Chapter 1

By the time I came out with my bags packed, the chat on the tablet was still blowing up. They'd moved on from how boring I was to barbecue plans for the next day, then to which spots had the best food. There were 99 new messages and counting.

After that thread died down, Wade Kirby sent one last message.

"This is what life's supposed to feel like. The air's literally fresher without Cece around."

Noelle Frasier replied, "Cece's such a buzzkill. Hanging out with her is no fun."

Sebastian Radford dropped a link to a barbecue place. "Take a look at the menu and see what you want."

Wade wrote, "I want grilled calamari. Cece's allergic to seafood, so every time we eat with her, I can never order half the stuff I want."

Noelle followed up, "If Cece's not coming, I'm ordering everything extra-hot. Nobody has a problem with that, right?"

Sebastian replied, "Go for it."

I stood in front of the couch, staring at the tablet.

Noelle and Wade had been my friends since we were kids. Because our preferences never lined up, I was always the one adjusting.

I was allergic to seafood, so whenever the group went to a seafood buffet, I'd just pick at the fries on the side. I couldn't handle spice, so every time they wanted heat, I'd spend the whole meal picking around the mild options and drowning everything in water.

I always thought that's what friendship was. We'd meet each other halfway and make small sacrifices. But in the end, in a group of friends, I was still the one left out, the one who never quite fit.

The messages kept rolling in. Noelle wrote, "Oh, and Sebastian, make sure you hide your posts from Cece this time. Last time she almost found out."

I froze.

A week ago, Sebastian had posted a photo on Instagram. The background was that barbecue joint on the west side, and front and center were three glasses clinking together. One of the hands in the shot was wearing a bracelet that looked a lot like the one I'd given Wade for his birthday.

The four of us had been playing cards together at the time. I asked casually, "Is that you and Wade in the post? Who's the third person?"

All three of them went still at the same time. Noelle's eyes darted to Sebastian before she could stop herself, surprise written all over her face.

Sebastian didn't look at me. He just tossed a card my way, one I happened to need, and said flatly, "No, just a coworker. You don't know them. Focus on the game."

I'd just won that round, so I let it go and didn't think about it again.

Looking back now, the signs had been so obvious. I just trusted them too much to believe they'd ever lie to me.

My phone buzzed. It was a text from the venue coordinator.

"Ms. Ward, once the engagement venue is canceled, the reservation cannot be reinstated. Are you sure you'd like to proceed?"

I didn't hesitate. "Yes. Cancel it."

If they thought having me around made things feel crowded, then I'd just remove myself from their lives.

I took the tablet back into the bedroom. The moment I shut the door, a message from my boss, Max Delaney, popped up.

"Cecilia, are you sure you don't want that regional lead position in the Belcourt office?"

I paused. But two more messages came through right after.

"I know it means relocating overseas for two years, but the compensation package is excellent."

"You seemed pretty interested when I first brought it up. Think it over."

  • The Group Chat That Ended Us   Chapter 11

Sebastian ended up renting a short-term place nearby and didn't leave.I didn't ask why he was still in the country, and I didn't care how long his visa would hold out. Every day, he showed up outside my apartment building, or in front of my office, or at the grocery store I always went to.Sometimes he tried to talk to me, and sometimes he just stood at a distance. I ignored him every single time.Sonia asked me who the man was."No idea," I said. "Probably a lost tourist."A month and a half later, Sebastian finally stopped showing up. I assumed he'd come to his senses and gone home.I found out later that it was because Wade had gotten into serious trouble. His father's company was under investigation for financial crimes, and the entire business had been frozen.Every property, car, and bank account under Wade's name was seized overnight. He went from a trust-fund kid who spent money like water to someone buried in debt with nothing to his name.Sebastian had to fly back to

Sebastian quickly said, "I shouldn't have said those things. I shouldn't have let them talk about you like that. I—""You've apologized plenty of times," I cut in.He looked up at me, confusion in his eyes."Every time you forgot my birthday, you apologized. Every time you bailed on me at the last minute, you apologized. Every time you let Noelle take my place, you apologized."You always sounded so sincere about it, and every single time, I believed you. But you never once actually changed."You never thought there was anything wrong with what you were doing. You just didn't like seeing me upset. As long as I said 'it's fine,' you could go right back to what you were doing with a clear conscience."I paused and looked him straight in the eye. "This time, I don't want to say it's fine."Sebastian was completely speechless. He stood there, his lips moving without making a sound, his eyes growing redder by the second. It was a long time before he managed to get anything out. "Then

"Sebastian." I cut him off.My voice was so quiet it nearly got lost in the wind."Do you think I left because I was throwing a tantrum?"He went still."Do you think the reason I haven't contacted you in months is that I've been waiting for you to come find me?"He didn't answer, but the look on his face said everything. That was exactly what he thought. He thought I was sulking, that I'd eventually get over it.He assumed that if he flew all the way out here and humbled himself enough to ask me to come back, I'd nod and say "okay" the way I always did.I shifted the grocery bag to my other hand and took a long breath. "Sebastian, do you remember your last birthday?"He hadn't expected me to bring that up. It took him a second before he said, "Yeah.""I got up at 6:00 am to make you breakfast. You said you needed to go pick up Wade and Noelle and told me to meet you all at the restaurant on my own. You were two hours late."His expression shifted."When I got to the restaur

My new social circle was slowly taking shape. There was a woman at the office named Sonia Decker who struck up a conversation with me on my very first day."You're the one who got sent over straight from headquarters? That's amazing. I looked through your portfolio and your design style is really unique. A few of us are planning to check out the flea market this weekend if you want to come."I started eating lunch with them and talking shop about design. The days blurred together, and I rarely thought about Sebastian. Or maybe it was more accurate to say I made a deliberate effort not to.Every once in a while, late at night when everything was quiet, I'd lie there staring at the ceiling and let the memories drift back.I'd think about how he scoured every store in the city to track down that out-of-print art book when he was first pursuing me, or how we used to sit on the campus lawn on warm evenings in college and he'd tell me he was going to marry me after graduation.I'd remem

In those ten days, I hadn't sent him a single message or made a single call. He'd messaged me on every social media account I had, and none of them went through. He tried calling me from a new number, and I let it ring once before hanging up and blocking that one too. He tried going through friends to reach my dad, and my dad gave the same answer every time. "Cece will come home when she's ready."During all of this, Noelle put on a bigger show of concern than anyone, checking in with Sebastian almost every day for updates."What is Cece's problem? If something's wrong, why can't she just talk about it like a normal person instead of making everyone worry?"Sebastian, you've done everything you can. She's the one who won't pick up or text back. That's not on you."Don't be so hard on yourself. She'll probably come around after a few months overseas."One day Sebastian suddenly looked up at her and asked, "Why did she block all three of us?"Noelle's expression stiffened for a se

Sebastian didn't answer. He just flipped the tablet over and set it facedown on the nightstand. That night, he called every friend we had in common. He tried my dad's place too.My dad picked up and said flatly, "Whatever Cece decides is her business."Then he hung up. That was how he found out Dad had known about my decision to leave all along and hadn't tried to stop me.The next day, Sebastian went to my office. Someone in HR told him I'd submitted my resignation a month ago and that my exit paperwork had been finalized the previous week.He didn't believe it and insisted they check again. The HR manager, visibly annoyed, pulled up the system records and showed him. The submission date was right there in black and white, from one month ago.A month ago, while he'd been huddled in the group chat with Noelle and Wade figuring out where to go drinking that weekend, I'd been finishing my resignation. While he was complaining about me "making a fuss over nothing", I was applying f
