Chapter 23: Dreams of Desire

Rory's POV

The first thing I felt was fire. Not the warmth of comfort but the hot sting of something that clawed through my blood like acid. My chest heaved, though my body did not move. My lips parted, yet no sound came out. I was stuck between two worlds, the waking and the dream.

And in the dream, I was not alone.

“Don’t fight it,” a low, familiar voice whispered behind me. Strong arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me back against a chest that burned hotter than any flame. “You belong with me. You’ve always belonged with me.”

I twisted and saw Darius. His golden eyes glowed, flames dancing in them as though the fire inside him had spilled out. His touch burned my skin but it didn’t hurt. It woke something deeper, darker, a hunger I didn’t dare name.

“I can’t,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “If I choose you, the world burns.”

He tilted his head, lips inches from mine, heat spreading between us. “Then let it burn. I would torch the stars if it meant keeping you.”
