IRISH POV
“Let go of him, right now.”
A voice came from behind me, but what really slapped me in the face was ‘HIM’. Did he just call me him?
Damn!
Right. That’s who I am now. Not Irish, not a she. I am Idris, a he.
If I want to survive this prestigious college with my secret intact, I need to keep reminding myself of that every single second.
The guy who had been bullying me earlier didn’t wait around. He backed off and went away. I turned slowly, ready to thank my unexpected savior.
Holy God.
This boy… No, this man looked like he walked straight out of a Greek mythology book. He was more than cute, probably the most flawless face I have ever seen.
I cursed under my breath.
How on earth could someone be this unfairly handsome?
“Are you okay?” His voice dragged me back to reality.
Shit. I hoped he didn’t notice the way I had been staring, or worse, drooling. Because that would be next-level awkward.
“I’m good. Thank you,” I said quickly.
“You seem new?”
I nodded, eyes still fixed to the ground. I didn’t dare look up again. Standing this close to him, I felt even smaller than I usually did. I’d always been petite, but next to him, it was like David and Goliath, if David had boobs he was trying to tape down.
“Good,” he said, and then, just like that, turned and walked off.
Leaving me there, with two heavy-ass luggages.
Seriously?
“Couldn’t he have lent a hand?” I muttered to no one.
The main building loomed over me like a maze from a bad dream. Map in hand, I squinted at the lines and arrows like I was trying to decode ancient symbols. I’ve never been good with directions.
After what felt like hours, I finally found my way: Block D, Room 12.
I knocked once. My heart was beating faster than it should. I had no clue what kind of roommate I’d be dealing with. If they found out what I was hiding…
The door swung open, revealing a tall, lean guy with dreadlocks and a mischievous grin.
“Hey. I’m Idris. I was assigned to this room.”
He studied me. I held my breath, praying my voice hadn’t slipped into something too soft, too feminine. I’d practiced deepening my tone for weeks before coming here. Still, it wasn’t perfect.
Then he grinned and slapped my back hard. “Welcome, man! I’m Dave. Finally, I get some company in this lonely-ass room.”
“Ouch!” The word escaped before I could stop it. That hit hurt.
“Sorry, bro! Didn’t mean to go full Hulk on you.” He grabbed one of my bags and pulled it inside. “That’s my bed, and that over there is yours. Bathroom’s through that door, kitchen’s tiny but works. I’ve got football training in a few. Was just heading out when you knocked.”
And just like that, he was gone.
I dropped onto my bed with a heavy sigh. My ribs ached from the chest binder. I couldn't wait to peel it off and breathe like a human again. Thank God my chest was small enough to compress, but my hips and butt? Different story. Thank heavens for oversized jeans.
As I lay there, I heard voices echo in my head. Memories I’d tried to shove down.
“You can’t do this, Irish. What if you get caught? This is impersonation. Irish…”
I sat up fast. I needed a shower.
*********
It was my first official day as a student. I woke up early, earlier than Dave, to shower, bind, and get dressed without any risk.
Apparently, it’s tradition for new students to introduce themselves to the class. Lucky me.
My palms were sweaty as I stood at the front, facing a room full of unfamiliar faces. “Good morning, everyone. We have someone new. He will introduce himself,” the professor in glasses said kindly, turning to me. “Please, go on.”
I stepped forward. My throat went dry.
“Hi… I’m Iri…I mean, Idris.” I smiled tightly. “I’m more than excited to be here.”
The silence that followed was brutal. Eyes roamed over me, dissecting me like a biology experiment. Then someone laughed.
“Is it just me, or does he look and sound like a girl?” the boy snorted. “Oops! We’ve got a mummy’s boy in the building!”
The room exploded in laughter.
Except three people didn’t laugh: The professor, now visibly annoyed, Dave, sitting in the back, fuming, and him, the guy from yesterday.
