Chapter 2

مؤلف: Arya Sue
I stared at those two messages for a long time.

The first time Mr. Delaney had offered me that position, I turned it down without hesitation. Sebastian said the four of us should stay in the same city so we could always be there for each other. He said friends who clicked on every level didn't come around often.

So I turned down the transfer from headquarters twice and stayed.

Now I realized I was the only one who'd stayed for the sake of a future together. The three of them already had a future that didn't include me.

I snapped out of it and texted my boss back. "I'll take it."

Mr. Delaney replied instantly. "Good. Once your engagement is done, come in anytime to start the paperwork."

I stared at the word "engagement" and let out a bitter laugh. There wasn't going to be an engagement.

After I finished replying, I picked the tablet back up. The messages were still refreshing.

I tapped into the chat history and scrolled all the way back, past over 2,000 messages. The earliest one was from four years ago, when Sebastian and I had been officially together for less than a month.

Wade had sent the first message in the group. "Seriously, what do you even see in Cece?"

Noelle followed up with a laughing emoji. "Right? She's so boring. All she does is work and study. Isn't it dull dating her?"

Sebastian's reply didn't come until a while later. Based on the timestamp, we'd been on a date at the movies. His response was short. "It's fine. She's a good fit."

The chat went quiet for a minute before Wade sent back a question mark. "A good fit? What does that mean?"

This time Sebastian replied fast. "She's low-maintenance, doesn't cause drama, and has a stable job. My parents like her too."

Noelle jumped in right away. "Hahaha. So basically she's easy to keep around?"

Wade lost it. "That doesn't sound like dating at all."

Sebastian sent a shrug emoji. "Might as well marry someone. Finding the right fit matters more than anything."

I stared at those two lines for a long time without saying a word.

It hit me that Sebastian really had rarely ever said he liked me. He almost never said he loved me. He'd barely ever posted a single photo of us together on social media.

Back then, I told myself he was just the slow-to-warm-up type and that some people just weren't good at showing affection. Now I knew it wasn't that he couldn't say it. I just wasn't worth saying it to.

Further down, Noelle had posted a photo of the three of them at an amusement park. She was hanging off Sebastian's arm, and Wade was throwing up a peace sign next to them.

Noelle had written underneath it, "No Cecilia Ward today!"

The other two replied one after the other.

"Bliss."

"When's the next one?"

I glanced at the date. That day, I'd texted Sebastian asking why he didn't want to go out that weekend. He told me he was swamped with work and had to go into the office.

I kept scrolling in silence through more threads, more photos, more hangouts I never knew about.

They'd gone camping by the river, road-tripped to concerts out of town, rang in the New Year together, and celebrated birthdays together. And every single time, the thread ended the same way.

"No Cecilia Ward today!"

For five years, I hadn't been excluded from just one outing. I'd been excluded from all of them.

I set the tablet down and let out a long breath, then booked a flight to Belcourt for the next morning.

The moment I finished paying, a private message from Noelle popped up on my phone. "I'm so sorry, babe! Something came up tonight and I can't come with you to try on engagement dresses!"

I'd just typed back "Okay" when Sebastian pushed open the bedroom door.

"What are you looking at on the tablet?"

"Nothing."

He hummed. "Something came up at work tonight. Let's push the dress fitting to tomorrow."

I blinked and glanced down at the tablet. Sure enough, in the three-person group, Noelle had just written, "I'm out! It's all on Sebastian now! Barbecue night, let's go!"

  • The Group Chat That Ended Us   Chapter 11

Sebastian ended up renting a short-term place nearby and didn't leave.I didn't ask why he was still in the country, and I didn't care how long his visa would hold out. Every day, he showed up outside my apartment building, or in front of my office, or at the grocery store I always went to.Sometimes he tried to talk to me, and sometimes he just stood at a distance. I ignored him every single time.Sonia asked me who the man was."No idea," I said. "Probably a lost tourist."A month and a half later, Sebastian finally stopped showing up. I assumed he'd come to his senses and gone home.I found out later that it was because Wade had gotten into serious trouble. His father's company was under investigation for financial crimes, and the entire business had been frozen.Every property, car, and bank account under Wade's name was seized overnight. He went from a trust-fund kid who spent money like water to someone buried in debt with nothing to his name.Sebastian had to fly back to

