Chapter 14: Hidding

(Ernesta's POV)

I knew Arthur wasn’t someone easy to deal with, neither was Marcus, but if I wanted to protect my son and myself, I couldn’t afford to back down. I couldn’t escape this swamp unless I found the safest way out.

Arthur was a calculating man. He surely understood that if Eulalia came back, things wouldn’t stay as easy as they were now. He could use Silas to threaten me, but not her. Eulalia wasn’t someone who obeyed quietly, if she were, he wouldn’t have had to use me in the first place.

Arthur’s expression darkened noticeably. He stared deep into my eyes, as if trying to determine whether my words were true. Only after a long silence did he finally speak.

“I’ll handle this myself. For now, your only job is to get him to let me join that project.”

He stepped closer until he was right in front of me.

“Don’t even think about refusing. If you screw this up, I’ll take it out on your son.”

I held back the anger rising inside, lowered my gaze, and said nothing.
