Dr. Kaelen Thorne-Vane

The gunshot echoed through the stone corridors like a crack of thunder, the sharp metallic smell of cordite cutting through the damp air.

My heart didn’t just leap into my throat. It stopped.

“Wren!” I roared.

I didn’t care about the guards scrambling through the dark foyer or the faint siren wailing from the distant gatehouse. Every instinct I possessed every brutal impulse inherited from a bloodline of men who had fought to the death took control.

I charged into the dark frame of Julian’s office just in time to see his shadow dragging Wren toward the narrow archway behind the mahogany desk. His right arm was wrapped around her neck, while his left hand pressed the heavy revolver against her jaw.

Wren’s sapphire eyes found mine in the dim, flickering candlelight. They were wide with adrenaline, but there was no surrender in them. Her body strained against Julian’s grip with terrifying determination.

Julian saw me.

His bloodshot eyes widened with frantic excitement.

“Step back, Doctor!” he screamed, his voice cracking. “Step back or I put a bullet through her”

I didn’t let him finish.

I lunged across the desk, grabbed the heavy brass lamp, and hurled it straight at his head.

Julian flinched, ducking instinctively. That split second was all Wren needed.

She drove the sharp heel of her shoe down onto his foot and slammed her elbow into his ribs.

Julian gasped and staggered backward through the open doorway of the private servant stairwell.

Wren tore herself free and stumbled straight into my arms.

I caught her against my chest, wrapping my heavy coat around her. With my other hand, I slammed the iron access door shut behind Julian as he fell back onto the narrow stone landing.

BANG!

Julian’s desperate shot splintered the heavy oak face of the door from the other side, but the iron frame held.

Then, deep within the walls, the estate’s emergency system reacted.

A loud pneumatic hiss traveled through the stonework.

The automatic steel fire doors installed decades ago to protect the manor’s historic archives had been triggered.

A massive blast door groaned overhead before crashing down into the threshold with a deafening, floor-shaking THUD.

The magnetic locks engaged.

CLACK.

CLACK.

CLACK.

Then the mechanical hum died.

The backup circuit had shorted.

Absolute darkness swallowed us.

No light.

No draft.

No sound from the study or stairwell.

We were trapped inside the four-foot-wide stone passage between the office wall and the archive vault, completely sealed off from the rest of Ashford Manor.

“Kaelen?”

Wren’s voice came out as a quiet, ragged gasp in the suffocating darkness.

“I’m here,” I rasped.

My voice was thick with adrenaline and a violent relief that made my hands shake.

In the pitch black, every other sense became painfully sharp.

I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face, but I could feel her.

Her back was pressed against my chest. Her breathing was fast against my arm. Her long, damp raven hair smelled faintly of rain and night air as it brushed against my neck and jaw.

I turned her around in the narrow space.

My hands found her waist, then moved up her ribs until I could cup her face.

My palms were warm against her cool skin. I brushed my thumbs over her cheekbones, feeling the frantic pulse beneath her jaw.

“Are you hurt?” I growled softly. “Did he touch you? Did the bullet get you?”

“I’m fine,” she whispered.

Her voice trembled, not from fear, but from the electric rush of surviving.

Her hands flew to the lapels of my soaked jacket, gripping them tightly as she pulled herself closer.

“I’m fine, Kaelen. The files… I have the Mayfair vault key. I have the ledgers.”

“To hell with the files,” I breathed.

I lowered my forehead against hers.

“I thought I lost you when that shot went off.”

“You didn’t lose me,” she whispered.

Her fingers slid up my chest and curled around the back of my neck.

“You’re never going to lose me.”

The closeness was overwhelming.

There was nowhere to move in the narrow passage. No room to escape the heat between us. With no visual distractions, every sensation seemed magnified.

Our shallow breaths.

The warmth of her body through the cashmere sweater.

The quiet friction of our bodies pressed together in the cramped darkness.

For six months, I had played the cold, clinical specialist.

I had forced myself to look at her through a wall of professional restraint, burying the raw obsession that had been growing inside me.

But here, locked inside this darkness and stripped of every distraction, that restraint finally snapped.

“Emerence,” I growled.

My voice dropped to a rough whisper.

“Kaelen…” she breathed.

My hands moved to her hips, holding her against the cold stone wall.

Then my lips found hers.

It wasn’t a gentle kiss.

It was months of restraint finally breaking beneath the adrenaline of almost losing her.

I tasted rain on her lips and the faint bitterness of tea. She parted her lips with a soft, desperate breath, and my control weakened further.

Wren’s fingers tightened around my shoulders, her nails pressing into the damp wool of my jacket.

She didn’t pull away.

She met me with the same fierce emotion, her entire body trembling against mine.

My hand slipped beneath the edge of her sweater, resting against the warm skin of her waist.

She shivered at the contact.

My thumb traced the curve of her hip before my mouth moved along her jaw, stopping beneath her ear.

“You’re going to drive me completely out of my mind,” I whispered.

My voice was rough with a desire that felt like a physical ache.

“Then let me,” Wren whispered back.

Her hands slid down my back.

“Because in the dark, Doctor… I’m not the heiress, and you’re not my doctor.”

She pulled me closer.

“We’re just us.”

I kissed her again.

Deeper.

For several breathless moments, the storm, Julian, Beatrix, and the impending destruction of the Ashford empire disappeared.