Sebastian quickly said, "I shouldn't have said those things. I shouldn't have let them talk about you like that. I—""You've apologized plenty of times," I cut in.He looked up at me, confusion in his eyes."Every time you forgot my birthday, you apologized. Every time you bailed on me at the last minute, you apologized. Every time you let Noelle take my place, you apologized."You always sounded so sincere about it, and every single time, I believed you. But you never once actually changed."You never thought there was anything wrong with what you were doing. You just didn't like seeing me upset. As long as I said 'it's fine,' you could go right back to what you were doing with a clear conscience."I paused and looked him straight in the eye. "This time, I don't want to say it's fine."Sebastian was completely speechless. He stood there, his lips moving without making a sound, his eyes growing redder by the second. It was a long time before he managed to get anything out. "Then

"Sebastian." I cut him off.My voice was so quiet it nearly got lost in the wind."Do you think I left because I was throwing a tantrum?"He went still."Do you think the reason I haven't contacted you in months is that I've been waiting for you to come find me?"He didn't answer, but the look on his face said everything. That was exactly what he thought. He thought I was sulking, that I'd eventually get over it.He assumed that if he flew all the way out here and humbled himself enough to ask me to come back, I'd nod and say "okay" the way I always did.I shifted the grocery bag to my other hand and took a long breath. "Sebastian, do you remember your last birthday?"He hadn't expected me to bring that up. It took him a second before he said, "Yeah.""I got up at 6:00 am to make you breakfast. You said you needed to go pick up Wade and Noelle and told me to meet you all at the restaurant on my own. You were two hours late."His expression shifted."When I got to the restaur

My new social circle was slowly taking shape. There was a woman at the office named Sonia Decker who struck up a conversation with me on my very first day."You're the one who got sent over straight from headquarters? That's amazing. I looked through your portfolio and your design style is really unique. A few of us are planning to check out the flea market this weekend if you want to come."I started eating lunch with them and talking shop about design. The days blurred together, and I rarely thought about Sebastian. Or maybe it was more accurate to say I made a deliberate effort not to.Every once in a while, late at night when everything was quiet, I'd lie there staring at the ceiling and let the memories drift back.I'd think about how he scoured every store in the city to track down that out-of-print art book when he was first pursuing me, or how we used to sit on the campus lawn on warm evenings in college and he'd tell me he was going to marry me after graduation.I'd remem

In those ten days, I hadn't sent him a single message or made a single call. He'd messaged me on every social media account I had, and none of them went through. He tried calling me from a new number, and I let it ring once before hanging up and blocking that one too. He tried going through friends to reach my dad, and my dad gave the same answer every time. "Cece will come home when she's ready."During all of this, Noelle put on a bigger show of concern than anyone, checking in with Sebastian almost every day for updates."What is Cece's problem? If something's wrong, why can't she just talk about it like a normal person instead of making everyone worry?"Sebastian, you've done everything you can. She's the one who won't pick up or text back. That's not on you."Don't be so hard on yourself. She'll probably come around after a few months overseas."One day Sebastian suddenly looked up at her and asked, "Why did she block all three of us?"Noelle's expression stiffened for a se

Sebastian didn't answer. He just flipped the tablet over and set it facedown on the nightstand. That night, he called every friend we had in common. He tried my dad's place too.My dad picked up and said flatly, "Whatever Cece decides is her business."Then he hung up. That was how he found out Dad had known about my decision to leave all along and hadn't tried to stop me.The next day, Sebastian went to my office. Someone in HR told him I'd submitted my resignation a month ago and that my exit paperwork had been finalized the previous week.He didn't believe it and insisted they check again. The HR manager, visibly annoyed, pulled up the system records and showed him. The submission date was right there in black and white, from one month ago.A month ago, while he'd been huddled in the group chat with Noelle and Wade figuring out where to go drinking that weekend, I'd been finishing my resignation. While he was complaining about me "making a fuss over nothing", I was applying f
