ANNA

Tears welled up in my eyes immediately, my hands shook uncontrollably from fear. I put my phone in my bag, wiped my face and hastened my steps towards the bus stop. I had just two weeks to come up with fifty thousand dollars, I felt devastated.

I opened the door to my house with full alertness in case I was being traced to where I lived, I locked the door behind me immediately after I entered. I took a sit, unlocked my phone and searched for who I could call for help, the only contact that stared at me was Cassie's. I couldn't bring myself to call her to lend me money, after all, it wasn't like the regular two hundred dollars she would lend me.

I met Cassie in high school, she was transferred because her parents relocated to our town, Aurora. We clicked pretty well and we have been friends, she often came through for me whenever I needed help. I was able to get my current job through her, I could say she was the only person who truly cared about me and I couldn't ruin everything by asking her for this.

I dropped the phone, I went to bed to fold myself in it and wondered how I'd get myself out of this mess. Would I die this way? With a heavy mind, I fell into a deep sleep.

………..

It surprised me how I was able to get a sound sleep despite all that weighed my mind down yesterday. I looked at the wall clock at work, it was half past 2 p.m., and time was running fast now that j have a debt to clear up.

A young woman walked in, she was dressed in jean trousers, a teal green crop top, matching sandals and a channel bag. I could tell from her rich appearance. Surprisingly, she had almost the same body structure as me. Her friend waved at her and she walked towards her table, I left the order desk with my notepad to request her order.

"Good afternoon ma'am, what would you like to have?" I asked her as I held on to my own tightly to note her order.

"Can't you see we're trying to have a conversation here?" She slammed the words at me and finished me off with scornful eyes. I felt embarrassed because all eyes turned in our direction.

"She will have what I ordered" Her friend answered with a smiling face.

I went back to relay the order, I wasn't surprised at the attitude, it was a usual spring the rich pull whenever they were angry.

I wondered how Pamela coped with her attitude but didn't behave like her despite being rich as well. She made me her best attendant after I filled in Cassie's empty slot.

Cassie used to work in Urban Grind cafe, she left when she got a better offer and she was kind enough to put in good words for me which made the employment smooth. She used to be Pamela's favourite until I switched with Cassie and she made me her favourite too.

Pamela would often come to the cafe and also gave me tips most of the time. I did not understand what her friend was going through,  but I could see she had been trying to pacify her after I left their table.

About an hour later, Pamela came to pay the bills and also rolled a note with the tip she gave me.

"Thank you" I said excitedly as I watched her wave goodbye.

I unrolled the paper when she was out of the building with her friend. She had written, "I'm sorry this is impromptu, let's meet after your closing hour at the car park. Thanks Anna".

I folded the paper and dipped it in my pocket. Why would she want to see me, I have been on my best behaviour and I hope her friend wasn't trying to do too much. I have a lot on my table already.

……..

I rounded up and I went to the car park, I didn't see Pamela so I just paced up and down to clear my head. I heard a car honk, she wound the glass down and waved at me.

I entered the car and we said our hellos. Pamela looked a bit worried which was unusual, she held my left hand, cleared her throat and started to talk.

Apparently, her friend who snapped at me earlier was Daisy Lewis and her father wanted her to marry a total stranger in exchange to prevent her father's company from folding up due to debts.

She kept on going on and on about how Daisy was shocked about the sudden marriage from her father, how she couldn't refuse it because her hands were tied and she had no choice.

I cut her short when I said, "I feel sorry for your friend Pamela, but why are you telling me all of this?"

"Because we need your help and I need you to understand the reason behind it", she answered in a low tone.

"What do you need my help with?" I questioned her.

She looked at me with uncertainty, took a deep breath and answered, "We need you to be a fake bride”. I released my hand from her grip but she continued, "It's less than two weeks away from now, I promise we're going to annul it. The only thing we need is your presence as the bride".

I chuckled forcefully, "I have a lot on my plate and I do not have time to on a charade".

I tried to open the car door but she held on to me tightly and started pleading. I wasn't ready to be caught in between the rich folks but she kept on emphasizing how I'd fit the role perfectly because I have almost the same body frame as Daisy.

"I understand your plight, Pamela, I also have my problems. At least she isn't in a financial situation" I said firmly.

She looked relieved instantly, I thought it was weird till she replied happily, "I'm not asking you to do this for free, you'll be paid sixty thousand dollars".

My head went into a trance, that was more than enough to pay the loan sharks!