“Morris!” the professor snapped. “Behave yourself. Idris, please take your seat.”
I turned to find my seat, only to see a girl already in it. She looked at me like I was some kind of dirt stuck to her shoe. I was about to retreat to the back when I heard that voice again.
“Sit.”
He had spoken.
He had made space beside him.
I walked over like I was floating. My heart was in my throat. I sat beside him, stiff and shocked. In my head, fireworks went off. This was peak K-drama. The prince saves the princess, except I wasn’t a princess here, not anymore.
Snap out of it, Irish. He sees you as a guy. That’s the whole point.
The rest of the day went on like a blur. I skipped lunch. Didn’t want to risk running into another bully.
But during a break between classes, it happened.
“Hey… Idris, right?” A girl cornered me, biting her lip in a way that was clearly meant to be cute.
“I think you’re so cute.”
What? Was she… flirting with me?
I blinked. “Uh… Thank you. You’re… pretty too.”
She giggled. “Really? Do you have a girlfriend? I’m 21. Probably the youngest in the class. So, do you like older girls?” She kept going, and going, and half the time I wasn’t even listening. I just wanted her hands off me. The more she leaned in, the more my stomach turned.
This was harder than I thought.
Thank God the bell rang; the break was over, and just a few more classes, we were done for the day.
But just as I was about to leave my seat for the day, it hit me, a sudden cramp. A slow, sinking feeling in my stomach, and then the realization.
No! No! No!
The damn period.
Today, of all freaking days.
And I was wearing white pants.
“Irish… I am so gone.”
IRISH POV I didn’t stay to hear the rest of it. I went over to the kitchen to get a bottle of water. It has been one hell of a discovery. Mummy spent the best part of her life gambling and resenting Mr. Smith, who apparently is my father, while he spent his time mourning his dear loved one. How pathetic. I didn’t know how to feel about all of this. Finding out my father isn’t an asshole, and that he is one hell of a fine man, made me truly forgive my mum. I mean, the man is cute. I don’t know how to act around him. I have spent almost all my life resenting him as well for what his absence did to us. I took a bottle of water and turned to go. My heart almost dropped when I bumped into Diego standing right in the kitchen. “You scared me!” I held my chest. I wanted to ask him how he got here, but that would be a silly question. The mafia king appears anytime. “Sorry about that.” I was already taking the water when I noticed him staring at me intensely. “Nigga, I know my face is
IRISH POVGrandma immediately snatched my hand away from him like his touch alone could contaminate me.“Mum, is this you?” the man said, his voice shaking slightly. “I have looked for you everywhere.”Looking closer at him, my brain finally connected the dots. I met him at the resort, the man with the messed-up love story.“I heard about Lucy’s death,” he continued softly. “I am so sorry.”Grandma’s face changed instantly.“It is your entire family that is dead!” she snapped. “My daughter is well and alive, Smith. Now get your silly self out of here before I call the cops on you!”Smith, that name again. It rang louder this time.Didn’t Mum say something about Smith being our father?I slowly turned my head back to him, then to Grandma, and gasped. No way.No actual way.“Lucy is alive?” he asked, completely thrown off. “How? I saw her grave. I even got her flowers just last month when I went visiting.”Okay.Something is very wrong here.Very, very wrong.Because right now, this is
IRISH’s POV“You look pretty.”Jimmy said it so casually, like he wasn’t capable of ruining my entire emotional stability with just one sentence. He was leaning against the table, taking a lazy bite of an apple like he had no problems in this world. What do they say about apples again?Exactly, temptation. And this one?Walking, talking temptation with zero self-control.I rolled my eyes slightly, but inside? My stupid heart did one small flip.“I was able to get hold of the person who took the video of us,” he continued, tossing the apple up and catching it like a bored rich boy. “It was Lilly. Your jealous girlfriend.”He winked.I blinked. Then blinked again. That girl. That damn girl will never mind her business. If I still had my “Idris balls” on, I would have scratched her face without blinking.“Of course it’s Lilly,” I muttered. “That girl needs a full-time job.”Jimmy chuckled softly, clearly enjoying my irritation.I didn’t even bother responding again.Instead, I turned tow
