WINTER

I smile at Olivia like she's a puppy that just peed on an expensive rug. Sweet, but oh so disappointing.

"Actually," I say, turning to the spokesperson with the confidence of someone who just drew a royal flush, "I have evidence to back up my claims."

The room goes so quiet I can hear Olivia's eyelashes batting in panic. Mike shifts in his seat, suddenly looking uncomfortable. The six fake witnesses exchange nervous glances like they're realizing they might have picked the wrong side.

Nath leans forward slightly, and I catch the hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

I think back to earlier today when I stepped out of the hotel room for what I thought would be a peaceful stroll around the pool. My new phone was still fresh in my hands, and I'd been excited about testing its camera features. The evening air was warm against my skin, and I felt like I could breathe.

That's when one of my new friends had approached me, her phone clutched in her hands like she was ho

  • The Goodbye He Never Saw Coming    Chapter Thirty Three

MIKE This is torture. I sit here pretending to focus on Olivia's lips while my whole world crumbles across the contest area. Winter is kissing that bastard Nathaniel like he's the only man alive, and I swear my heart is going to explode. She looks so lost in him. So completely absorbed. The way she's kissing him—that's how she used to kiss me. That passion, that heat, that complete surrender. It belongs to me. My hands shake as I watch Nath's fingers tangle in her hair. That's my hair to touch. My woman to kiss. I tried to stop this. I begged Winter not to participate in this stupid kissing contest, but she looked at me like I was some stranger bothering her. Like I meant nothing. She's going to hate herself when she remembers. Winter loves me more than her own life—she tells me every day. When her memory comes back and she realizes what she's been doing with him, what she's been letting him do to her body, she'll be devastated. But what if it's too late by then? The t

OLIVIA What Mike doesn't know is that I have no intention of letting him go back to Winter. Once I have what I want, I'll find a way to keep him permanently. Winter can rot for all I care. "And Winter's family needs to know about her memory problem." Mike adds, just when I think the conversation is over. "Just don't do anything crazy," I say quickly. "We need to be smart about this." "Don't worry. I've got everything under control." The next morning, Mike seems much more manageable. He's actually trying not to look like Winter is the only thing on his mind, and I start feeling confident about our chances. But then, right before the kissing contest, I watch him walk over to Winter again. My blood starts boiling like lava. After everything we discussed last night, after all the lies I fed him, he's still chasing after her like a pathetic little dog. It's insulting. I'm standing right here—beautiful, intelligent, willing to do whatever it takes—and he's obsessing over Wi

OLIVIAWhen Winter revealed that I was the one who pushed her into the pool and made her lose her memories, I wanted to strangle her with my bare hands. The little witch set a trap for me, and I walked right into it like an amateur. The smile on her face still makes my blood boil. I should have crushed her when I had the chance. But what really annoys me is Mike's pathetic reaction. The moment I get back to our room, he's already grabbing my stuff and throwing it around like he's playing basketball with my designer clothes. "Pack your things," he says without even looking at me. "I told you to do this earlier, but since you didn't listen, I'm helping you now." "Mike, please just listen to me..." "No." His voice cuts through my words like a knife through butter. "I'm done with you. I can't share a room with someone who tried to kill my fiancée." I watch him toss my clothes and makeup into a pile like they're garbage. What a drama queen. "It wasn't like that! I never meant

NATH Last night feels like a lifetime ago, but the weight of what happened still sits heavy in my chest as I watch Winter celebrate our victories on the track. The text message had come at the worst possible time. But some things can't wait, and my nephew's surgery was one of them. My sister Emma is my twin, though she insists on calling herself my "elder sister" because she arrived three minutes before me. We've always been close, but her son Jake has become one of the most important people in my world. When Emma told me about the kidney stone surgery, when Jake asked if I'd be "there" with him even though I couldn't physically be present, there was no question I'd find a way. That's why I'd left Winter, found a quiet spot with good reception, and connected to the hospital's video system. For two hours, I watched my nephew's surgery on my phone screen, my heart hammering every time the monitors beeped or the surgeons paused to consult. When it was over—successful, thank God

WINTER I spot Nath talking intensely with Ace in the corner. Whatever they're discussing looks serious, and I make a mental note to ask about it later. "Just listen to me for one second," Mike says, stepping in front of me with genuine desperation. "Don't do this kissing contest." I actually laugh. "Who do you think you are? You want to tell me not to kiss my own fiancé?" "You're going to regret this," he says, and there's something almost panicked in his voice. "This will be filmed, posted everywhere. You never know who might see it. When you get your memory back, you'll wish you could undo it." His face is flushed from the race and from whatever internal struggle he's having. "Please, Winter. I'm begging you. Don't do something you can't take back." I stare at him for a long moment, letting him think I might actually consider his pathetic plea. Then I lift my hand and give him the middle finger. "If this isn't clear enough, then fuck off." Mike's face cycles throu

  • The Goodbye He Never Saw Coming    Chapter Twenty Eight

WINTER The crew members descend on us like surgical technicians, armed with heavy-duty Velcro bands and the kind of serious expressions usually reserved for handling explosives. I watch as they bind the contestants to their partners with practiced efficiency. One crew member, a wiry guy who looks like he moonlights as a CrossFit trainer, approaches Nath and me with what looks like professional restraint gear. "Right leg to left leg, right arm to left arm," he announces, like he's reading from a manual. My right leg gets secured to Nath's left with a thick band that's surprisingly comfortable despite looking like medieval torture equipment. Then my right arm is bound to Nath's left arm with similar gear, creating a human three-legged race on steroids. "This feels very committed," I tell Nath as the crew member checks our bindings. "Good thing I like you." He laughs, testing the range of motion. "At least we practiced coordination." I look around at the other couples getting
