Syria’s POV

“She’s dead. There’s nothing you can do anymore.”

My heart was pounding so hard it hurt. I just stood there, staring at my grandmother’s lifeless body.

My hand, the one that had been clutching her arm, went limp. I lost my grip, and her body dropped heavily to the floor with a dull thud.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him slowly stepping closer.

My throat felt parch when I finally forced myself to speak.

“Y-You killed her,” I whispered, my voice cracking. “You killed your own mother.”

He didn’t even flinch. His eyes were empty, almost bored, as if what he’d done meant absolutely nothing.

My chest tightened with disgust and sorrow. My legs moved without thinking, trying to put distance between us.

I kept retreating, one step after another, until suddenly, my heel hit something solid on the ground.

My gaze dropped automatically, hoping he hadn’t noticed. There, partly hidden beneath the edge of the blanket, was a silver cufflink.

My heart skipped a beat.