IRISH’s POV“Are you okay? What happened?”The phone almost slipped from my hand, but Nicki was fast enough to catch it before it kissed the floor. She didn’t even wait. She started going through it immediately.“Damn!” she exclaimed. “How did they even get a video of this?”She kept scrolling, her face shifting between shock and amusement.“Just breathe, okay,” she added, patting my shoulder like I was about to faint. “You weren’t called a thief or a murderer. Just some homophobic maggots calling you out. It’s nothing serious. The heart knows what it wants. There is nothing wrong with being gay.”For a second… just one second… I had to pause and mentally check my body.Because what the actual fuck is she saying?I slowly turned my head to look at her.If confusion had a face, it would be mine.I shot her a look, what are you even saying right now’?She caught it instantly and mimicked zipping her mouth with an invisible key.Good. Because if she had said one more word, I might have s
IRISH’s POV“His name is not important. He is just a sperm donor. Mum, I really hope you change this time, not you trying to scheme your way into Diego’s heart. You won’t like the outcome.”I almost added that Diego was the kind of man who could slit someone’s throat without blinking, just to scare her straight, but that would be giving away information I wasn’t ready to explain. She held my hands like we were in some emotional Nollywood scene. If she weren’t my mum, I would have rolled my eyes so hard they’d fall out.“Diego, how did you meet him? He is such a nice, handsome man.”And there she goes again. Wiggling her brows like a teenager. This woman has no shame, but I dare not say that loud.“Mum,” I said slowly, already tired, “just forget about it. Just behave and forget about Smith. You will do that for us, right?”She nodded quickly, like a child being promised sweets, then pulled me into a tight hug. Then she whispered, “I think he likes you.”I pulled back immediately. “M
JIMMY“I’m not ready to talk about her. Don’t worry, you will get to know her at the right time. So, will you help me out or not?”She shrugged and rolled her eyes.“Fine. Coincidentally, someone I know is nursing a heartbreak. She wants to prove a point to her boyfriend that she has moved on. This can work. I will set up a date tomorrow. I will get going now. Kisses.”She was gone. Looking at the bottle of champagne I ordered earlier, my mind traveled wide. I don’t even know if all of this makes sense. Is she still with him because of the promise she made, or something else? I struggled with my hair. Love makes one do crazy things. The next day, Becky was the first person to call and inform me about my meet-up with the said girl. That was faster than I thought.Hours later, I was done having breakfast, had my shower, and returned to the same restaurant, but this time, waiting for someone else. She arrived almost immediately. From the pictures and descriptions my sister gave, she was t
Granny was all smiley, like she just broke the best news of the century to me.“You can’t love Professor John, Grandma. He’s a professor at my school. Meeting him means exposing my secret, and you know what that means. Moreover, he’s not the best man for you,” I blurted out without mincing words.“
Jimmy couldn’t stop laughing, but I didn’t care. I was so focused on finding out if my cunt was now vast.Color me surprised when I found out the hole to be as tiny as ever, like I hadn’t pumped it.Nicki was right, it always goes back to normal.I dragged up my pants and got up. Jimmy was still la
IRISH:I was waiting for Diego to be out with whatever he had to say, then suddenly my phone rang. It was Jimmy. I had to excuse myself and step out of my room to answer the call.Jimmy: Are you home now, Pumpkin?Me: Yes, I am. How are Jayden and Montana?Jimmy: Thankfully, there were no major in
It was as if I was struck on a point. The little boy standing in front of me was so fine.I watched as Montana allowed Jimmy to carry him up, and for a moment, they looked… perfect together. For the sake of this cutie, I honestly hope he grants Kim’s wish.I grew up without the so-called “complete
