Chapter 4

Author: Keyboard Overkill
I didn't tell anyone the day I moved out of the family estate. Calling it a move was generous.

I only had two suitcases. A year ago, I'd arrived with those same two suitcases. The suits in my closet were ones my mother had mistakenly bought in Blair's size and left for me. Even the scarf Andrew had given me was originally meant for Blair.

The family portrait on my desk had been retaken just to squeeze me into the frame. Blair stood at the very center. They'd placed me at the far edge.

I took only my documents and laptop. The watch Joseph had given me stayed behind on the desk.

The sign on the door still read "Guest Suite."

Perfect. Once I was gone, they wouldn't even have to change it back.

-

The day Renee returned to her former company, the West District Data Center officially broke ground.

Blair wore a custom-made suit as she cut the ribbon onstage. Andrew personally handled the project's legal procedures, while Joseph stood beside Blair and announced an additional investment on behalf of the Hamiltons.

Cameron posted on social media: [Some people only stir up trouble. The ones who actually get things done are the ones who solve problems.]

In the photo, everyone surrounded Blair. She had finally secured the seat on the board she'd always wanted.

Renee's mother, Vera Stein, sent a video of the ceremony to the family group chat.

[Blair took the most important step of her life today. If you still consider yourself part of this family, come back and apologize to her.]

-

I left the group chat.

At the office, Desiree pushed the partnership agreement across the desk toward me. "You've been gone for a year, and the department's been a complete mess. Some people said you were too rigid. I think risk management needs someone with the guts to refuse to sign."

I lowered my head and signed my name.

Desiree looked at me. "What are you going to do about the Collins?"

"Nothing."

"You're really not going back?"

"They don't need me." I capped my pen. "And I don't need their acknowledgment."

The Collins, however, remained convinced that I was merely throwing a tantrum.

-

On the third day after construction began on the data center, regulators conducted another surprise inspection.

They discovered that the fire safety documents were fraudulent. The project was immediately suspended, and the investors demanded that the person responsible for risk management come forward.

Blair waited for Renee in the group's conference room for three hours. When Renee didn't show up, Blair finally called her.

"Renee, let's put the project aside for now. Dad said that as long as you come back and sign off on it, we can reconsider your position in the family trust," she said.

"What happens after I sign?" Renee asked.

"We'll get through the crisis in front of us first. Your name can stay below mine for now. If the right opportunity comes up in the future, we can change it."

Renee let out a quiet laugh. "You want me to shoulder the responsibilities of the legitimate eldest daughter, yet you won't even give me the title of the legitimate eldest daughter. Blair, you're the one who's good at being flexible."

Blair's voice turned cold. "We're family. Do you really have to take things this far?"

"You're family. I'm not." With that, Renee hung up.

That night, Renee's father, Gideon Collins, issued his final ultimatum in the family group chat.

[9:00 a.m. tomorrow. Get your ass back to the group and sign. If you don't come, I'll have the family attorney remove your name from the family trust entirely.]

Andrew immediately followed with a message.

[Renee, don't push Dad this far.]

Joseph tried to persuade her too.

[Blair just joined the board. She can't be saddled with responsibility for fraud right away.]

Cameron was even more direct.

[You spent 25 years growing up alone out there because you wanted a family, didn't you? If they remove your name from the family trust, you'll regret it someday, and there won't be anywhere left for you to cry.]

None of them noticed that Renee had already left the family group chat.

At 9:00 a.m. the next morning, Renee didn't show up.

In front of the entire board, Gideon called the family attorney. "Remove Renee Collins' name."

Vera suddenly looked uneasy. "Shouldn't we wait a little longer?"

Gideon scoffed. "She lived out there for 25 years. Isn't being recognized by us what she's been waiting for all this time? Let's scare her a little. She'll come running back."

Andrew personally went to Renee's room. Less than a minute later, he came rushing downstairs, his face deathly pale. "Dad, all her belongings are gone."

Vera shot to her feet. "What do you mean? When did she move out?"

"Yesterday morning," the housekeeper answered softly.

