Arielle

There was a knock on the door.

I immediately knew who it was.

I didn’t want to see him.

Not today.

Not after everything.

But before I could say anything, Sam opened the door.

Joss stood on the other side.

His eyes immediately found me.

“Arielle. Can we talk?”

I crossed my arms.

“About what?”

“Your nightly activities.”

I stared at him.

“My what?”

“You’ve been going into town every night.”

“And?”

“You come back in the early hours of the morning.”

I shrugged.

“So?”

“You’ve been drinking.”

I never thought packing my belongings would hurt this much.I’d already left the house.I’d already accepted that I wasn’t going back to the life I’d shared with Joss. But standing in Tori and Sam’s spare room, surrounded by the few things I’d managed to bring with me, made everything feel real. This was it.I was leaving. For good.I folded the last of my clothes and placed them into the suitcase.Tori stood in the doorway, watching me.“You don’t have to do this today.”I smiled sadly.“Yes, I do.”She walked over and pulled me into a hug.“I’m going to miss you.”“I’m going to miss you too.”She held me tighter.“You’d better come back and visit.”“I will.”“Promise?”“Promise.”When we pulled apart, Tori wiped a tear from her cheek.“Does Henry treat you well?”A smile immediately appeared on my face.“Better than well.”She grinned.“I knew there was something special about him.”I laughed.“You haven’t even met him.”“I don’t need to.”She pointed at me.“Look at your face.”“Wh

JossI was standing outside the pack house when I heard an unfamiliar engine approaching.I turned toward the road.A car was coming toward me.At first, I barely paid attention. Then I saw who was driving.Arielle.My heart slammed against my ribs. For the first time since she’d left, she was coming back.Thunder surged forward inside my mind.Arielle.I took a step toward the road. Then I stopped. That wasn’t her car.I didn’t recognize it.The vehicle pulled to a stop, and Arielle stepped out.I stared at her.She looked different. Not physically. There was something else.Something in her expression. She looked peaceful.Happy.Free.Then her scent reached me.My entire body went rigid.Another man’s scent was all over her.Not faint. Not something that could be explained away by standing near someone. It was deeply embedded in her scent. My wolf snarled.Another male.My stomach twisted. The mate bond had already tortured me for hours.Every time Arielle had been intimate with an

HenryI knew the moment Arielle started getting dressed that I was losing the battle. She had made up her mind. She was going home. Not because she wanted to go back to Joss. Not because she wanted the life she had left behind. She simply needed to say goodbye to the people who mattered to her and collect the rest of her belongings.I understood that.I just didn’t have to like it.I watched her pull her clothes together, trying desperately not to look as worried as I felt.I couldn’t let her leave yet.“Arielle.”She turned toward me.“Yes?”“Stay another night.”Her eyebrows lifted.“Henry…”“Just one more night.”I walked toward her.“You don’t have to leave today.”She smiled.“I know.”“I mean it.”I reached for her hands.“Stay with me tonight. Tomorrow you can go back and get your things.”She looked at me thoughtfully.“I don’t want to make things harder for you.”“You couldn’t.”She laughed softly.“You barely know me.”“I know enough.”I brushed my thumb over her knuckles.“

HenryI had spent years believing I knew what it meant to be alone. As a vampire, I had watched humans come and go. I had seen relationships begin, burn brightly for a while, and eventually fade. I had learned not to become too attached. It was easier that way. Then Arielle walked into my life. And suddenly, everything I had believed about being alone meant nothing.I lay beside her, watching her sleep, and felt something I hadn’t allowed myself to feel in a very long time.Peace.She was curled against me, her head resting on my chest, one arm draped across my stomach. Her breathing was slow and steady, and every now and then she shifted closer as though even in sleep she needed to be near me.I gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face. How had this happened? How had one woman managed to get beneath every wall I had built around myself? We had spent the entire day together. We had talked. We had laughed. We had cooked together, explored my home, shared secrets and memories.

ArielleI was lying in Henry’s embrace, looking out the enormous bedroom window at the lightening sky.The sun hadn’t broken over the horizon yet, but it wasn’t far away.I watched the darkness slowly give way to shades of blue and gold.It was beautiful.Peaceful.I felt completely content. Then, without warning, thick shutters suddenly descended over the windows.I jumped.“What the—”A quiet chuckle beside me made me turn.Henry was awake.“Sorry,” he said, still chuckling. “Didn’t mean to give you a fright.”I stared at the shutters.“They do that every morning?”“Every morning.”“Why?”“To ensure I don’t get roasted.”I burst out laughing.“You’re ridiculous.”He grinned.“I prefer to think of it as sensible.”“You’re a vampire.”“Exactly. We have certain dietary restrictions.”I laughed again.I couldn’t remember the last time I’d laughed so freely. There was something about Henry.Everything with him was easy. There were no complicated conversations. No expectations. No argumen

  • The Forgotten Luna   Chapter 54

UnknownI had been waiting in the trees all night.I stood exactly where I knew Arielle would eventually pass on her way home, hidden among the shadows where no one would think to look for me.But the night had dragged on, and Arielle still hadn’t appeared. Now the darkness was beginning to fade. A faint glow crept across the horizon as the first light of dawn broke through the trees.Still nothing.Where was she?A knot of worry tightened in my chest.Had something happened to her?Was she hurt?I should have gone looking for her hours ago.But I had promised myself I would wait. She would come home. She always did.Except tonight, she hadn’t.I stared down the empty path, refusing to let the fear taking hold of me show.Arielle was supposed to be home. She was supposed to be safe. With me.My jaw clenched as I thought about Joss. For four long years, he had been the one standing beside her. Four years of having what should have been mine. Four years of watching from a distance while
