Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Big Six
That evening, Rachel came home early for once.

Noelle was playing with her building blocks in the living room. The moment she saw Rachel walk through the door, her eyes lit up.

However, she stayed where she was, too careful to move.

Rachel glanced at her without saying a word and headed straight for the bedroom.

Noelle lowered her head and went back to stacking her blocks.

I stood in the kitchen doorway, watching them. A heavy feeling settled in my chest.

At dinner, Rachel got a phone call.

"Jeff? Okay, I'll be right there." She set down her fork and stood up.

Noelle finally could not hold it in anymore.

"Mom..."

Rachel stopped.

She turned around, her expression icy. "How many times have I told you? Don't call me Mom."

All the color drained from Noelle's face. She opened her mouth, but when she spoke, her voice was barely louder than a whisper.

"Ms. Lloyd... Are you going out?"

"Yes."

Rachel turned and walked away.

The moment the door closed behind her, tears slipped down Noelle's cheeks. She did not make a sound. She simply lowered her head and quietly wiped them away with the back of her hand.

Something inside me finally snapped. I had spent three years holding everything together, but I could not do it anymore. I walked over and crouched in front of her. "Noelle, I want to ask you something."

She looked up at me, her eyes red.

"If I took you somewhere where there was no Mommy, would you go with me?"

Noelle froze.

After a long silence, she asked in a tiny voice, "Would Mommy come looking for us?"

I was quiet for a moment.

"No."

Noelle lowered her head and thought about it for a long time. Then, she looked up, wrapped her arms around my neck, and whispered, "Daddy, wherever you go, I'll go too."

That was the moment I made my decision.

Over the next few days, I started making preparations in secret.

I quit my job as Rachel's driver, sold the car I had driven for the past three years, and arranged for a house and a school overseas.

Every day when I picked Noelle up, I asked her the same question.

"Noelle, are you really willing to leave with me?"

Every time, she nodded.

"I am."

However, every night before bed, I still saw her clutching that stuffed doll and whispering, "Goodbye, Mommy."

On the fifth night, I received a call from Rachel.

"Tomorrow's the weekend. We’ll take Noelle to the mall and buy her some clothes."

I froze.

It was the first time in three years that Rachel had ever offered to buy Noelle anything.

"Okay."

The next day, the three of us went to the mall together. Rachel walked ahead while Noelle and I followed behind.

Noelle held my hand tightly, but her eyes never left Rachel's back.

When we passed the children's clothing section, Rachel stopped and casually picked out a few outfits.

"Try these on."

Noelle looked almost overwhelmed by the rare attention. She carefully took the clothes from Rachel.

"Thank you."

Rachel frowned slightly but said nothing.

While Noelle was trying on the clothes, she peeked out from the dressing room.

"Daddy, does this outfit look good?"

I smiled and nodded.

"It looks great."

Noelle turned to Rachel.

"Ms. Lloyd, does it look good?"

Rachel was looking at her phone. She did not even raise her head.

"Mm-hmm."

The smile on Noelle's face faded a little, but she still looked happy.

At the register, the sales clerk smiled at Noelle.

"Sweetie, your mom is so nice to you."

Noelle froze. Then, she lowered her head without saying a word.

Rachel paid, not changing her expression.

As soon as we stepped out of the mall, her phone rang again.

"Jeff? Okay, I'll come over now." She hung up and looked at me. "You two can take a cab home. I have somewhere to be."

Then, she walked away without looking back.

Noelle stood there, watching Rachel disappear into the crowd.

After a long while, she looked up at me.

"Daddy, does Mommy not want us anymore?"

I crouched down and lifted her into my arms.

"It isn't that Mommy doesn't want us. Mommy just has a life of her own."

Noelle rested her head on my shoulder and said nothing. However, I felt her tears fall against my neck.

When Rachel finished humming, she lifted her head and looked at me."What are you thinking about?""Nothing." I smiled. "I just think things are pretty good right now."She smiled and rested her head against my shoulder again."Yeah. They are."Noelle's laughter continued to ring across the yard.Nellie barked happily as she chased her own tail in circles.A gentle night breeze drifted past, carrying the faint scent of blooming flowers. I closed my eyes and took it all in.Sometimes, fate was strange. It made people go through pain, disappointment, and despair, and then, when they least expected it, it gave everything beautiful back to them.Three years ago, when I left with Noelle, I thought that was how my life would end up. Now I knew better. It had not been the end at all. It had only been the beginning, and every road we had taken since then had led us there. "Daddy!" Noelle came running over. "Come play with me!"I opened my eyes and looked at her rosy little face.