Three months later, construction on the data center resumed. All non-compliant materials were removed, and the Collins Group sold two idle properties to cover the funding shortfall. My father resigned as CEO. Andrew also left the legal department and accepted disciplinary action from the industry. He made no excuses for himself. Blair cooperated with the investigation, returned her director's bonus, and started over on an entry-level project team. The Hamiltons formally called off the engagement. Joseph returned the limited-edition watch to Blair. I heard she refused to take it back.Cameron withdrew from the project and voluntarily accepted responsibility for the losses caused by his investment decisions.Everyone paid a price, including me. I'd lost a family I'd only had for a year. But when I thought back on it, I'd lived in a guest suite from the day I walked through their door until the day I left. I hadn't really had a home there to begin with.…Tranquil Risk Management ga

The day of the meeting, I went anyway. Not for another homecoming ceremony. I went to say what still needed to be said. The family attorney brought the family trust documents.Blair stood behind my parents, stripped of the air of the eldest daughter she had once carried. She placed the key to the master suite in front of me. "The room is empty now. I'll return everything that belongs to you."I didn't take the key. "Where are you moving?""The west wing. The room where guests used to stay," she replied. My mother's expression changed. "It's smaller, and it's damp over there."Blair smiled faintly. "Renee lived there for a year. Why can't I?"My mother fell silent. The family attorney raised his pen. "Renee Collins will be listed first, and Blair Collins will be listed second. Once the changes are made, you'll officially be included in the family trust."I looked at the document. "Add one more condition."The family attorney frowned. "What?""The family trust establishes inhe

My father's cousin was taken away for questioning soon after. Thirty percent of the data center's material costs had been transferred into his personal account. My father sank back into his chair, his face ashen. "I didn't know. Blair was in charge of the project."Blair looked up. "You were the one who appointed the contractor. You said Uncle Peter had worked with the family for 20 years and that we couldn't turn our backs on him."My father snapped, "I told you to look after him. I didn't tell you to falsify anything with him!""I warned you," Blair said, her voice hoarse. "You told us to start construction first. You also said Renee could handle the risks afterward."No one in the conference room spoke again. My father had always looked down on me for following the rules. Yet from the very beginning, he'd been counting on me to clean up after everyone who didn't.One of the board representatives tapped the table. "Let's proceed with the vote. First, suspend Mr. Collins from h

Blair was suspended from her position, and Andrew was required to cooperate with the investigation. My mother sent me dozens of messages every day. One moment, she'd tell me my father's blood pressure was high. The next, she'd say Blair hadn't slept all night. Not once did she ask how I'd been doing over the past year.I blocked her.…On the third day of the project investigation, the owner of the construction company came to see me.He pushed a bank card across the table. "Miss Collins, everyone's just trying to get by. Sure, the materials were changed. But nothing actually caught fire, right?"I didn't touch the card. "What's the PIN?"He froze, then laughed. "Six eights.""Smart." I picked up my phone and called the regulator. "Did you hear that?"The smile vanished from the construction company owner's face. He lunged for my phone.Desiree hit the panic button on the side of the desk, and security arrived moments later.I slipped the bank card into an evidence bag. "You

The next day, my father came in person. My mother and Andrew stood behind him at the company reception desk. The receptionist asked if he had an appointment. My father's face darkened. "I'm Renee Collins's father."The receptionist remained perfectly polite. "You still need an appointment, sir."When I came out of the conference room, my father was on the verge of losing his temper. The moment he saw me, he lowered his voice. "Let's talk in private.""We can talk here," I said flatly.Employees who passed by began to slow their steps. My father gritted his teeth. "I'll agree to what you wanted regarding the family trust. Your name will be listed above Blair's, and you can have the master suite."My mother immediately added, "Blair's back is still injured. She'll need some time to move out."I nodded. "So I still have to wait."Her expression stiffened.Andrew held out a document. "The group is willing to hire you as a special consultant. If you turn the project around, you'

Vera's face went pale. "Yesterday morning? Why didn't you stop her from leaving?"Philip glanced at Gideon. "Mr. Collins already instructed me that if Miss Renee wanted to leave, I should let her go."Gideon's expression darkened. "I said that in the heat of the moment!"Andrew had already rushed upstairs. A few minutes later, he came back down with the watch. The gift box remained unopened, and even the wrapping paper was perfectly intact.Joseph's fingers went rigid at the sight of it.Blair said softly, "Maybe Renee will just be away for a few days. Once the project is sorted out, I'll go get her."Andrew suddenly looked up. "She even returned her employee ID. Her resignation has already gone through. She isn't throwing a tantrum. She really doesn't want us anymore."Gideon scoffed. "Fine. So she wants to prove how stubborn she can be? Then if something goes wrong with the project, she shouldn't blame our family for refusing to clean up her mess."At 10:00 a.m. that morning,
