“You’ve awakened your Fae energy?” I ask, stuttering, pulling away from him.

“Since I was a child. I awoke at the age of nine,” he answers, lip quirking. “Surprised? You shouldn't be. I was quite exceptional as a kid.”

I've never thought about the possibility of King Sven having Fae energy which would enable him to awaken his Fae powers due to him being dominantly a hybrid. But now that I know he has it only raises more questions.

Faes who have awakened have the ability to reach other Fae

My ankle has now swollen to the point that the chain around my ankles is now tighter than it has ever been. I cannot feel my legs as I prepare for my match which is in the next few hours. I’m wearing the dirty clothes from my match yesterday, not like I have much choice either way. Besides, I could care less. Not when I am literally stepping out to die especially since Adrian had broken my staff into two just last night so it is basically useless. A faint sigh escapes my lips as I begin to tie my hair into a rough bun. Just then I hear a knock on my door. I know it’s not king Sven since he does not knock, so it could probably be Adrian again coming to laugh at my face before I die in my upcoming match. Before I can say anything, the door twists open and Maggi steps in. “Gracious cessi, you look terrible,” is the first thing she says once she sets her eyes on me. She closes the door behind her and walks further into the room, looking around it like it’s anything special. “My first

An exasperated sigh leaves my lips as I wear my nightgown and head for the bathroom. I take a piss and flush the toilet. Then I pick up my dirty clothes and stretch them. They might be dirty, but they are the only things I have to wear for tomorrow’s match. As I stretch my clothes, I remember I did not pick up my staff after the match.I freeze.A sharp breath leaves me as frustration coils tightly in my chest. I sigh again, heavier this time, wondering if someone probably threw it off. They most likely did. Now, not only do I have a broken leg, but I am practically going to set a record for the dumbest way to die once I step into the arena without my staff. My brother, Maggi, Isadora, and even King Sven, who are all betting on me, would be disappointed. But at this point, I could not care less.I am tired. When I am done stretching out my clothes, I stare at the water in the bathtub. The faint reflection of my face stares back at me. I look dull, exhausted, and hollow. I immediately

“You confuse me, Sven,” I say as he drops me at the edge of the bed in my room. He doesn't say anything in response, just backs away and stares at me with green eyes which seems to be filled with thoughts I'm not privy to. “You don't like me…”“And why do you think I don't like you? I don't remember telling you that I didn't,” he says, voice oddly calm as if he didn't just say something that leaves me extremely perplex. “I'm a Fae. That alone tells me you hate me, Sven.”He tilts his head. “It does?”“Stop pretending. You hate my kind.”“I understand my actions can be confusing, but that doesn't mean I hate you, my little Fae,” he smiles at me and it only makes my heart flutter and cheeks burn. “I knew about your existence since you entered my Kingdom, Olivia. Yet, I did nothing. Shouldn't that tell you that I don't hate you?”“I don't know. You tell me. After all, you're the master at being unpredictable.”He laughs, a low deep chuckle as he cocks an eyebrow at me. “Let's forget abo

Without responding, I head to a corner to sit, leaning my back against the wall. I need a minute to myself without having to think about King Sven and the unnameable feeling stirring within me, one that I can't even blame on the mate bond that's practically useless. A minute without having to think that I have taken the life of two people and might be taking even more just to get freedom.King Sven clears his throat as he moves towards me, but I don't look at him as my gaze fixes to the floor. My eyes hurt and I can barely even see through them.“Am I being ignored?” He asks.I don't answer.“Or did you manage to lose your voice during the match? Your hearing perhaps?” He says teasingly, as though we're joking amongst ourselves. “Did the Lycan punch you too hard?”Still, I don't answer.“Oh, I am being ignored,” King Sven relents with a sigh. “Is it because of the match? I thought you were fearless, Olivia. So why is a match you won upsetting your mood?”“It's not,” I snap, lifting my

“As you both know already. There are no rules for the Dance of the Dead, but any last words to each other?” The announcer asks as he looks between me and Darius.Darius grins, baring his fangs as his gaze rakes over me like I am nothing but a prey to him. “I’ll enjoy ripping your chest open. Or maybe I’ll start with your head.”I don't answer. Instead, I take a step back, spinning my staff in a tight arc, the weight of it is steady in my grip. Darius taunts don't rattle me. If anything, they only stoke the fire in my veins. Good. The world will be better with his blood spilled on this sand.“I can make your death quick if you let me give the audience what I know they would love,” he says suddenly, just as the announcer leaves, signifying the start of the match.“And what might that be?” I already know. But I ask anyway. His tongue flicks over a fang. “Ever heard of voyeurism? I could give you the best release of your life before I blow your brains out.”My fingers tighten around the s

There's a dull throb in my heart. One different from the one I felt earlier. This is more tamed, aching, spreading around areas in my chest I'll never be able to reach with my hand.Katniss continues to stare at me as she stands by the door, holding it ajar. She raises a condescending brow. “Just because there are no guards at their post doesn't mean you have the right to come over to the King's quarter,” she says. “You should be punished for this, but I'll excuse you because I'm feeling charitable today. What are you doing here?”I don’t answer. My gaze slides past her, into the room, where King Sven lies sprawled across the bed like a fallen warrior—or, more accurately, like a man who just got very thoroughly knocked out. Katniss snaps her fingers in my face. “Eyes down here, sweetheart. Unless you’re suddenly fascinated by an unconscious King?” My gaze drifts back to her, and at this point I don't even know what to say anymore, but I can't just keep quiet. Right. Words. I shou

I carry the now empty tray Isadora brought to me yesterday evening to the general kitchen. As I walk, the dread of seeing Kane again gnaws at me. His threat from yesterday lingers in my mind, and I fear I won’t be able to control myself if he touches me again. The thought of what I might do terrifi

“I heard the ripper ghost will be participating in this year's Dance of the Dead,” I hear Kane, a guard and my supervisor, say as I'm bent over scrubbing the floor of the guillotine platform. There's been another execution this morning at the palace square, and this time it was a huge bulky man - a

King Sven jaw clenches, a vein pulsing in his neck. His voice sharpens. “Eris was never home. It was a prison.” His eyes burn, dark green ringed with fierce gold, reminiscent of the day he dragged me to the council room. “And you're seriously asking why the walls of Eris fell? Even after everything

Cleaning the guards toilet has to be the worst thing ever. Not only am I working with broken fingers, but the stench from the shit and piss mixed together is enough to poison me. It's now midnight and I'm completely famished as I clean the last toilet. This one is completely messy, filled with sta
