NATH

My driver slows the car near the gate of Paradise Resort, glancing at me through the mirror.

“Sir, we’ll be arriving shortly.”

I nod. “Stop here.”

Kyle, my assistant, shoots me a confused look from the seat beside me in the back. Up front, Ace, my longtime bodyguard and best friend, twists around too.

“What’s going on, sir?” Kyle asks.

I smile, just a little. “I’m walking the rest of the way.”

They stare at me like I’ve just grown a tail.

Look, I hate this kind of thing. Tropical retreats. Flimsy themed events. Coworkers pretending to like each other over cocktails and spa treatments. It’s all so… performative. I prefer boardrooms, hard numbers, and silent dominance. Not sunset yoga and beachside karaoke.

But I just became chairman. My first act isn’t going to be hiding in some fancy suite while my employees lie through their teeth about corporate loyalty. I want to see everything... the lazy ones, the gossipers, the sycophants. Up close. Unfiltered.

“I’m blending in,”

  • The Goodbye He Never Saw Coming    Chapter Thirteen

NATH I step out of the bathroom, towel draped around my neck, and stop short. Winter is pacing back and forth like a soldier about to march into battle. “What is it?” I ask. “I’m doomed,” she blurts. My brows knit. “Why do you say that?” She waves the pamphlet at me as though it’s her death warrant. “Tomorrow’s competition is salsa dancing. Salsa, Nath! I can’t dance to save my life. I’m going to bury us in front of the entire crowd.” I glance at the page, then back at her. “You think I’m any better? I’m not exactly a good dancer either. But…” I scratch the back of my neck. “I know a thing or two. And since I already agreed to do this with you, I’ll put in my best. If you can’t manage, just hold onto me and follow my lead.” Her face softens with relief. She actually thanks me, like I just pulled her back from the edge of a cliff. I murmur a quiet “good night” and stretch out on the bed. She slips in beside me, lying on her side, staring. I can feel her eyes tracing me,

WINTER Back inside, I rejoin the ladies. “Winter,” I say when they ask my name. “Nice to meet you.” As we chat, I lean in. “So… I heard something about a contest? I thought we were just here to have fun.” One groans dramatically. “Ugh, life is so unfair. If I had a partner, I’d be in every game. But I do have my eye on someone. If he says yes, we’re entering together.” “What games?” I ask, feigning innocence. “I mean, explain it. Just hearing about it is exciting.” Another girl leans toward me, phone in hand. “Here, let me show you something.” She scrolls, taps, then spins the screen my way. “You must have missed it. Valcour posted that the couple games and activities taking place here—there’s an actual prize for the final winner.” I squint at the post. “Prize?” “Yeah,” she says, eyes sparkling like she’s sharing state secrets. “You either get a big cash reward or a job. If you don’t already work for Valcour International, they’ll find a way to fix you in. If you don’t w

  • The Goodbye He Never Saw Coming    Chapter Eleven

WINTER “What’s the problem, mister?” I say, tilting my head at Mike. His eyes flare. “Mister? Am I the one you’re calling mister?” Nath pushes himself up from his seat, but I’m not letting Mike off that easy. “What am I supposed to call you?” I shrug. “It’s not like I know your name.” He opens his mouth, ready to fire back....then stops. I watch it click in his head, the reminder that he’s supposed to be a stranger to me, not my fiancé. The way he freezes is almost funny. I fold my arms, staring him down. “What? Forget your place?” The others notice the tension now. “Yeah, what happened?” one of them pipes up. “Why’d you interrupt them? Mike, what’s wrong with you?” Olivia glides over, all sugary concern. “What’s the problem, honey?” Mike clears his throat. “Well… their time was already up.” “I wasn’t aware there was a timer,” I say, raising a brow. “No one said anything about the lap dance being timed… or is there something I’m missing?” A few people exchange

  • The Goodbye He Never Saw Coming    Chapter Ten

WINTER The first thing I do when Nath takes me to the hotel room is head straight for the bathroom. My clothes are still damp from when I fell into the pool earlier, and the thought alone makes my skin crawl. I’m a germaphobe, and chlorine mixed with whatever unholy cocktail of bacteria lurks in public water is my personal nightmare. My hair feels heavy, my skin prickly, and all I can think about is standing under a hot shower until I feel human again. After the day I’ve had, it feels like the only way to wipe the exhaustion from my body. My stomach is also growling like it’s auditioning for a horror movie, but food will have to wait. I’ve been through too much since arriving... too much running, too much humiliation, and apparently, too much betrayal, for me to eat before scrubbing my entire existence clean. I’m halfway into the bathroom when I hear voices outside. Nath’s deep, steady tone and another, sharper one I’d know anywhere. Mike. My heart skips. Without thinking,

  • The Goodbye He Never Saw Coming    Chapter Nine

NATH I stand by the door for a beat, staring at the wall, trying to process what just happened. And then the ridiculous thought hits me...Wait… I’m supposed to be her fiancé. Why am I also freaking out? I pace, running a hand over my face, replaying that split-second image of wet skin, water glistening over curves I shouldn’t be noticing. When the door finally opens, she steps out, fully dressed and glaring like she’s ready to stab me with the hairdryer. Her foot slips. I don’t think...I just move. My arms go around her, steadying her before she hits the floor. She freezes in my hold, her wide eyes darting up to mine… then dropping to my bare chest. For a moment, I swear she’s staring at my abs longer than necessary. I let her go. “Why did you scream?” She narrows her eyes. “Why did you open the door while I was bathing?” A slow smile tugs at my lips. “Come on, I’m your fiancé. Isn’t that normal? We've been living together for years before we came here. Not a big deal, right?

  • The Goodbye He Never Saw Coming    Chapter Eight

NATH The last thing I need is for someone to die during the company retreat. That kind of scandal would stain my leadership and unravel everything I’m building. So when I hear the news and end up at the hospital, I brace myself for damage control. What I don’t expect… is to be called someone’s fiancé. I blink in disbelief, frozen, as everyone in the emergency room turns to look at me like I just grew four heads. The crazy woman looks dazed now, eyes wide, a little too fragile. There’s something in her face...panic? grief? confusion? I can’t tell. But whatever it is, it silences me. Before I can say a word, Mike pulls me aside like we're old college friends or something. His voice is low and rushed. “Look, I know that was crazy. But I have a reason, okay? Just hear me out.” I fold my arms and wait. He glances toward her. “She wasn’t supposed to come. I planned to spend the whole retreat with Olivia and win the games. But now she’s here...Winter is my fiancée. We're supp
