The danger was gone, but the sudden rush of magic completely drained Seraphina's strength. Her vision blurred, her knees buckled, and she fell weakly onto the cold cobblestones, darkness swallowing her whole.
When Seraphina opened her eyes, she was lying on her massive bed. The room was quiet except for the crackling fireplace. She groaned softly, turning her head, and instantly froze.
Kael was sitting right beside her on the mattress. His large frame towered over her, his golden eyes burning with an intense, unreadable emotion.
For a second, she thought he might thank her for scaring the rogues away. Instead, his jaw tightened.
"You are reckless," Kael growled, his deep voice rough and angry. "You could have died out there. You fell down like a fragile doll the moment the fight ended. This just proves what I said in the throne room, Seraphina. You are weak."
The insult stung worse than the rogue’s claws. A hot wave of anger rushed through her veins. "Get out!" she snapped, sitting up quickly and trying to swing her legs off the bed. "I saved myself, and I don't need your pity!"
"You're not going anywhere," Kael barked.
Before she could move, Kael leaned over her, his massive hands pinning her wrists firmly against the soft mattress. The sudden proximity made her breath catch. He was heavy, warm, and smelled intensely of rain and pine trees.
"Let me go, Kael!" she breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"Shut up," he whispered fiercely.
Kael slammed his lips against hers in a brutal, passionate kiss. Seraphina gasped in shock, which only allowed him to deepen the kiss, his tongue claiming her mouth with an undeniable, dominant hunger. She wanted to fight him, she wanted to push him away, but her traitorous body melted under his touch. An involuntary, soft moan escaped her throat, sending a shiver through the room.
Hearing her moan, Kael’s control completely snapped. He released her wrists, his large hands sliding down her body with burning heat. He slipped his hands beneath her black top, deftly unhooking her bra with practiced ease and pushing her flat against the bed, his breathing ragged against her neck.
*Knock! Knock!*
The sharp sound of a fist against the wooden door shattered the heavy silence.
"Miss Seraphina?" the maid’s voice called out from the hallway. "Should I bring in the healing herbs for your arm?"
Kael froze instantly. The spell was broken. His golden eyes cleared, and a look of sudden regret and shock crossed his handsome face. He stood up immediately, stepping away from the bed and straightening his clothes, refusing to look at her.
Seraphina swallowed the thick lump in her throat, her face burning with immense embarrassment. She quickly adjusted her top.
"N-no, thank you," Seraphina called out to the door, her voice trembling slightly. "I am fine. You can leave them outside."
"Yes, milady," the maid replied, her footsteps fading down the hallway.
Without saying another word to Kael, Seraphina couldn't bear the suffocating awkwardness inside the room. Her emotions were a chaotic mess of anger and raw confusion. She scrambled out of bed, pushed past Kael's massive frame, and ran out into the cool night air, desperate to clear her head.
The castle hallways were empty, and she hurried toward the quiet security of the main garden. The cool wind bit into her skin, helping to wash away the embarrassing heat of Kael's touch. How could he reject her so brutally in front of everyone, only to touch her like that in private?
As she stepped onto the stone pathway of the dark garden, a sharp, dripping-wet voice shattered the quiet night.
"Shameless whore!!!"
Seraphina stopped dead in her tracks. She spun around, her eyes widening.
Standing under the moonlight was Aurora.
Aurora was the daughter of one of King Draven's oldest and most powerful allies. She was a beautiful, high-ranking werewolf with sleek blonde hair, but her face was currently twisted into an ugly mask of pure rage. Aurora had been obsessed with Kael for years, and everyone in the pack assumed they would marry to unite their families' fortunes.
"Excuse me?" Seraphina said, her voice instantly turning cold.
"You heard me, you pathetic human orphan!" Aurora snarled, marching right up to Seraphina, her long fingernails digging into her palms. "I saw Kael walking out of your wing just now. I know what you're doing. You are a disgusting, husband-snatching leech!"
Seraphina felt a bitter pang in her chest, remembering Kael's harsh rejection in the throne room. She looked at Aurora with tired eyes. "I didn't snatch anyone, Aurora. Kael doesn't want me. He made that perfectly clear to the whole world today."
"Then stay away from him!" Aurora screamed, her voice rising in pitch. Her eyes suddenly flashed a vicious, predatory silver, signaling that her inner wolf was taking over. "He belongs to me! He is going to be the King, and I am going to be his Queen! If you think I'm going to let a weak, packless human ruin my future, you are dead wrong."
Before Seraphina could draw her daggers, Aurora let out a feral growl. In the blink of an eye, Aurora’s body shifted violently, bones cracking and fur bursting from her skin. Within seconds, a massive, snarling grey werewolf stood where the girl had been, its long fangs dripping with saliva.
The giant grey wolf lunged forward, aiming its deadly jaws straight for Seraphina's throat.
