16. A new rival

EMILY POV

I felt faint inside and for a few seconds, I wished the ground would open up and swallow me. I wondered how much of the conversation he heard.

“Leo! What are you doing here?” I asked him, surprise written all over my face.

“What kind of question is that? Did you think I’ll stand still when my wife fainted and was rushed to the hospital?” he asked and turned to face the doctor and me simultaneously.

“What were you talking about? Who’s keeping a baby?” he asked. Then I knew he didn’t hear our previous conversation until the doctor’s last words.

I made eye contact with her and moved my head in the negative. She got my message and smiled. “I was having a conversation with one of my patients until you walked in,” she said and took off her earphones from her ears. I was startled by her quick moves in covering up for me.
