ceilings and climb walls.”

“Float, fly, what’s the difference?”

“Well you will notice we aren’t moving very fast, and you will also notice that we are very gradually beginning to descend. Our powers can’t hold us up and fight gravity for long. Older more practiced vampires can do it longer, but it’s actually quite difficult. It requires a balance of mental focus and subconscious instinct.”

After a moment I realized we were in fact descending very gradually. I didn’t care though. It still felt like flying to me, and it was an amazing feeling.

I took everything in: the cool breeze on my face, the warmth of Dax’s body, the strength of his arms, his scent, the scenery all around me… this was pure bliss.

DaxThat wasn’t what I was expecting, though she certainly was powerful enough to kill a wolf. I’d wager she could hold her own against more than one. “You’re worried about one wolf?” I asked confused. She shook her head again. “You don’t understand.”Again, I waited for her to explain. “My coven… they made a deal. I broke that deal, and the consequences… My mother and sister helped me escape in secret, if anyone found out they helped me, they’d be killed and possibly the whole coven along with them. I don’t want that to happen to you too.”Alright clearly there was a lot more to the story, but she was afraid to tell me for fear of my life. This is about more than just one dead wolf….“Okay,” I soothed her, pulling her close. “Okay,” I said again as I stroked her hair. I guess I would have to wait and see what Benedict found out. Nearly a week had gone by when I got a phone call from an unknown number. It was Benedict, calling from New York City. It seemed he had found a pay phone

DaxWhen I got back to the apartment with her french toast, she was at the sink doing some dishes. “Are you awake now?” I teased. She laughed, “Coffee helps. Did you get the french toast?”I held up the bag. “Yessss!” she gasped as she ran over to take the bag from me, opening it as she walked back into the kitchen area. I looked back at the dishes, then glanced around the apartment. It was a bit of a mess. “Do you want help cleaning up?”“No I’ll do it.”I grinned, “But you’ve never had a vampire boyfriend before. We are excellent at getting things done. You know, cause of the superspeed.”She had begun to dig into her french toast. “Superspeed or not, it’s still my mess, I will be the one to clean it.”I rolled my eyes. “Stubborn as ever.” I went ahead and cleaned up anyway. In a matter of seconds I had the bed made, everything picked up and put away, the dishes done, laundry put in the machine, and dusted the entire apartment. I was already vacuuming while a mop bucket was filli

DaxMy acquaintance was the guy who had helped me change my last name. He wasn’t a private investigator, just a guy who sold identification documents (passports, birth certificates, social security, etc) to people who needed it under the radar. Most of his clientele were immigrants, but vampires use people like him given how we don’t age, and we need someone who won’t ask questions. In this instance however, I did need him to do some research, which would probably take some convincing. I tracked him down in the old downtown area. He was still exactly where he was when I used his services last time. He kept a small office in the back of an old barber shop. The owner let him set up shop there on the condition that he gets a cut of the profits. I melted into shadow and moved to the corner of his office. I waited a moment before coming out of the shadows. “I know your there Dax,” he spoke before I had a chance to show myself. I casually stepped out of the shadows then and moved aroun

DaxShe was beautiful, my new mate. Beautiful, powerful, funny, and extremely frustrating. Probably the most frustrating thing about her was that she didn’t want to believe we were fated mates, but those walls of hers were a problem too. I wasn’t sure how I was going to get her to let me in. Yes, she was frustrating, but at least she wasn’t Tallia. Tallia was beautiful, but she was also annoying and manipulative. She was a total brat. I only agreed to be mated with her because the family insisted. Was there a time when I had affections and feelings for Tallia? Yes, but I never loved her, not really. She was my mentor, and we had chemistry, which is probably why the family thought it would be a good match, but that was all we had. Being forced to leave the family was difficult, but I’d make the same choice every time just to get away from her. And now I’ve found my true mate, my fated mate. I stroked her hair as I watched her sleep. Last night she had fallen asleep in my arms as sh

  • The Exiled Vampire’s Second Wife   Chapter 8

Back at my apartment, I cleaned myself up and put on some soft fuzzy pants and a loose cotton t-shirt. I was still raging as I lit some candles around the apartment in an effort to help myself wind down for the night. I know I was frustrated earlier that he hadn’t texted me back all day, but in hindsight I really didn’t know why I had gotten so angry over something so… not worth getting angry about. And when he suddenly showed up to save me after not talking to me all day, it just got so much worse. I should have been grateful that he cared enough to protect me right? Instead I was just furious. About half an hour after I got home, he knocked on my door. I almost decided not to answer it, to ignore him as he had ignored me. But now that I had let him into the apartment, I was pretty sure if I didn’t answer, he would just find another way in. I could remedy that by spelling him out again, but I didn’t think I would have time before he just decided to enter on his own. I took a deep

We touched down what must have been a few miles from where we were. Upon landing, he immediately scooped me up in his arms and the next thing I knew, we were back in my apartment. “That was fun,” I said, “but you never showed me your supposed camouflaging abilities.” I raised my brow at him expectant. He rolled his eyes. “As you wish.” And then I watched as he faded into shadow. Literally. He was standing before me in the form of a faint shadow silhouette. Then suddenly he moved toward the wall, his body completely melding with the shadow cast on the wall from the lamp light in my apartment. I blinked. It was the most bizarre thing I had ever seen. He suddenly reappeared in his solid form next to me making me jump. “I told you not to do that!”He held up his hands. “Sorry. I got a little carried away.”Once I settled again, I asked, “So is that all of your abilities.”“Well I have a few more I could show you in bed…” he grinned devilishly. I smacked his arm. “I meant vampire abili