Three years had passed. The building was still the same. The trees by the entrance had grown a little taller, and there was a new security guard at the gate."Sir, you can stop here," Rachel said. She got out of the car and stood at the entrance, looking inside. I got out with Noelle in my arms.Noelle looked around and said softly, "Daddy, I remember this place.""What do you remember?""There was a slide here." She pointed toward the playground in the distance. "I used to play there."I nodded.Rachel walked over. "Want to take a look?"I looked at her, then nodded. We walked into the complex. We passed the building, then the playground, then the building where we used to live. When we stopped downstairs, Rachel looked up at one of the windows."We used to live up there," she said.I recognized it."Want to go upstairs and take a look?" I asked. She shook her head."Never mind."We stood there without saying anything. After a while, Noelle tugged on my hand."Daddy,

After we finished the cake, Noelle went to bed.Rachel and I sat together on the balcony, looking out at the city lights."Thank you," I said."You don't have to thank me," she said. "It was the least I could do."I looked at her.She turned toward me."Zane, I want to tell you something.""What?""These past few months, I've finally realized something."I said nothing and waited."I used to think my career was more important than my family. I thought making money mattered more than being there for the people I loved. I thought that as long as I gave you money, I was doing my part."She paused."I finally realized I was wrong. Noelle didn't need my money. She needed you."I realized I didn't need more money either. What I really needed was you both."She looked at me."I want to start over with you, not because you're my husband or because Noelle is my daughter, but because I love you both."I looked at her for a long time. Then, I reached out and took her hand. She fr

I said nothing."I know I don't deserve it," Rachel said. "I know I've made so many mistakes. However, over the past few months, I've had a lot of time to think about everything. "I used to be selfish, always putting myself first and never stopping to think about you or Noelle. I cannot change the mistakes I made in the past, but I want to change the way I live from now on. I want to treat you right and be there for Noelle."She paused."You don't have to answer me right now. Take your time. I just want you to know that I want to stay, not only for Noelle, but for you too."I looked into her eyes for a long time before finally speaking."Rachel, do you know how long I waited to hear you say that?"She froze."Three years," I said. "From the day we got married, I waited for you to say those words. Eventually, I stopped waiting because I knew you never would."Her eyes filled with tears."I'm sorry."I shook my head."You don't have to apologize. You chose your path, and so

After Noelle was discharged from the hospital, her attitude toward Rachel began to change again. She started talking to Rachel on her own and even asked her to help brush her hair. When Rachel cooked, Noelle would drag a little stool into the kitchen and sit in the doorway, watching her.Rachel was always careful around her, afraid of doing anything that might scare her away. One day, I took Noelle to the grocery store. On the way there, she suddenly asked, "Daddy, is Mommy going to stay here forever?"I froze."Do you want her to stay?"She thought about it for a long time."I don't know," she said. "I'm scared she'll leave one day."My heart tightened."Why are you scared she will leave?""Because she left for such a long time before." Noelle lowered her head. "I'm scared she will leave again."I crouched down and looked into her eyes."Noelle, do you want her to stay?"She nodded."Then Daddy will tell her to stay.""Will she listen?""She will."That night, I talk

I looked at Rachel."I've had everything at the company arranged," she said. "I can work remotely. I want to stay here for a while and spend time with Noelle."I said nothing."I know I'm not in a position to ask for this," she continued. "But I really want to make things right. Even if she never accepts me, even if she calls me Ms. Lloyd forever, I still want to be here for her."I looked at her for a long time before speaking."Rachel, have you really thought this through?""I have.""This might not be for a day or two. It could be a very long time.""I know.""Noelle might never accept you."Rachel fell silent for a moment, then nodded."I know," she said. "I still want to try."That night, she stayed at a hotel downstairs.I sat alone in the living room and thought about everything for a long time. The next morning, I told her, "You can stay, but don't pressure Noelle. Let her call you whatever she wants. If she wants to be close to you, let her. If she doesn’t, give
