NATH

The last thing I need is for someone to die during the company retreat. That kind of scandal would stain my leadership and unravel everything I’m building.

So when I hear the news and end up at the hospital, I brace myself for damage control.

What I don’t expect… is to be called someone’s fiancé.

I blink in disbelief, frozen, as everyone in the emergency room turns to look at me like I just grew four heads.

The crazy woman looks dazed now, eyes wide, a little too fragile. There’s something in her face...panic? grief? confusion? I can’t tell. But whatever it is, it silences me.

Before I can say a word, Mike pulls me aside like we're old college friends or something. His voice is low and rushed. “Look, I know that was crazy. But I have a reason, okay? Just hear me out.”

I fold my arms and wait.

He glances toward her. “She wasn’t supposed to come. I planned to spend the whole retreat with Olivia and win the games. But now she’s here...Winter is my fiancée. We're supp

TREASURE Oh no. Oh no, oh no, oh no. What have I done? I stand there watching Winter scream at Mike in the middle of the hallway, and my brain is doing that thing where it plays a very loud alarm sound on repeat. ABORT MISSION. ABORT MISSION. THIS WAS A TERRIBLE IDEA. If I had known it would escalate to this extent, I would not have done what I did. Well, okay, that's a lie. I probably still would have done it because Mike is a garbage human who deserved to be exposed. But I would have maybe... I don't know... prepared better? Warned Winter first? Not told her right before she was about to murder him in public? I had only tried to get Winter to give up on Mike completely. Forever. No take-backs. No "but what if he changes" nonsense. Just a clean break. If I had known she would be this affected, I would have at least picked a better location. Like maybe not in the middle of a resort full of people with phones who are definitely recording this. My heart is pounding so

WINTER I wake up groggy, my body still stressed out from the fall. How long was I out? I blink at the ceiling, trying to remember where I am. Hotel room. Resort. Fell down a hill. Nearly died. Got 100 points. Yeah, that tracks. I look around the room. Nath isn't here. The bathroom door is open. The room is empty. Where is he? I sit up slowly, testing my body. The doctor was right—the rest and medication helped. I still hurt, but it's manageable now. Not the "I just tumbled down a hill and every bone in my body wants to file a complaint" level of pain I was expecting. More like "I got hit by a small car instead of a large truck" level of pain. Progress. I swing my legs over the side of the bed and immediately regret it. Ow. Okay, maybe not that much progress. I haul myself out of bed like an old woman and shuffle toward the bathroom. My reflection in the mirror is... concerning. I look like I fought a bear and lost. There's a bruise on my cheek. My hair is doing

MIKE After the game, I head back to my hotel room to wash up. The moment I walk through the door, I see Olivia. She's sitting in a corner of the room holding a plate of food. But she's not eating it. She's just sitting there, glaring at me. "Olivia, I need to..." Before I can finish, she hurls the plate at me. It shatters against my arm. Food splatters everywhere. A sharp edge slices my wrist. "You eliminated me!" she screams. "You! The man who was supposed to protect me! How did it work out for you, huh? Chasing after Winter like a dog when she doesn't even remember you! You didn't just make a fool of me—you made a fool of yourself! And that's what you are—nothing but a fool!" Something inside me snaps. I cross the room in two steps and slap her hard across the face. The sound echoes in the room. Olivia stumbles back, hand flying to her cheek, staring at me in shock. I look down at my wrist. Blood is seeping from the cut where the plate hit me. "You were a mi

TREASURE When I was testing Nath earlier, when I pulled my zipper lower, my heart was racing like crazy. That was as far as I could go. I couldn't go any lower than that. 'Come on, Nath. Just say no. Just pass the test and everything will be perfect.' I kept chanting inwardly. When he finally refused, when he actually chose loyalty to Winter instead, I was so excited I almost tackled him with a hug. But that would've been inappropriate. And weird. So I sat down instead and tried to look calm and composed. Like I hadn't just been having a mild heart attack. Looking at him, I thought, 'Winter, you finally got a good man. Well, maybe he has other flaws you might not like. Maybe I'm wrong about him. But the man I'm looking at right now seems to be really in love with you. And that's what I want for you more than anything—for the man you love to love you just as much.' --- Later, when Nath offers to help me with my company, I refuse. Of course, it's not that I don't w

NATH "Don't do this," I say to Treasure, my voice firm. "Please don't do this." She takes a step back and reaches for the zipper of her top. She begins to undo it slowly. "Don't worry. You'll change your mind once you see what I have in store for you." "Enough!" I yell, stopping her. "Do not take off your clothes, Treasure. I sincerely cannot believe this. How can you betray Winter like this?" "Why are we going around in circles?" Treasure asks. "This is simple—either give me what I want, or you don't and face the consequences." I nod, my jaw tight. "Fine. Since you've made it clear, I'll take my chances with the truth. I absolutely detest people like you, Treasure, and I'm highly disappointed in you. Take note of this—I would never, ever betray Winter for anyone. I'd rather go right now and tell her the truth than have anything to do with you. Maybe then she'll realize how much of a snake you are." I turn, yank open the door, and start to walk out. But then I hear clappi

  • The Goodbye He Never Saw Coming    Chapter Forty Eight

NATH After we say goodbye to Winter, I lean against the wall outside with my arms crossed, thinking about what Winter said about her excitement to meet the chairman. Treasure looks at me curiously. "Are you waiting here?" "Yeah," I tell her. "Once Winter falls into a deep sleep, I'll go back in and take a shower." "Where else would you go anyway?" she asks with a grin. Fair point. "Don't you need a doctor too?" Treasure continues. "You fell a few times. And that cramp looked painful." I shake my head. "I'm good. I've had worse. Mike, on the other hand..." I pause, thinking about how hard he hit the ground. "Mike might need a doctor. But not me." Treasure laughs, and we stand there in comfortable silence for a moment. Then one of the Valcour employees—a young guy in a resort uniform—approaches me with a polite nod. "Mr. Cole? There's someone looking for you. They're waiting outside the hotel." Someone looking for me? I frown. "Who?" "A woman. She didn't give her