"Listen to me carefully, Seraphina," Kael whispered, his amber eyes darkening with dangerous intensity. "You are in my territory now. That means you follow my rules. Rule number one: you do not go near my private master bedroom at the end of the hall. That space is mine alone."Seraphina crossed her arms, refusing to look intimidated. "Don't worry. I have no desire to be anywhere near you.""Rule number two," Kael continued, ignoring her comment. "You eat your meals when I eat. You do not wander the palace corridors alone. If you need to go to the library or the training grounds, you take two of my personal guards with you. No exceptions.""You are suffocating me!" she snapped, her eyes flashing with anger. "I am a princess of this pack! Your father gave me that title. You cannot lock me in a cage!""I am keeping you alive!" Kael roared suddenly, his voice vibrating through her chest. He reached out and grabbed her upper arms, pulling her an inch closer. His grip was tight, hot, and c
Aurora stood in the center of Kael’s luxurious living room, her face twisted in pure anger. Her blue eyes flashed with hatred as she finally turned her head to look at Seraphina."Why is this human garbage staying in your quarters, Kael?" Aurora demanded, her voice high and sharp. "You are the future King! Your private wing is for your future Luna, not for an adopted orphan who doesn't even belong in our pack!"Seraphina kept her face blank, but her hands tightened into fists at her sides. She was used to Aurora’s insults, but hearing them here, in Kael’s space, made her blood boil.Kael did not flinch. He stood tall, his broad shoulders relaxed, but his amber eyes were completely cold as he looked down at Aurora. "You do not burst into my room demanding answers, Aurora. Remember your place."Aurora took a step closer to Kael, her angry expression quickly changing into a fake, sweet pout. She reached out her manicured hand and placed it firmly on Kael’s bare chest, sliding her fingers
"My sons are wild," the King continued, looking up at the ceiling. "Killian is too violent. Jaxon is too careless. Lucan thinks too much but hides his true intentions. And Kael..." He paused, sighing heavily. "Kael is strong, but he is stubborn and proud. He has the heart of a true leader, but his pride makes him blind."The King turned his eyes back to her. "They are fighting over the crown, but they are also fighting over you. I know Jaxon went to your room last night. I know Kael had to step in."Seraphina looked down, feeling a bit uncomfortable. "Jaxon broke my lock, Father. I did not invite him.""I know, my child. I know," Draven said gently. He patted her hand. "That is why I approved of Kael’s decision to move you to his wing. You are not safe on your own anymore. But I want to give you some advice, Seraphina. Soon, you will have to choose which of my sons you will marry. The pack needs a Luna, and the elders want a royal match to secure the throne."He leaned closer to her,
Seraphina sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the broken pieces of wood scattered across her floor. The palace servants had not yet come to clean up the mess Jaxon and Kael had made. Her room felt empty and cold. She had to pack her few belongings soon to move into Kael’s wing, but she could not bring herself to move. She looked down at her hands. She really had nothing in this world. When King Draven found her eight years ago, she was starving, dirty, and half-dead in the cold forest. She did not have a royal trunk. She did not have any expensive dresses, jewelry, or family heirlooms. She was just a poor, homeless human girl. The King had taken her in, clothed her, and given her the title of a princess, but deep down, she always knew she was different from everyone else in this castle.Thinking about her past made a deep pain twist in her chest. She closed her eyes, and the memories of her childhood came rushing back. She remembered her biological father. He was a kind, gentle hum
"Get your hands off her!"A furious, deep roar shook the walls. Before Jaxon could even turn around, the heavy bedroom door was kicked open with a massive crash. The wood split, and the door slammed against the stone wall.Kael strode into the room like a dark storm. His face was twisted in pure, savage anger. His eyes were glowing a bright, warning gold in the dim light. He didn't look like a man; he looked like a beast ready to kill.Kael crossed the room in a second. He grabbed Jaxon by the throat and the front of his shirt, lifting his brother completely off his feet. With a brutal shove, Kael slammed Jaxon hard against the stone fireplace. The impact was loud. Jaxon gasped, the wind knocked out of him, as the glass vases on the mantelpiece fell and shattered on the hearth."Kael!" Seraphina cried, her heart jumping into her throat.Kael didn't let go. He kept Jaxon pinned against the stone, his massive hand crushing his brother's throat. His breathing was heavy and loud, a deep g
The grandfather clock in the corner of the room chimed midnight. The deep, heavy sounds echoed through the quiet space, keeping Seraphina wide awake. She tossed the blankets aside and got out of bed. Sleep was impossible tonight. Every time she closed her eyes, she either saw the bloody jaws of the rogue wolf or Kael’s cold, golden eyes staring down at her.She was wearing a simple, loose white nightgown that fell to her ankles. Her dark hair was messy, hanging down her back. To distract herself, she walked to her wooden vanity table and picked up a silver brush. She started brushing her hair with slow, hard strokes, staring at her reflection in the mirror. She looked like a normal human. But tonight had proven she was anything but normal.Suddenly, a soft sound broke the quiet.Click.Seraphina froze. Her eyes went straight to the reflection of her bedroom door in the mirror. The brass handle was turning. It was moving incredibly slowly, trying not to make a sound. Her heart began to