  • The Fake Bride   CHAPTER 16

ANNAI walked faster, I didn't see any reason why I shouldn't hasten my steps. I do not know anybody here and the voice doesn't seem to sound like Anthony’s. “Hey!”, I heard again, this time around, my heart skipped two beats and I stopped to look behind me. Behind the blonde lady I saw in the exchange room earlier was a man who seemed to be in his thirties. He stood at about 5’7 feet, broad shoulders and toned arms bulging out of the tight T-shirt he wore which signified he worked out regularly. He approached me, and the more he got nearer, the more I was able to catch on his looks. He has a strong jawline and a fair skin tone that harboured his full beard and moustache. Each stamp of his foot on the grass was like a war between his boots and the poor grass that bent beneath his steps. “Do you not hear been called?”, he questioned, maintaining a straight face while the blonde lady walked up to us. “I.. I… I didn't hear my…my name”, words almost failed me as I replied. He mimick

ANNAThe Anthony never included that we would go further than where I stood, if I went with the man, how would he see me from afar? I walked slowly behind him, counting my steps as I did.“S…sir…sir”, I stammered as I tried to call his attention. He turned back abruptly, “What is it!”, his voice loud and scary. The little courage I had to call his attention flew out of the window, even though I needed to ask him where we were headed. “The… the instruction was to meet under… under the o… oak tree sir”. “This is why I don't like to work with newbies”, he lamented. “Just come with me and quit the stupid questions!”, he shouted at me, I wondered if he ever talked in a calm tone. I hastened my footsteps to catch up with the margin between us, I looked around in the hope that Anthony would keep with his promise. We walked for a few minutes in the bush, there were footstep trails everywhere we passed which meant only one thing, it was a regular path. I followed him quietly this time ar

ANNAMy body stiffened, just as if cold blood rushed down my spine at the utterance of his words. I was moving from frying pan to fire, messing up the deal with a stranger is as bad enough as it could be, but coming back home to tell Daniel would be worse. I swallowed hard, my throat dry like a desert although I tried not to show it, but my facial expression would have given me up. With the little strength in me, “I will try my best according to what Anthony has taught me”, I replied, twisting my fingers badly, I had never been this nervous. He chuckled lightly, raising a glass at me like he wanted to cheer me, “Good girl. You better not, off you go”. What was I expecting, after all, he was about to make a huge amount of money, and it is normal for him to be happy about it. I started to imagine different scenarios in my head as I walked towards the door, “What if, what if, just what if it goes wrong, would that be the end of me? Would Daniel try to avenge me?”, my thoughts collided

  • The Fake Bride   CHAPTER 13

ANNAHow cruel could he be to start sending me on missions that could end my life? I keep seeing more reasons Daisy saved herself from hell and pushed me into this lion's den. But can I blame her? I blame my mother who wouldn't stop disappointing me. If she hadn't owed the loan sharks money, I wouldn't have been lured into this because I needed money. Fine, he paid off the debt I had left, but it doesn't warrant that he put me in such a tight position. Daniel Matt has no heart for sympathy. Hot tears flowed down my cheeks, I have not cried this much ever since I lost my father. I felt like I could die at any time without fulfilling my dreams. ……. I watched the sunrise on a Sunday morning, nature is indeed beautiful. For a moment, I forgot my dilemma and just enjoyed the nice view in front of me. A hunger pang struck in my stomach that made me realize I needed to eat. I'm sure Ray would have prepared several meals and snacks since he takes the weekend of

DANIELAnna would not stop sulking, it infuriated me. She should have thought about it before messing with a man like me. I am Daniel Matt, nobody makes a fool out of me and goes scot-free, absolutely nobody! Anger clouded my eyes and ran through my blood, I was bent on taking revenge on her for playing with my intelligence. Mr Lewis was not left out either, I was only postponing his punishment till I knew the perfect time to strike him. I had Anna at the tip of my fingers now, at least for the next year. I recently paid the loan sharks she owed the outstanding balance, leaving her to fully depend on me for money. “How dangerous could it be”, her voice so low that I barely heard her. “Dangerous enough that you could get killed”, I answered her coldly. I am doing her a big favour by letting her stay and work with me. The loan shark would have killed her either way if she refused to pay her debt. I further reminded her that Anthony would put her through the procedures. They were s

  • The Fake Bride   Chapter Eleven

DANIELI watched her descend the stairs, she shone in the green dress. The dress embraced her curves and her cleavage slightly opened looking firm. The pieces of jewellery blended with her skin tone, she perfectly matched someone I could use as a wife in my outings. I had told Anthony to get her a dress for the bidding party I had that evening, I didn't expect he would go all out to get a fine dress. Was it the dress or Anna? All I know is she looks good, and that is all that there is to it. She was just the perfect person for the job, her face and body would benefit me and I cannot wait to start making cool money with her. If you know me from afar, you would know me to be a master investor. Even the Bible says man shall not live with bread alone. But I do something else and cover up with the investment company. I get money from there, but the thread that moves the needle is my other job. I supply ammunition to top officials, countries facing war, drug dealers and whoever needs m