There was only the darkness.

The heat between us.

And the undeniable truth of what we had become to each other.

Then a low, rhythmic thudding began beneath our feet.

I froze.

It wasn’t the storm.

It wasn’t the police.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

A slow, deliberate code echoed against the steel plate of the blast door from outside.

Three short taps.

Two long taps.

Wren went completely still in my arms.

Her breath caught.

Her hands tightened around my shoulders.

I recognized the pattern a second before she did.

The old Ashford house-servant signal.

A code known only to three people in the family line.

Then a faint, raspy female voice drifted through the small iron ventilation grate near the floor.

“Emerence?”

Wren’s entire body stiffened.

“Are you in there with the Thorne boy?”

Her eyes widened in the darkness.

It wasn’t Lyra.

It wasn’t Beatrix.

It was a voice that should have been buried five years ago in the Ashford family mausoleum.

My grip tightened around Wren.

Neither of us spoke.

The woman breathed shakily on the other side of the wall.

“Hurry…”

A pause.

“Before Beatrix realizes I survived the night.”

Dr. Kaelen Thorne-VaneThe red lockdown alarm sliced through the subterranean air, turning the room into shadow and crimson.Clack-thunk.The metallic lock behind us wasn’t just engaged; it was sealed. We were trapped in a concrete vault beneath Mayfair, surrounded by ozone and chilled server fluid.Above us, on the narrow iron catwalk, a silhouette stood framed against the terminal’s glow. The long barrel of an anti-material sniper rifle pointed straight at my chest.“Don’t move, Kael,” a voice rasped from the shadows. It wasn’t Julian. It wasn’t Beatrix. It was a voice I’d buried three years ago.Vane’s former chief of security, a man who had sold out my father’s memory for a seat at ALPHA-00-ZERO’s table. “One breath, and I put a three-hundred-grain round through your sternum. The girl stays alive. You don’t.”My hand twitched toward the Sig Sauer beneath my coat. Every instinct screamed at me to fire. But the angle was impossible. The distance was forty feet. Dr. Kaelen Thorne-VaneThe leather steering wheel of the Aston Martin felt cold beneath my knuckles, slick with the sweat of adrenaline that refused to leave my body. In the passenger seat, Wren’s head rested against the leather headrest, her dark eyes fixed on the empty stretch of black asphalt swallowing us whole as we tore through the countryside toward London. The engine hummed beneath us, a steady, low growl filling the silence between our breathing.I glanced at her in the faint blue glow of the dashboard. Her skin was still pale, her collarbones sharp beneath the dark wool coat I had wrapped around her shoulders. A faint purple bruise was already forming along the delicate curve of her jaw where Julian’s men had held her down. The ache had nothing to do with physical pain. It came from the quiet realization that had taken root in my mind the moment my mouth met hers in that alcove.I had crossed a line.A line I had spent three years carefully drawing in ink and blood. When I f

  • THE HEIRESS BEHIND THE MADNESS   Chapter 28: The Edge of the Shadows

Dr. Kaelen Thorne-VaneA violent surge of electricity tore through the manor’s dead wiring.Overhead, the high-voltage emergency floodlights flickered, hummed, and suddenly burst into blinding white light throughout Ashford Manor. The darkness that had protected us in the narrow passage vanished instantly.“The main power,” Wren gasped against my neck, her lungs still fighting the lingering effects of the chloral hydrate. Her small hands clutched the lapels of my coat, her fingers digging through the damp wool into my chest.“Hold onto me,” I rasped. My voice was a dark rumble against her temple. Then I heard it.Heavy footsteps echoed through the main gallery.Clack-drag.Clack-drag.Julian.He was coming back, driven by fear, rage, and whatever stimulants were still keeping his cowardly heart beating. In his right hand, the steel barrel of his revolver scraped along the high oak paneling with a sickening metallic screech.“Wren!”Julian’s voice cracked across the gallery.“I know yo

His breath was hot against my cheek, his hand firm around my waist. Even in the darkness, I could feel every muscle in his back tense like a steel spring.“Don’t answer,” Kaelen whispered. His voice was so low it was barely more than a vibration against my skin. “We don’t know who’s holding that microphone.”“It’s Aunt Clara’s cadence,” I breathed. My heart hammered against my ribs. “She disappeared during the offshore liquidation five years ago. Beatrix declared her dead.”“Beatrix declares anyone dead who becomes a liability,” Kaelen rasped. His thumb moved gently over the bare skin beneath the edge of my sweater, grounding me in the freezing darkness.“Stay focused, Emerence. WrenThe voice from the military receiver didn’t simply fade into static. It chilled the carriage house until every breath felt like inhaling glass.Your father did not commit suicide… Beatrix Ashford did not pull the trigger. I did.Ten minutes. That was all the synthesized voice had given us before the London police or whoever was pulling the strings raided this refuge. But going straight to the Mayfair vault without ammunition, without the physical evidence needed to expose the true mastermind, would be a suicide run.We didn’t need to flee the Cotswolds yet.We had to walk straight back into the jaws of the beast. The storm had escalated into a full gale by the time Kaelen navigated his unlit vehicle through the dense pine perimeter and back onto the Ashford estate. Lightning split the iron-gray sky, illuminating the sprawling silhouette of Ashford Manor like a giant, rotting creature crouched in the darkness.A jagged bolt struck the central power relay on the high estate wall wi
