I was a broken, filthy thing, and he was the god who had broken me.

Ares didn't offer a hand. He didn't show an ounce of pity. He just turned, his back to me, a silent, imperious command.

Follow.

I had to. My body was a universe of pain, my re-set shoulder a deep, sickening, liquid throb. But my pride was a harder, sharper agony. I had begged him. In front of his entire pack, I had been reduced to a weeping, broken creature, and I had asked.

He had won.

I pushed myself to my feet, my good arm shaking, my legs trembling so violently I could barely stand. The arena, which had been a wall of sound, was now a tomb. A hundred warriors, silent as the stones they stood on, watched.

They watched me, the freak, the wolf-less, bloody, and dirt-streaked... thing.

They watched him, their Alpha, the monster, the king.

And they watched me limp after him.

The Enforcers, those two stone-faced guards, didn't follow. He was my keeper now. He didn't need them.

I stumbled across the training gr

I woke to a cold bed.The spot beside me wasn't just empty; it was icy. The sheets were smooth, Ares hadn't come to bed at all.I sat up, the heavy furs pooling around my waist, and reached out through the bond. Usually, it was a roaring fire, a constant hum of his presence in the back of my mind. Today, it felt like a wall. A thick, impenetrable shield of black iron. He was blocking me out."Stubborn ass," I muttered, swinging my legs over the side of the bed.I dressed quickly in the black training leathers. They felt like armor, and today, I felt like I was walking into a different kind of war. When I opened the heavy door, the guards outside snapped to attention. They weren't the usual Enforcers. They were strangers. Stone-faced. Silent."Where is the Alpha?" I asked."The Alpha is inspecting the perimeter," one replied, staring straight ahead. "He left orders that you are not to leave the keep.""I am the Luna," I snapped, my patience fraying instantly. "I go where I ple

The morning sun did nothing to warm the stone floor of the solar. It just highlighted the tension that had settled over the room like a layer of dust.Ares stood by the window, his back to me. He hadn’t spoken since I walked in. He was staring down at the courtyard, watching the Enforcers drill, but I knew his mind was in the dungeons below."He can't stay down there, Ares," I said, my voice quiet but firm. "Elias says the dampness is making the infection in his leg worse. If he stays in that cell, he’ll lose the leg. Or he’ll die."Ares didn’t turn. His shoulders were a rigid line of black leather."Then he dies," he said. The words were flat, devoid of emotion. "He is an intruder. A liability. I gave him life when I should have given him a sword through the chest.""He is my friend," I snapped, the exhaustion of the last twenty-four hours fraying my patience. "He is the heir to my former pack. He fought Tiana. He tried to save his sister. He doesn't deserve to rot in the dark

I turned the corner toward the Alpha’s tower nearly collided with a wall of black leather.Ares.He was leaning against the stone archway, arms crossed over his chest. He hadn’t changed out of his clothes from the courtyard; they were still stiff with mud and the travel dust. His silver eyes were unreadable, but the set of his jaw was tight enough to snap iron."You smell like sickness," he stated, his nose wrinkling slightly."I smell like the healing wing," I corrected, stepping around him. "Salves and antiseptic."He fell into step beside me, his presence a heavy, suffocating weight. "You stayed with her longer than necessary. Elias said her wounds are not life-threatening.""She’s terrified, Ares. Her face is... it’s ruined." I stopped, turning to face him. The torchlight cast long, flickering shadows across his scarred face. "She’s Riel’s sister. I grew up with her. I couldn’t just leave her in the dark.""And the male?" Ares asked, his voice dropping an octave. "Did you

The scream didn’t come from inside the keep. It came from the borders.I was sitting in the solar, watching Ares trace the line of a supply route on a map, his hand warm over mine. The fire was crackling, a low, domestic sound that had become the soundtrack to our week of peace. We were arguing, playfully, about whether the village needed a new grain silo or a larger schoolhouse. Then the horn blew.It wasn’t the rhythmic, deep blast of a ceremonial horn. It was a jagged, frantic sound. Three short blasts.Intruders.Ares went still. The playful light in his silver eyes vanished, replaced instantly by the flat, cold look of the Alpha. He didn't say a word; he just moved. He was out of the chair and halfway to the door before I had even set down my quill."Stay here," he commanded, not looking back."Don't start that again," I said, grabbing my dagger from the table. I strapped it to my thigh over my simple grey dress. "I'm the Luna. If there's a threat, I face it."He paused

The sun was high and bright, a stark contrast to the blood-soaked dawn we had just survived.Standing on the balcony overlooking the main courtyard, I felt exposed. My hands were gripping the stone railing tight enough to turn my knuckles white. Below, the courtyard was packed. Not with soldiers in formation or enemies lying in wait, but with families. Pups chasing each other around the fountain. Elders sitting on benches. Warriors leaning against the walls, bandaged but smiling. It was a sea of people, and they were all looking up.Ares stood beside me. He wasn't touching me, but I could feel him. His presence was a solid, warm wall at my side, shielding me from the wind.“They’re waiting,” he murmured, his voice low enough that only I could hear.“For what?” I whispered back. “I killed your brother yesterday. Shouldn’t they be... I don’t know... afraid?”“They were afraid,” Ares said. “Of him. Of the rot. You didn’t just kill a man, Yara. You lanced a boil.” He leaned in clos

The silence in the tower wasn’t heavy anymore. It wasn't waiting for a scream, or a crash, or the smell of smoke. It was just... quiet.Ares kicked the heavy doors of his lair shut behind us. The sound of the latch clicking into place felt like the final period at the end of a very long, very bloody sentence. He didn’t put me down.I was pressed against his chest, my legs wrapped around his waist, my arms looped loosely around his neck. I was covered in grime, sweat, and the drying blood of the man who had tried to steal everything from us. My tunic—his mother’s tunic—was ruined. But Ares held me like I was made of white porcelain.“You’re shaking,” he rumbled, his voice vibrating against my ribcage.“I’m coming down,” I whispered. My teeth chattered, just once. “The adrenaline. The Mark... it’s fading.”The silver-blue light on my hand had dimmed to a soft, rhythmic pulse, like the last embers of a dying fire. The surge of god-like power that had allowed me to snap bones and
