Syria’s POV

“Hey, how are you feeling right now?”

Kael’s voice jolted me back to reality when he swung the door open. He entered with a tray of food in hand.

He placed the tray on the side table, and then sat on the bed's edge next to me.

He afterwards leaned closer, pushing some stray strands of hair aside from my face. His gaze clung to mine as if we hadn't reunited in ages.

“I’m fine… usually, at least,” I said, attempting to sound composed.

“How is the preparation coming along?”

He shifted slightly backward, yet remained close enough for me to sense his warmth.

“Everything is progressing,” he stated. “Your servants are working tirelessly, and the citizens are eager for it to begin. A few of the guards are currently on patrol to ensure that no one disrupts.”

I reached for his hand and held it tight, like I needed him to keep me. He looked at me, a little startled.
